CISH Chess

CISH Chess is an exciting new ASA offered to students this year at CISH. Between twenty and thirty eager students battle it out over the 64 squares every Tuesday afternoon. As well as enjoying the game with their friends and enjoying the competition, students also hone a host of skills useful to their academic development. 

Academic Benefits

Recent studies have confirmed what educators have known for many years: that chess improves problem solving ability, geometric reasoning, concentration, logical thinking, visualization, pattern recognition and creativity. Students have to plan, strategize, memorize. Studies have also shown that playing chess even improves reading skills! 

Self-Management and Social Skills

Chess is a game is risk and reward. Sometimes the risk doesn’t work out - students have to learn to accept defeat and handle the result of a game, win or lose, with grace and humility. Students also watch each other’s games and give advice or suggestions on best play, helping one another to evolve as chess players and creative thinkers. 

Opportunities

One of the great aspects of CISH Chess is that many of the students have taken the initiative and designed posters and a logo. They take attendance, set up the tables and boards etc. For the DP students, this gives them an opportunity to score CAS points. For the younger students, it is a chance to show they can be responsible and trustworthy.
