Wild Elephant Tracking

Xishuangbanna Wild Elephant Valley was China's first national park dedicated to wildlife protection and environmental conservation. It was often referred to as the "bridge of communication between humans and Asian elephants." During their visit, the children learned that protecting Asian elephants and their natural habitats was a mission for every young citizen. They explored the Elephant Museum, where they learned about the survival status of Asian elephants, understood the significance of the Asian elephants in China, and discovered ways to foster harmony between humans, animals, and nature. The children enthusiastically contributed to the cause of Asian elephant conservation.

The adventure began with warm-up games led by Ms. Rhiannon. During these activities, the children learned vocabulary related to elephant body parts, such as "eye," "tusk," and "mouth." They also revisited their previous knowledge about elephants, which sparked their curiosity and interest even more.

At Wild Elephant Valley, the children had the incredible opportunity to observe Asian elephants up close. They learned that these elephants were highly intelligent and had a diet consisting of plants. The children watched as the elephants foraged, drank water, and underwent health checks. They showed great kindness by feeding the elephants fruits and vegetables. The children also explored the Snake and Lizard Park and the Butterfly Garden. This unforgettable experience taught them the importance of protecting elephants and reinforced the necessity of cherishing life and maintaining the balance of our natural ecosystem.

04

Manzhang Village

At Manzhang Village, the children immersed themselves in traditional activities such as pottery making, papermaking, and learning about the Beiye Scriptures, which are recognized as national intangible cultural heritage. These hands-on experiences enabled the children to understand, accept, and appreciate their cultural roots and historical heritage from an early age. Engaging in these activities fostered a sense of cultural confidence and pride in the children, contributing to the preservation and development of Chinese culture.

05

Xishuangbanna Tropical Botanical

The Xishuangbanna Chinese Academy of Sciences Botanical Garden is currently China's largest botanical garden in terms of area, with the most diverse collection of plant species among specialized botanical gardens. Teachers from the Chinese Academy of Sciences lead children through the garden, opening up the "encyclopedia" of plants through botanical education. Among over 3,000 species, many exotic varieties awaited discovery and observation.

Here, seeds brought back by Premier Zhou Enlai from West Africa have been successfully planted. There's the "mystery fruit" that can alter taste perceptions, the "water lily" you can ride, the "rain tree" that predicts rain, the "pitcher plant" that eats small insects, the dancing grass that moves to musical rhythms, the "clock flower" that blooms on schedule, the poisonous "manchineel" tree sap, the towering "baobab tree," the ruthless "carnivorous plant," the majestic "forest of solitary trees," the colorful "sky garden," the peculiar "old stem flowering," and the rainforest spectacle of flying vines. Here, listening to the teachers from the Chinese Academy of Sciences brings a vivid and engaging lesson on biodiversity, gaining natural knowledge that cannot be found in books.

Night Tour of the Botanical Gardens

Firefly Wonderland

From May to July every year is the peak season for fireflies. Children entered the Chinese Academy of Sciences Botanical Garden together for a night adventure, stepping into the fairy tale world of fireflies. They learned about the luminescence mechanism of fireflies, how they survive in the forest, and how they reproduce. With these questions in mind, they ventured into the secret garden of fireflies.

"Shadow of Ulan" Night Tour, Discovering Nocturnal Creatures

"Ulan" in Dai language means the universe and all things. In the summer of Xishuangbanna, the night may be more splendid than the day. At night, Xishuangbanna Botanical Garden is particularly quiet, devoid of the bustling crowds of daytime. However, it is also lively with the symphony of nature — cicadas chirping, frogs croaking. In the night sky, the fireflies dancing everywhere are like a masterpiece directed and performed by nature itself.

Children followed us to observe the nocturnal creatures and their nighttime behaviors. They linked their knowledge of animals and plants by observing how insects gnaw on plants. The phenomena of nocturnal creatures are extremely fascinating. Children could observe the life forms that are not visible during the day, listen to the calls of frogs, insects, and large geckos, and find various nocturnal animals such as stick insects, tropical spiders, grasshoppers, and moths. Lucky ones might even encounter animals (like tailorbirds, lizards, bees) in cute sleeping poses and more. There were countless interesting phenomena, making it a fun and intriguing experience that was often unforgettable.

