LEH Foshan Weekly Moments
Letter from the Headteacher
I cannot believe another week is nearly over. It was a pleasure to welcome our Year 7 parents to the first of our lunch dates with Dr Kirk, Mr Banks and tutors, Ms Wang and Ms Pritchard. This was the first of many opportunities for parents to get to know senior management, along with our amazing tutors who are always parents first point of contact.
This week we are asking parents to get involved in our Parent Committee, please read the information and either nominate a parent who you think could fulfil the role or nominate yourself. Creating a community is an essential part of a successful school and I vey much hope that you, our parents, agree.
Additionally, you will read about the many sporting opportunities we will be providing for students through our ECA programme. We encourage all students to enjoy some form exercise as this creates good habits that will enable all our students to go on to have a healthy work /life balance in adulthood.
Many of our staff are fine sports persons, many have played competitively, including myself for many years. It is great to see that our staff act as role models to our students. The 8c of commitment is promoted through team sport and House events. Please keep an eye out in the calendar for events that you can support.
The winter ski trip will give many of our students the chance to try a new sport, travel to a new country and enjoy getting to know each other outside of the school environment, if you would like more details about this trip, it is not too late to ask.
Have a good weekend.
Best Regards
Jane Arden
LEH Foshan is proud to introduce our newest member of the Physical Education department, Ms Sophie Smith. Ms Smith will work within Prep school and be involved with secondary PE and PSHE lessons.
Head of Prep Physical Education
Hello parents,
My name is Sophie, and I am the new Head of Prep Physical Education at LEH Foshan. I am excited to join this team and look forward to sharing my passion for physical education with the students here.
I graduated from Edge Hill University with a BA (Hons) in Physical Education and School Sports and a Post Graduate Certificate in Education in Physical Education. I have been teaching for over five years and am passionate about helping students learn and grow. Since starting my career, I have worked in schools in the UK before moving to Moscow, where I worked for three years.
The basis of my teaching philosophy is to inspire and support students to become intellectual, independent individuals through gaining and maintaining good relationships with students. I hold the exact principles in my leadership and teaching to ensure all of those who I lead are engaged, motivated and support my passion for education. As a result of developing sporting opportunities, students can benefit through various social and cultural activities to mentor and set targets. This allows students to discover their own potential and talent to build upon self-resilience and self-confidence, aspiring them to become well-rounded citizens for the rest of their lives.
In my free time, I enjoy tennis, swimming, travelling to new places and spending time with my family.
I am excited to get to know you and your child this year. Please do not hesitate to contact me with any questions or concerns.
Following a short but successful competitive year for our Prep swimming team, LEH is proud to announce that training will resume very soon, enabling our amazing swimmers to continue to grow and develop. Students with competence in three out of four strokes will be invited to join the team if this invite is taken, students in Prep will be expected to:
Further information will be released shortly, including training days and times.
We hope to increase the number of competitions our students participate in this year, with the first potential competition taking place by the end of November.
We can proudly announce that the first group of IPQ pupils in the school’s history presented their vivas to the school community. The audience was comprised of supportive staff, Sixth Form students and committed parents alike. All were equal in their praise. Our students conveyed a sense of poise, well beyond their years. This bodes well for them in the future as presenting information will be expected at university and throughout their careers. Not only is it a confidence booster, but students who take the IPQ will also be making themselves ready for the IELTS speaking examination.
The IPQ has given our pupils a far greater understanding of research methodology and academic writing. Pupils appreciate the need to cross-reference materials to avoid including false information. They have held themselves to the highest standard possible, and I am sure they will endeavour to do this for the rest of their working lives. At university, out LEHF students will thrive with their confidence, flair and ability to conduct an array of research strategies (qualitative, quantitative and longitudinal to name some). The IPQ, at LEHF, has been a raging success, and the students are mastering the skills required to succeed in life.
We are proud of their progress and look forward to repeating the process next year.
The English department has welcomed new staff this year. Ms Nicole Homer will be teaching English language and literature throughout the year groups, alongside new Head of English, Ms Mary Stevens. The new Head of Learning Support, Mrs Jenny Nelson, will also be teaching English to Key Stage 3 and 4. Ms Abi Forrest will have responsibility for teaching English to our new PALS intake, and will focus on supporting their transition towards A levels during this year.
