Fifth Grade Graduation Projects

On May 28, the fifth-grade students of Tsinglan School ushered in an important day of this school year - the graduation project exhibition. They used various presentation methods to propose solutions to the world's problems. In-depth problem research and detailed data analysis reflected the rigorous attitude and excellent ability of the young researchers.

This year the projects involved more than 130 students in 46 teams, carefully produced promotional videos, physical models of waste transformation, eye-catching brochures, unique cultural and creative souvenirs, limited-time charity sales, energy-saving knowledge quizzes, and interactive games. In this event, fifth graders of Tsinglan School showcased an action plan to change the future.

It all started with the United Nation’s 17 Sustainable Development Goals. Students researched the goals and where specific goals are needed most in the world. Finding real-world examples, the students presented their findings to the class. These findings included a country’s problems, who they affect, and what the country and others in the world are doing to alleviate these issues.

“I learned that not all kids in the world are the same like us. Some of them cannot talk, cannot walk, or even cannot do simple math problems. I also learned that we should be more patient with them.” ——Alisa Liu (G5-3)

——Alisa Liu (G5-3)

Once thoroughly knowledgeable on the Global Goals, students formed groups and found an issue in the community to address. This is where the hard work began. After forming an action plan, students were tasked with contacting companies, landowners, and government officials. Not only did this require preparation and excellent communication skills, but also a strong amount of confidence to approach adults about such serious matters.

“Every time we finished a task, there was another task for us to do.” ——Sky Hu (G5-7)

——Sky Hu(G5-7)

Step by step, students worked through their action plans, including various hiccups along the way. Students learned that things do not always go the way we plan, and persevering is the only way forward. It takes time to make a difference, and these scholars put in several hours outside of school time to make their community a better place for others.

“I learned that it is better to finish early than to rush through all the things.”——Jojo Luo (G5-6)

“It’s hard to find time that is okay for three people.”——Jessica Chen (G5-7)

“During the graduation project, I found out that our companionship became better.”——Jacklyn Liu (G5-6)

——Jojo Luo(G5-6)

——Jessica Chen(G5-7)

——Jacklyn Liu(G5-6)

Even when students were on their way to completing their action plans, they then had to devise an inspiring presentation to display their work. This past Tuesday was the culmination of a year’s worth of work and showcased the students’ skills of collaboration, organization, and innovation. More importantly, they not only showed common problems currently faced by all mankind, but also called on more people to join their small actions to solve the big world problems.

“The highlights of this experience were being able to interact with the children by talking and playing with them. We read books and did puzzles. One challenge was getting enough money from the charity sale to donate to the children. At one point, we realized we would not be able to earn the amount of money we planned, so the second time we sold the plants at a higher price, and the problem was solved.” ——Angela Luo (G5-3)

——Angela Luo(G5-3)

Congratulations to all the fifth graders for making our society a better place! We believe every act of kindness leaves a positive mark in this world. We hope the students will stick to these beautiful qualities in the days to come, and continue to try and use practical actions to make our world a better place - even a little bit. Finally, thank you to all the parents, students, and staff who came to lend support and learn something new!