When the children saw flying squirrels, stick insects, millipedes, tree lizards, tree frogs, flower mantises, bird nests (such as the blue-throated barbet), ant nests, shield bugs, orb-weaver spiders, and swallowtail butterflies, they were amazed by the Creator's marvels and wonders!

Children were fascinated by the vibrant nightlife of these "little spirits" and enjoyed exploring the mysteries of nature. This adventure allowed them to experience the hidden magic of the forest and develop a profound appreciation for the wonders of the natural world.

Exploring Sun River Forest Park

The children enjoyed a delightful tour of Sun River Forest Park, where they encountered various animals like rhinos, barking deer, and red pandas. They took pictures with red pandas, eagerly watched for peacocks to spread their feathers, fed adorable egrets, and greeted groups of monkeys. These close encounters allowed the children to learn about the animals' characteristics, behaviors, and habitats. This experience fostered a deeper understanding and appreciation for the environment and encouraged them to develop a sense of care and respect for nature.

ECSTEM Class in the Great Forest

Amidst the majestic forest, the children participated in an engaging ECSTEM class, exploring the principles behind light trapping. They experienced the joy and satisfaction of learning new concepts and were encouraged to exhibit listening skills, take turns in conversations, and engage in language activities. They asked questions and tested various ideas, broadening their understanding of the world and exploring the habitats of wild animals.

Night Adventure at the Red Panda Manor - Embracing Nature's Wonders

In the evening, children discovered various insects along the way at the Red Panda Manor: praying mantises, spiders, bamboo worms, ladybugs, tree frogs, crickets, and more. Through observing the growth and development of these insects, children learned about the wonders and diversity of life. Observing insects helps children improve their observation skills and learn to discover small details in everyday life. It not only has educational significance but also brings joy and discovery, enriching children's understanding of the natural world.

The children visited the birthplace of Pu'er tea, where they engaged in harvesting tea leaves, selecting the best ones, and making tea cakes. This hands-on experience allowed them to understand the growth conditions of tea plants, the harvesting process, and the steps involved in processing tea. By actively participating in tea picking and production, the children enhanced their manual dexterity and cooperation skills while enjoying the experience of creating something from nature.

IEYC Lesson in the Tea Garden

In the serene setting of the tea garden, the children learned about various types of tea from around the world. They observed and made tea with a distinctive British twist, deepening their interest in and understanding of tea culture. This activity also fostered their cultural appreciation and social-emotional development, as they explored the global significance of tea and its traditions.

A Poetic Stroll through the

Rainforests of Xishuangbanna

At the entrance of Kinu Mountain Village in the tropical rainforest, large fruit trees such as passion fruit, mango, and dragon fruit caught the children's eyes. Breathing the fresh air different from the city, listening to the lively sounds of nature around them, their hearts were filled with awe and excitement.

As the children walked along the path, towering trees surrounded them, thick layers of fallen leaves beneath their feet, accompanied by the songs of birds and the murmuring of streams. The natural surroundings seemed to welcome them to this untouched paradise. Immersed in nature, the children appreciated its biodiversity.

Deep within the rainforest, they observed the interdependence and harmonious coexistence between plants and animals: golden ants, wild yams, banyan trees, camphor trees, wild banana plants, scorpion grass, warbler nests, wild green ivy, ant nests, leaf moths, and bamboo leaf green snakes. Being in nature prompted the children to contemplate the relationship between humans and nature, and their connection to all living things.

Crossing the rainforest also tested the children's resilience and courage. Guided by their leader, they walked with confidence and vigor. If they stumbled, they got back up; encountering mud pits, they stepped boldly forward; crossing streams, they waded through together hand in hand. Supporting each other, they conquered one hill after another, traversing one dense forest after another, finally reaching their destination.

This journey through the tropical rainforest of Kinu Mountain deeply impressed everyone with the magic and beauty of nature. Every leaf, every drop of water, and every bird's call here exuded the power and beauty of life.
