Did you know that boarding school life not only helps students become more independent and manage their time better, but also boosts their academic performance?
At LEH Foshan, our boarding programme plays a pivotal role in fostering strong learning habits and academic discipline. Watch our video to hear from Mr Banks, our Head of Boarding, and Ms Stevens, our Head of English, as they share how we support our students' growth and success.
Teacher-Supervised Study Sessions:
A key component of our boarding programme is the teacher-supervised study sessions. A member of the teaching staff is always present to supervise and support the students, ensuring they stay focused and have immediate help when needed. This supportive environment fosters good study habits and academic discipline, contributing significantly to students' success.
Strict Mobile Phone Policy:
One of the critical aspects of the boarding programme is the management of mobile phone usage. Students are allowed access to their phones for only 30 minutes after study time during social periods. This policy minimises distractions, allowing students to focus better on their studies and personal interactions.
Homework Planner:
Each student receives a homework planner, which helps them manage their assignments effectively. This planner ensures that students are organised and can keep track of their daily and weekly homework, balancing their workload and preventing last-minute cramming.
An Activity-Filled Day:
A typical day for a boarding student at LEH Foshan is thoughtfully structured to balance academics, extracurricular activities, and personal time. The day begins with a healthy breakfast, followed by lessons and breaks and extracurricular activities like sports, arts, and clubs. Evenings are dedicated to supervised study sessions to complete homework and reinforce learning, followed by a designated period for relaxation and socialisation. This balanced schedule supports academic excellence and promotes overall development, preparing students for success in and out of the classroom.
Dedicated Learning Spaces
Main Study Room (for Y7-9):
Younger Secondary students benefit from a spacious and well-equipped study room within the boarding house. This large study area is thoughtfully furnished with desks, comfortable chairs, and ample electrical sockets for charging devices, creating an ideal environment for learning.
Study Studios (for Y10-13):
In response to the evolving needs of our student body and the expansion of our school, we have introduced smaller-sized study studios in addition to the main study room within the boarding houses. This innovation caters to the varied learning preferences and requirements of our students, ensuring a conducive environment for everyone to thrive academically.
Consistent Learning Practices
Incremental Learning Approach:
The daily study sessions in the boarding programme emphasise the importance of consistent daily study habits over sporadic intense study sessions. Students are encouraged to build their knowledge incrementally, day by day, year by year, which helps in solidifying understanding and retention of the material.
Organisation and Discipline:
Good study habits are further reinforced by teaching students to keep neat and organised notes. Whether working on paper or digitally, maintaining well-labelled and easily accessible files is stressed. This organisation extends to being punctual, prepared for lessons, and ensuring homework is completed to the best of their abilities.
Extracurricular Activities:
Beyond academics, the boarding programme supports holistic development by incorporating extracurricular activities. These activities help students develop leadership, teamwork, and other personal skills that contribute to their overall growth. Participation in sports, arts, and various clubs not only enhances students' social and emotional skills but also reinforces their academic performance. Studies show that students engaged in extracurricular activities often exhibit improved concentration, better time management, and a stronger commitment to their studies.
In conclusion, the boarding programme at LEH Foshan effectively nurtures good learning habits by providing a structured environment, promoting consistent study routines, and encouraging organisational skills and reflective learning. This comprehensive approach not only enhances academic performance but also prepares students for lifelong success.