Head of English &
Deputy Head of Sixth Form
ELA Teacher & House Parent
These new teachers join returning staff member David Richards, who will continue preparing students for second language tests such as IELTS. Recent results for these tests have been impressive. We would like to congratulate Sammy Tan and Cheuk Yiu for achieving high scores in the IELTS examination. In the last academic year, both students attended IELTS lessons at school and this preparation helped them to achieve their desired results. Most Western universities require an IELTS score of 6.5 or above, with at least 6.0 in each individual component. Both students met this requirement. This is a fantastic achievement, and we hope it inspires other students.
Our KS3 year groups are well underway with their creations in literature. The year 7s are studying Detective Stories and will write their own mystery tale – villains included! – towards the end of the term. Year 8 are studying Ghost Stories and, like the year 7s, will create their own masterpiece of suspense. Year 9 are studying poetry and key reading and writing skills.
In KS4, the Year 10 and 11 pupils are reading their set literature texts alongside preparation for the language exam. Both require coursework, and teachers are talking to pupils one-to-one about their interests and ideas. Our A level literature student has embarked on her study of the iconic Tennessee Williams play, A Cat on a Hot Tin Roof, alongside 30 Songs of Ourselves poems, each by a different poet.
Outside of these classroom topics, students will experience a Reading Journey in the library, led by our new librarian Surah Li. Reading regularly during class time, they will complete passports and activities around the books they choose individually. The final target is 55 books! We can’t wait to see what they discover on their travels. Classes will also dedicate some time to Drama, with all KS3 pupils taking a London Academy of Music and Dramatic Arts certificate later in the year. This is designed to help improve their speaking, body awareness, confidence and acting skills.
Following a short but successful competitive year for our secondary swimming team, LEH is proud to announce that training will resume very soon, enabling our amazing swimmers to continue to grow and develop. Training will continue once students in Years 7 – 11 have been assessed during their swimming lessons. Students with competence in three out of four strokes will be invited to join the team; if this invite is accepted, students in secondary will be expected to:
Train twice a week during the ECA programme,
Attend morning training sessions twice a week (06:00-07:00), and,
Participate in Saturday morning training sessions (09:00-11:00).
Further information will be released shortly, including training days and times.
We hope to increase the number of competitions our students participate in this year, with the first potential competition taking place by the end of November.
Following the national holiday and mid-autumn festival, LEH is delighted to announce the introduction of a touch rugby ECA, led by Guangzhou Hualong Rugby Club.
Touch Rugby is a sport derived from rugby league in which players do not tackle each other but instead touch their opponents. This minimizes the body contact and allows both genders to play together. It used to be played as training activities for rugby league and rugby union but now exists as an individual sport as it is gaining more popularity among people of all ages.
Guangzhou Hualong Rugby Club is a rugby sports club founded in 2003. Since then, they have promoted rugby/touch rugby and its culture throughout China, becoming the most influential touch rugby club in China.
So far, they have successfully held 50 rugby tournaments and trained 5000+ people to play touch. Guangzhou Hualong Rugby club’s team has participated in 10+ international competitions.
Hualong has collaborated with several international schools on touch rugby programmes, including AISG, BISG, and BASIS. They believe that through touch rugby, schools can embrace a global sports culture, and build their own sports culture atmosphere.
School will introduce the Touch Rugby ECAs on Thursday during ECA 1 for KS3 and ECA 2 for KS4/5 following the National Holiday. This programme will offer our students at LEH the chance to be part of touch teams, compete in touch tournaments and take part in sports exchange activities. This programme will run throughout the year, allowing students to learn a new sport and participate in multiple competitions.
With the start of the new academic year comes new sporting opportunities for students in secondary school. LEH is working with a local basketball coaching company to provide our students with high-quality basketball training.
A team try-out is arranged for Saturday, 23 September, for KS3 and KS4/5 students interested in joining the School Basketball Team. During these try-outs, the coaches will select fifteen players from KS3 and fifteen players from KS4/5, based on their performance and ability to work as part of a team.
After the National Holiday, the selected players in KS3 will participate in a 2-hour professional training on every Tuesday during ECA time and KS4/5 will receive the training on every Monday. Further information will be released shortly.
