Over the years, parenting styles have evolved, with today's generation adopting different approaches compared to previous ones. OCAC Early Years had the privilege of hosting a Positive Parenting Workshop, which provided an excellent platform for both parents and teachers to share their experiences and insights.
Miss Whitney introduced a practical three-step approach for communicating with children during tantrums or challenging moments:
1. Remain Calm
2. Set Limits
3. Redirect Behavior
These communication strategies help manage difficult situations and contribute to nurturing children who will grow into adults capable of effectively regulating their emotions.
Participants then engaged in a group brainstorming activity, applying the three-step approach to navigate various scenarios. It was encouraging to witness each group share openly, discuss personal challenges, and support one another in building confidence in their parenting styles. The workshop addressed managing challenging behaviors and emphasized the importance of recognizing and praising positive behavior. Together, we practiced language and phrases that can be seamlessly incorporated into daily routines to motivate children further.
Miss Xu also discussed and shared how to guide older children and handle the dynamic changes of young children in different age groups. She suggests turning to friends, a child's teacher, a classmate's parent, or a friend when faced with difficulties and advises all family members to be involved in parenting. Additionally, Miss Xu recommended several books on Positive Parenting, providing deeper insights into this approach. The session concluded with a collective reflection on the importance of Positive Parenting in fostering healthy family relationships.
We look forward to the next Parent Workshops hosted by our knowledgeable OCAC Early Years teachers.
