Have you ever imagined using freezing techniques to provide warmth and nourishment to more hungry people? Have you ever tried drinking filtered water to alleviate thirst? TWIS students are connecting their knowledge with global issues through practical application and innovation of scientific knowledge, striving to solve the various challenges humanity.

Since last semester, TWIS students have been participating in artemisinin extraction experiments under the guidance of Guangzhou Science Center and have successfully completed them. Their passion for science has been growing, and scientific experiments have filled every laboratory in the school. Now, the students are no longer satisfied with just completing scientific experiments. They are focusing on global human and environmental issues, hoping to use their knowledge to bring well-being to the earth, oceans, and all of humanity.

Under normal circumstances, microbial growth, development, and reproduction activities can cause food to spoil at room temperature, while low-temperature environments can lead to a decrease in food quality. MYP1 students Larry and Oscar presented a thought-provoking project on how freezing food can contribute to solving global food shortages. Their presentation included demonstrations of various freezing techniques and an in-depth exploration of their impact on food preservation and waste reduction. This project not only provided practical solutions but also encouraged students to think critically about sustainable practices in food consumption and storage.

26% of the global population lacks access to safe drinking water, and 10% of the population lives in countries with extremely scarce water resources. In order to support the United Nations’ goal of providing clean drinking water to everyone by 2030, MYP2 students Jason and Angela delved into the world of water purification. They explored different methods of filtering water, emphasizing their potential to address global water crises. Their hands-on demonstrations illustrated how simple, cost-effective filtration techniques could be employed in areas lacking access to clean water. This project was particularly impactful, highlighting how science can be a powerful tool in tackling some of the world's most pressing issues.

Recognizing that some scientific technology may be currently too complex for PYP, teachers and seconary students transformed various complicated scientific theories into interesting small experiments, from DNA extraction to chemical material production, from architecture to aerodynamics. These small experiments are easy to perform and full of fun, planting the seed of science in the hearts of PYP students.

Our Science Day was more than just a series of experiments and presentations; it was a celebration of the power of science and its potential to drive change for a better world as embedded in our IB curriculum. The focus on global issues such as food shortages and water crises provided our students with a broader perspective on how science intersects with real-world challenges. We look forward to continuing this tradition in the years to come, fostering a love for science and a commitment to using it for the betterment of our world.
