The United Nations World Science Day
for Peace and Development
is an important day in the science calendar.
On November 10th,
People worldwide reflect upon the impact
science has had on society
and how it has made our lives better.
Science Day
was also celebrated at Harrow Hengqin
with a wealth of activities,
where students unlocked scientific knowledge
from different perspectives through
novel and interesting experiments
and unique talks.
This led to a greater appreciation of the
importance and relevance
of science in learning and life.
Take a look back at an exciting Science Day!
Lower School
Various Science Experiments
Lower School celebrated with a wide range of different and exciting experiments on the day. Each class did their own experiment or scientific demonstration. Grade 1 did a fun demonstration involving baking soda (alkali) reacting with vinegar (acid) mixed with food dye. The result was a colourful (and safe) explosion that dazzled the Grade 1 children!
Grade 2 did a similar demonstration but with lemon juice (acid) reacting with baking soda (alkali) and food colouring to make some fizzy lemon volcanoes.
In Grade 3 the children did an investigation to see how much salt could be added to water to dissolve into a solution before it became saturated and no more salt could dissolve.
In Grade 4, children were testing different foods to see if they contained starch or protein by adding iodine (for starch testing) and a mixture of copper sulphate and sodium hydroxide (for protein).
In Grade 5, children have been learning about the surface of the Earth and this experiment combines classroom learning. They first made volcanoes using a salt, flour, oil and water mix. They then recreated a volcanic eruption using the reaction of vinegar, baking soda and food dye. I have some pictures of this for you here.
Upper School
Diverse Science Learning
In Upper School, students were exposed to science in many forms in the lead up to the day. Students witnessed fire of many colours in their chemistry classes, zoomed in on microscopic structures in biology, and much more.
Upper School were privileged to have ophthalmology specialists visit us and make a presentation. Ophthalmology is an important field of study which has undergone a lot of development in modern times. Recognising the role of science in the development can help students to understand the importance and techniques of eyecare.
During the lecture, Harrow students actively interacted with the ophthalmologists and answered their questions. At the end, the students not only learnt about ophthalmology from ancient to modern times, but also realised that "eye care is as important as brushing your teeth every day".
On Science Day, we also announced the winner of our 2nd Biological Illustration Competition. This competition is a great way for students to combine their artistic skills with scientific understanding. There were many high-quality entries from across Upper and Lower Schools. The winning entries showed innovation, a depth of knowledge, and were amazing visual pieces.

Doris chose to study Glass Frogs – one of nature’s curiosities and an excellent choice for this task. She incorporated information about the frog’s life cycle, habitat, closely related species, as well as an incredible painting of the frog’s see-through body. Knowledge of the life cycle and classification of species is integral to IGCSE Biology and we are excited to see what she will produce in the future.
Chenming produced an amazing piece which demonstrated knowledge of bone structure and the interrelation of different species. He compared the structure of human and giraffe necks, an excellent contrast. His work was clear and creative, incorporating elements of 3D. Truly a great visual piece.
Mr. Jordan Cochrance
Head of Science
Recognising that science is an endeavour of the entire human race helps students to understand how science is carried out, and the potential it has to serve us in the future. With the influx of technologies and rapid development of society, the importance of being able to engage with science cannot be understated in modern times. Our students were enthusiastic about the Science Day activities, which helped them consolidate their theoretical knowledge, develop their analytical and problem-solving skills, as well as their laboratory skills. It is worth mentioning that the Biological Illustration Competition was particularly popular among students, with entries covering scientific concepts such as bone structure, digestive system, life cycle, special structures, etc., which help in the understanding of science.
The above science activities can stimulate
students' interest in learning,
exercise their observation skills and
consolidate their theoretical knowledge in science.
The Science Day was successfully concluded
with the active participation of the students.
We look forward to the next to be even more exciting!
