When I was thinking of the theme for my first Bilingual Speech Competition here at Harrow Hengqin, I immediately thought of the idea of identity. Starting a new school, in a new country, always makes me think about my own identity and a sense of acceptance for who I am – how I speak, where I come from, what makes me me. Coming to Harrow Hengqin as a bilingual school in China posed another challenge to be accepted in a new country with a language that I cannot (yet) speak. This Bilingual Speech Competition has offered our wonderful competitors the opportunity to share the beauty of how they can use both languages to express their own identities – and help me to understand a little more about them as individuals.

It's an honour to enjoy such a wonderful bilingual speech! The topic of our speech is "Identity". What does it mean? It means to know yourself. On the Greek temple of Apollo there is a line that says "Know thyself". From the beginning of time this has been the way of human progress. Who are you? What do you like? What are you good at? What are your unique life experiences? In fact, 'being yourself' is something that takes courage. Will you recognise your own value when the outside world gives you negative comments? Will you stand up for yourself when others question you? I hope everyone can be brave enough to be themselves and become the person they most want to be!
The students' confident and wonderful expressions
left a deep impression
on our teachers and parents.
We are looking forward to the next
Bilingual Speech Competition
to bring more excitement!
