Individuals and Societies Highlights

CISH

The Grade 6 students spent this week finishing up their Unit 3 summative research project. The students followed the research process using a research journal to collect and record information on their chosen ancient civilization.

This week the Grade 7 students continued working on their summative research project that will end with them creating a pamphlet/brochure that will demonstrate their understanding of how the geography and economics of a settlement shaped its development over time.

The Grade 8 students have continued working on the units’ summative research project which will end with a presentation on a settlement’s population affects its sustainability and improvements that can be made to develop further its sustainable practices.

In Grade 9 I&S class the students have been exploring the Industrial Revolution and the changes and impacts it has had on society. The students are creating a poster that they will present to the class.

The Grade 10 students in grade ten delivered their presentations about an event leading to the Nazi Party coming to power in Germany in 1933. There are some pictures below of the students delivering their presentations.

Psychology

This week the Grade 11 DP Psychology student conducted their experiments for their IA. The students have done an excellent job researching and planning their studies, recruiting participants, and conducting their experiments. The students also submitted the first drafts of the introduction and exploration of their IA reports. 


Business Management

Grade 11 students are analysing various marketing concepts and case studies. Typically working in pairs or groups to discuss and solve business problems. They use the 7 P’s of marketing to analyse and develop marketing campaigns: Product, Price, Promotion, Place, Process, People and Physical.


Language A & B Highlights

Grade 6 English Language and Literature- Mr. Turnbull

Students in grade 6 English Language and Literature class continued their public speaking unit.They focused on developing the ATL skill: inform yourself to inform others. They did this byresearching an area of inequality that interests them and one that they may use for theirupcoming summative task.


Grade 7 & 8 English Language and Literature - Miss Rees

This week in grade 7 language and literature class, students focused on creating the plot fortheir stop motion animation films. They started by brainstorming ideas and then developed theirplots, paying attention to the key elements of a narrative such as character development,setting, and conflict.

In grade 8 language and literature class this week, students were introduced to their finalsummative task: creating puppet shows focused on character and plot for the Primary YearsProgramme (PYP).


Grade 9 English Language and Literature- Miss Rees. and Mr. Turvey

As part of our creative writing unit, the Grade 9 Language and Literature students worked oncreating and completing a storyboard summative. They demonstrated great creativity andimagination in developing their stories.


Grade 10 English Language and Literature- Mr. Miller

The grade 10 English Language and literature class completed the third week of their unit"Maus: Perspectives, Purpose and Audience Imperatives on Inequality" and IDU with Individualsand Societies. The students were introduced to the unit's summative task, a mock DP LanguageA internal assessment.


Grade 11 & 12 English A: Language and Literature- Mr. Turnbull

To start the week, the grade 11 class wrote a practice Paper #1 exam. This is the first timestudents have written Paper #1 under exam conditions. They submitted their work and receivedfeedback from the teacher. The 12th graders continued to write their IB exams. They have now completed the course.

Grade 6/7 German Language and Literature- Mr. Adler

This week, Grade 6/7 continued with the unit about Animation. Students took a look at differenttechniques and equipment that can be used for creating animation including a DisneyImagicademy Animation Studio that we acquired during this week's Book Fair.


Grade 8 German Language and Literature- Mr.Meinberg

This week, students in our MYP German class continued to practice identifying meters in avariety of poems and explored how different meters influence the atmosphere of the poem. 


Grade 9 & 11 German Language and Literature- Mr. Adler

This week, students in Grade 9 continued their final unit called "Creative Writing". In this unit,students continued to learn the different text types, explore different creative authors, learncreativity styles, structures and vocabulary to be able to create creative texts.

This week, students in Grade 11 continued to work on several mock-up Paper 2's in preparationof their exams later. The mock-up questions for the practice are available for the students onManagebac.

Grade 10 Korean Language and Literature- Ms. Kim

Our MYP Year 5 Korean Language and Literature class had ongoing discussions based onreading 'Who Ate Up All the Sing-a' by Park Wansuh, which is related to the history of theKorean War. The students discussed the meaning of war for humans, including the gap betweenideology and reality.


Grade 11 & 12 Korean A: Language and Literature - Ms. Kim

Our DP Year 1 Korean Language and Literature class conducted an in-depth analysis of thedocumentary film 'The Main Battle Ground: For Comfort Women' by Miki Dezaki, which focuseson the rhetorical battle over the women who were sexually serviced by Japanese soldiers beforeand during World War II.

