In Lower School of Harrow Hengqin,
how do children learn English?
In order to demystify the learning journey
we recently invited parents to come to the school
and shared their children’s progress of English!
We advocate that parents actively participate
in their children’s learning process,
understand our teaching and learning methods,
and praise the progress
and achievements of the children.
Let’s take a look at the wonderful
English learning journey of each grade!
Grade 1 were excited to share their learning with their parents. They have been reading and exploring the classic tale of 'The Gingerbread Man'. The students had the opportunity to retell the story in their own words and share their work with their parents. To celebrate their creativity and understanding of the story, homeroom teachers planned a series of engaging activities for children to complete with their parents.
The Grade 2 English Journey Experience allowed students to share their recent English development through a presentation of their storytelling of ‘The Three Billy Goats Gruff’. There were opportunities to take part in a range of student-led vocabulary development activities. In the class, parents can see that the students have made tremendous progress!
The Grade 3 students were excited to welcome parents to learn more about their progress in story writing. Students explained the Talk for Writing journey they have experienced over the past few weeks. They then shared their stories with their respective parents. Finally, they discussed how best to illustrate and present their final drafts.
This approach is designed to develop students' language acquisition and reading for pleasure by providing them with a structured framework for writing. The Talk for Writing strategy consists of three main parts: imitation, innovation, and invention. In Grade 3, students apply the skills and knowledge they have gained to write their own original text. Teachers encourage students to take creative risks and develop their own ideas and style.
The data show that students in schools that conduct TfW training make significantly higher than average progress in reading.
The Grade 4 English Journey Experience was a multimedia presentation of students’ recent learning about the sinking of the Titanic in 1912. They have been learning about what happened and learning about how to present important news in the form of written newspaper reports and television news stories. Parents came to watch videos of the children reporting the news of the Titanic as if they were presenting live on a real-life TV news channel! There was also a fun photo activity for parents to take part in with students at the end.
The Grade 5 English Journey Experience involved our students delivering a lesson to our parents based on our current theme of fairy tales. We have been exploring how to create alternative endings using creative and descriptive narratives, and our students worked with our parents to create new versions of a famous fairy tale. This was an exciting opportunity for our students to be teachers for a lesson in our classroom. Our students used a variety of skills including leadership, collaboration, planning, information technology and design, as well as their English skills, to prepare this lesson for parents!
What do parents think after attending this rich and interesting English Journey Experience in Lower School?
This was a very good demonstration of teaching and learning! I think it was great that the homeroom teacher had prepared a rich session to present with the children and also invited the parents to join in so we can feel involved.
My child rarely speaks English at home, but here I can see my child communicating confidently with the tutor in English, and I can visually see how my child is learning, and I can clearly feel that my child's English is improving.
I saw my child become a news presenter in class. I felt relieved and happy to see her express her English confidently and fluently.
As a parent, I felt that if I learned the way the students were doing, I could pick it up quickly and use it right away. It proved that the teacher was teaching in the right way. I was happy to see my child at Harrow Hengqin learning happily and making progress.
The purpose of this event is to integrate parents
into their children's learning and
to further strengthen home-school cooperation
so that their children's progress in English can be seen!
Seeing is believing.
We also welcome prospective
parents to enter the campus,
enter the daily teaching scene,
and experience and understand
the charm of Harrow Hengqin.
On January 13, 2024 (Saturday),
Harrow Hengqin’s first G1、G7 Experience Day
for new students is now open for registration.
Places are limited, so please make an appointment!
