Pre-K

Polly Coronel and Kirsten Hernandez

This week, we focused on shapes!  Using tissue roll cardboard tubes and colorful paint, our students had a blast making circles on the wall at the playground. It was fun and messy, but everyone enjoyed seeing the different colors come together. They were excited to see a lot of circles and were proud to show each one they found. They pointed out circle shapes on doors, windows, and walls. We also tried scribbling circles using our tiny fingers. These were fun activities and the children enjoyed discovering and learning about circles together.

We also started learning about squares. After introducing the concept of squares, we combined it with a life skills lesson. Students practiced control and concentration by carefully sweeping paper trash into a square marked on the floor. This hands-on approach not only reinforced their understanding of geometric shapes but also helped them develop fine motor skills and attention to detail. It also made learning interactive and practical, fostering both academic and personal growth in our students.

K1

Erin Wang and Sati Tadevosyan

This week in our inquiry sessions, we focused on living things, specifically plant growth, and began introducing animal growth. Our students planted sunflower seeds, created a mini garden, and learned about the life cycle of silkworms while observing the growth of our new class pet silkworms! We also played an outdoor sorting game to differentiate between living and non-living things. In symbolic learning, we introduced the letter D and read the stories "5 Little Ducks" and "The Ugly Duckling." We also played an imaginary game “Seeing a doctor”. In Math, we reviewed numbers 1-10 and the concept of ten frames. During our outdoor activities, we counted natural elements and matched them with numbers, reinforcing our work with ten frames.

K2

Katie Reddington, Sue MacDonald and Mika Allicer

In connection with our inquiry unit "Home," K2's had a wonderful field trip to Baby World. Our students learn about people who help us in the community. They visited four fun stations. First, they went to the fire station. Here, they learned about fire safety and the tools used by firefighters. Next, they visited the police station. They wore police uniforms, learned about safety, and played pretend police. The third place was the bakery. The last stop was the baby care center. They learned about looking after babies and felt what it's like to care for small ones. They connected how these helpers make "home" feel safe and warm. This field trip helped the kids understand more about helpers in our community and how they make our homes better.

K3

Dean Fletes and Anuschka Etsebeth

A Journey to Space! Let's use our imaginations and create our own space station! To make this possible, we set up three exciting stations. At the first station, students had three options. They could either build a rocket with Legos, paint a rocket, or construct one using a pre-printed design or their own unique designs with paper and craft materials. The second station, to express or illustrate what they might experience upon stepping into space. Finally, at the third station, students were asked to draw and explain what they would take with them to space. Their ideas varied from talking magical balls that can change into food, to flags representing their home countries, and even the idea of taking the entire class - writing down each classmate's name.

K2 (Yani Wang)

This week’s K2 German class theme continues with farm animals. Students played classification games in class, such as "Farm animals and their children", "What are farm animals' homes called", "What can farm animals provide to humans", etc. We also made a game "Farm Animal Sorting" using magnet cards. Students need to remember the positions of several farm animals in a short time and rearrange them. We read two German picture story books about farm animals, "Mama Muh schaukelt" and "Lieselotte Lauert". Through stories, students gain some understanding of the lives of farm animals. This week's craft is for students to use cardboard, scissors, glue and colored pens to make a cow.

K3 (Yani Wang)

This week's K3 German theme is Imagination-Monsters. Students first tell what characteristics they know about monsters, such as being very tall, having many eyes, ears, horns on their heads, and liking to live in dark places. The students conducted fun classroom activities, throwing dice and drawing monsters. Each student must have a certain description of the monster he or she draws, such as what your monster is called, what is special about it, etc. This week we watched the popular science video for children "How We Conquer Fear" and read the picture book story "Riese Rick macht sich schick".

We continued to learn the new German letter T this week, including the upper and lower case of the letter, and simple spelling.
