The grade 6 students applied their understanding of what they had learned about poverty and development to analyzing a case study on poverty in the USA. They developed their skills of extracting information from visual and written sources and using information to support their ideas. The students also practiced identifying different perspectives and interpreting data. Lastly, the students were introduced to a summative individual project in which they will research the development of a specific country.

The grade 7 students completed their summative research project pamphlets. After passing in their work the students reflected on the process, looking at the areas they did well, what they learned, and how they can improve for next time. They then looked at each other's pamphlets and peer-evaluated them for their understanding of the course concepts. The students worked on their critical thinking and communication skills.

The grade 8 students have begun a summative research project where they will look at a settlement, its population patterns, and sustainable practices.  The students researched a city, created a research question, and began working on their source analysis and evaluation, OPVL, for sources they will use for their project. The students developed their research, communication, and critical thinking skills.

I&S

The grade 9 students have completed their Captains Log summative research project. The students submitted their Captains Log and then evaluated their work on the research process and product with the goal of recognizing where and how they can improve for next time. The students ended the week with an introduction to their final unit on the Industrial Revolution. The students completed a gallery walk where they analyzed different sources to gain an understanding of life and challenges during this time period. The students worked on their critical thinking and communication skills.

This week grade 10 students shared their posters that were the result of their research on atrocities committed during the Holocaust. Students circulated the classroom and took down notes on the key points their peers raised about specific WW2 atrocities and the context and significance of these events. Students also covered the topics of the SS and Concentration camps during WW2. Students practiced collaboration skills and accessing a topic for significance.

Psychology

The grade 11 Psychology students continued working on their Internal Assessment (IA) this week. Having already conducted background research and created the materials they need to carry out their study, each group conducted a pilot study in class and received feedback from their classmates. The students also began writing the introduction and exploration divs of their research report individually.

Business Management

Grade 11: Continuing marketing students have been researching and taking quizzes about the various forms and types of market Research, surveys and docs groups primary and secondary research.

Design Highlights

CISH

Despite a shorter week, the Grade 6 Design class made significant progress in our 3D Printing unit. The students continued to familiarize themselves with the necessary software tools, gaining practical skills that will be essential for their upcoming projects. In addition to mastering the software, the class has officially begun work on Criterion A of the project by developing their problem statements. This initial step has prompted students to think critically about the challenges they wish to address through their 3D printing designs, laying a strong foundation for the creative and planning phases ahead. As we move forward, the students will continue to refine their problem statements and begin brainstorming viable solutions that they can realistically implement using their newfound skills in 3D printing technology.

During this week, Grade 7 MYP Design students continued their immersive journey into the unit focusing on sustainable solutions aligned with the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (UNSDGs). Throughout the week, students were actively engaged in hands-on exploration, utilizing 3D design software and printing technology to advance their understanding of sustainable design principles. They were deeply involved in conceptualizing, designing, and developing product ideas aimed at addressing specific UNSDGs, demonstrating their creativity and problem-solving skills. By following the design cycle, students seamlessly integrated their learnings from previous units, reinforcing connections between theoretical knowledge and practical applications.

As the week drew to a close, Grade 8 classes concluded their educational toy unit, dedicating time to the finalization and refinement of their projects.  Reflecting on their design journey, students actively evaluated their work, focusing on the criteria C div of their design portfolio. It was a moment of celebration as the class showcased their impressively crafted and impactful educational toys, showcasing their innovation and dedication throughout the entirety of the unit. This successful culmination not only demonstrated the students' creativity but also underscored their commitment to excellence in design and education.

At the close of the week, Grade 9 students wrapped up the creation phase, culminating in the submission of their completed products along with the Criteria C portion of their portfolios. Each group presented unique and functional products, demonstrating a remarkable level of success and achievement. The students' investment of time and energy into their projects was evident in the high quality of their submissions, showcasing their dedication and commitment to excellence. As a result, the completed versions stand as a testament to their hard work and innovative spirit, leaving them with a sense of pride and accomplishment in their accomplishments.

The school admin and the IT department are redesigning the school’s website. After a couple drafts, I was given an opportunity to challenge the grade 10 Design classes to suggest improvements. Students are doing this as part of the Developing ideas criterion. The challenge is to suggest refinements but to also justify the changes.

For next week, Gantt charts and the logical plan.

It is becoming busier for the DP1 students in Computer science. This week, they started to look at computer organization with respect to binary representation. Students were assigned a task to update progress on their Internal Assessments (IAs). In line with this, they examined code that allows them to write data records to a permanent file. This will surely help them to progress with their IAs. At the end of the week, HL students wrote an assessment on Topic 5 – Abstract data structures while NB students took a test on some programming techniques.

Grade 12: The DP2s are writing exams this week. In fact, on Thursday they wrote their HL and SL paper 1 exam. NB students are doing final revisions for their exam on May 13th. Besides review, students are writing tests that cover the material that they are responsible for. These are like small one period mock assessments to set the tone for the exam.

Mathematics Highlights

CISH

In Grade 6, students reviewed "The Geometry of Solids" unit, gearing up for the upcoming test. They mastered concepts like Length, Perimeter, Area, Volume, Capacity, and Solids, along with formulae for various shapes. They mastered their skills in drawing and constructing solids, exploring real-life applications through problem-solving activities.

In Grade 7 this week, have been finalizing their projects which are due for submission this evening. The project combines everything we have learned about thus far in the unit as well as practicing research and investigating skills. We have also reviewed content we learned previously, such as cumulative frequencies and calculating measures of central tendency and spread.

Grade 8 students explored the triangle similarity. They learned to identify and prove similarity based on corresponding angles and sides, craft similarity statements, and leverage similarity to solve for unknown angles, lengths, and perimeters. It was a week filled with geometric discoveries and problem-solving prowess!

Additionally, students showcased their skills in the Caribou Contest on Thursday, May 2nd.

In mathematics 10, students are investigating applications of logarithmic and exponential functions. Their project next week will involve Newton’s Law of Cooling.

In Grade 11, HL students are studying complex numbers. The students have been practicing arithmetic with complex numbers and using Argand diagrams. We have learned how to convert numbers in arithmetic form into polar form and into exponential form using Euler’s formula. The SL students have spent much of the week reviewing arithmetic and geometric sequences and series.

The Grade 12 IB students are sitting their exams now. The NB students are studying their Calculus 120 course, we practiced implicit differentiation this week and learned how to find equations of tangents to a curve with a given equation.
