LEH International School Foshan celebrates the achievements of our Sixth Form student, Winnie, who has recently received a conditional offer from the prestigious Imperial College London.
Winnie joined us in Year 11 as a founding student in September 2021 and swiftly excelled in all her IGCSE subjects, completing the programme in just one year. Moving on to Sixth Form, she faced the more demanding A Level curriculum with the same determination and achieved remarkable success. Her journey at LEH Foshan showcases not only her unwavering academic dedication but also the transformative education we provide, preparing students for excellence.
Our Head of Sixth Form and Head of Mathematics, Mrs Kirk commented:
I have enjoyed Winnie’s love of mathematics and her ability to dissect a problem and work through it methodically with few if any errors. As the maths has matured so has Winnie. She has developed her personality and she is becoming a young person with her own ideas and opinions. Whilst Winnie has always been a good student she has grown into a more reflective learner, conscious of the world around her and the consequences of her and other people’s actions. I have no doubt that she will make a difference in whichever field she chooses to study and that she will continue to grow into a well-rounded, able, and caring member of the community.
In this article, we invite Winnie to share how her experiences at LEH Foshan have helped her grow and prepare for an exciting future at one of the world’s top universities.
Winnie, as one of the pioneering students who joined LEH Foshan in September 2021, can you share how your experiences at the school shaped your academic and personal growth?
When I joined LEH Foshan, the number of students and teachers was smaller than it is today. Despite this, the teaching and learning experiences were quite intensive and focused. Teachers were very patient, responsible, and good at teaching, from which I benefited greatly. For example, my teacher has been helping me practise English, which has significantly improved my English within a few years. In terms of subjects, the teacher tried to break down knowledge into simpler parts as much as possible. This approach made it easier for me to understand and allowed me, as a second language learner, to learn quickly.
Securing an offer from Imperial College London is a remarkable achievement. Can you share the guidance and support from the school that contributed to this success?
Firstly, at the start of Year 13, our teachers guided us in preparing our Personal Statement and award list. This allows me to have a better understanding of myself and a clearer goal in choosing universities. Then, the teachers helped me improve my Personal Statements, discussed with me the reasons for choosing this major and my enthusiasm for it, and helped me solve the problems in filling out the UCAS application. Later, I received an interview invitation from Imperial College, and I was actually very excited and nervous. My teacher also invited a teacher from LEH London to familiarise me with the interview process and questions. I also practiced the interview with my science teacher, which alleviated my fears and nerves about the interview. I believe these factors were crucial in securing my offer.
The A Level curriculum is known for its rigour and depth. What challenges did you face while studying for your A Levels at LEH Foshan, and how did you overcome them?
A level is indeed a very challenging curriculum, and I often encounter some very difficult challenges. For example, grasping the theoretical aspects of Science in English can be difficult and the scope of the A Level exams is very broad and deep. As a result, if one concept is not fully understood, it can make understanding related topics challenging. When I encounter such a situation, I immediately search for information online, including review materials on websites such as Save My Exam. If there are still any areas that I do not understand, I will discuss these issues and their related topics with the teacher during lessons.
In what ways have the teachers at LEH Foshan supported and guided you throughout your A Level studies?
Teachers at LEH Foshan are very responsible. They not only help us with our studies, but also guide us to lead a healthy and balanced lifestyle, both physically and mentally. During my studies, I often experience significant pressure due to the heavy workload, which can sometimes lead to low moods and affect my performance in classes. When the teachers notice this, they take the time to discuss my issues with me and help alleviate my anxiety. I think their support is the reason why I have been able to persevere in my learning journey.
Boarding at LEH Foshan offers a unique living and learning experience. Could you tell us about your boarding experience and how it has influenced your daily routine, friendships, and overall school life?
I have been living in the boarding house since Year 11. Initially, I was in a four-person room, where I met one of my current close friends. Later, I moved into a double room and began spending most weekends there, usually with friends. Boarding life at the weekends is far from boring. Not only can we manage our own study schedules, but we also have access to a range of activities. We can exercise in the gym, play the piano in the music room, and enjoy billiards and games in the entertainment area. Every week, the boarding department organises off-campus activities, varying from shopping trips to leisure walks in the park, making our time both enjoyable and fulfilling.
Once again, we extend our heartfelt congratulations to Winnie on her outstanding achievement. LEH Foshan is immensely proud of her and her accomplishments. Winnie's success is a shining example of our high-calibre, British education. Our goal is to continually nurture and empower our students, equipping them with the tools they need to succeed in their academic and future endeavours.
Stay tuned for more inspiring success stories from our students, as we celebrate their achievements and the vibrant, supportive community that is LEH Foshan.