Our DP year 2 Korean Language and Literature students continued taking their DP exams.They will finish by next week. More power to you!

Grade 6 English Language Acquisition - Mr. Kirilenko and Mr. Steinberg

This week Mr. Kirilenko’s Grade 6’s participated in a collective play of Mafia which consisted of practicing their listening and speaking skills. Students also worked in pairs researching definitions of new vocabulary and sharing it with the rest of the class.

Mr. Steinberg’s grade 6’s began by completing a class activity that allowed them to utilize their analytical, critical thinking, and speaking skills. Thereafter, students each presented one human impact on the earth. 


Grade 7 English Language Acquisition - Mr. Du Plooy and Mr. Steinberg

Mr. Steinberg’s grade 7s began the week by presenting the emoji they have been creating. During this presentation, they needed to explore how the emoji is connected to their culture, and why others would like to use it.


Grade 8 English Language Acquisition – Mr. Steinberg and Ms. Bartoszak

Mr. Steinberg’s grade 8s began the week by giving a presentation on a social media platform or technology, and how it has affected communication. This activity allowed learners to practice and utilize their research, critical thinking, writing and speaking skills.

Ms Bartoszak’s students continued developing their reading skills, focusing on strategies they could use whilst exploring poetry. Students this time focus on the poem The Rez, based on a Native American Indian. 


Grade 9 English Language Acquisition – Mr. Steinberg and Mr. Dooley

Mr.Steinberg’s grade 9s began the week by reviewing and refining their mythological stories; allowing the learners to practice their reflective and writing skills. Thereafter, the learners did a listening comprehension assessment based on a mythological story.

Mr. Dooley’s Grade 9’s had a busy week. Students stared the week by finishing their listening summative task based on the Myth of Pygmalion. Then they worked on creating presentations differentiating between Myths, Legends and Fictional stories.

Grade 10 English Language Acquisition - Mr. Schwab and Mr. Dooley

Mr. Schwab’s Grade 10 students had a busy week, focusing on various language and literature skills. They used their recently made text types chart to determine which text type was appropriate to write, considering the intended audience, purpose, and context of the writing. 

Mr. Dooley’s Grade 10’s continued our work on our unit ‘Identities’. Students looked at some writing prompts and used our text type charts to help us determine the most appropriate text type to produce in different circumstances.


Grade 11 English B Language Acquisition - Mr. Kiefer and Ms. Bartoszak 

Mr. Kiefer’s Grade 11 English B HL students continued reviewing Of Mice and Men and developing their speaking skills in preparation for their upcoming end of year oral assessment. Students worked in groups to identify and discuss the themes of the novel.

Ms Bartoszak’s Grade 11 students focused on reviews for their Paper 1. Students explored features of review writing as well as scenarios. They came up with various scenarios especially focused on the there Sharing the Planet. 


Mathematics Highlights

Grade 6 students studied probability. Probability is practical math that is interesting and useful at the same time. This week, we explored some fundamentals concepts of probability such a likelihood, outcomes, sample spaces.

The grade 7's started learning about experimental probability. We discussed the differences between theoretical and experimental probability and how to conduct experiments to estimate probabilities. 

Grade 8 math focused on test preparation of trigonometry. These learning highlights emphasize the importance of understanding trigonometric ratios, their application in similar and congruent triangles, problem-solving strategies, and real-world connections. 

Mathematics 9 students spent all week preparing for "Carnival Day," an event to explore theoretical and experimental probability through various probability-based games. They learned the difference between theoretical and experimental probability.

Mathematics 10 students spent weeks developing their capstone project, a comprehensive examination reviewing all units covered throughout the year.

Math AI DP1 students use Voronoi diagrams to develop practical problem-solving skills and a deeper appreciation for the power of mathematics to address real-world challenges.

Math AA DP1 students had been studying the Monty Hall problem and binomial distribution functions, applying their knowledge to solve complex problems. They worked collaboratively, seeking feedback and support to deepen their understanding.

Math DP2 students were diligently preparing for their upcoming exams. They had been studying a range of topics, including calculus, algebra, geometry, and statistics, in order to master the required content.
