Sias International School successfully held a seminar on college guidance and planning before the National Day Holiday. The keynote speaker was Dr. Grace Cheng Dodge, former Associate Director of Admissions at Harvard University. Dr. Grace Cheng Dodge presented on education planning for students of different age groups and different education systems. She also answered parents' questions one-on-one in the Q&A session to address their concerns about higher education.

In her talk, Dr. Grace divided what students need to learn into two main categories, analogous to the front and back wheels of a bicycle. Front-wheel skills are intangible qualities such as honesty, responsibility, kindness and confidence. Back-wheel skills, on the other hand, are quantifiable, i.e., specific awards, standardized grades and so on. And in the admission process of top American schools like Harvard University, front-wheel skills are a more important reference than back-wheel skills. This is because they prefer students who spend a lot of time exploring the world, searching for personal interests, and developing in a holistic manner, thus paving the way for their future in society.

You don't recommend that students take standardized tests such as the TOEFL, SAT, ACT, etc., early in Grades 9-11, so then what if he or she scores low on these tests after Grade 11?

First, you can visit the official website to take free tests, which will not be recorded in the system. In addition, the reason why it is not recommended to take formal exams many times is that every test has a record. If admissions officers see the many previous records of exams, they will assume that the applicant does not have time to develop their interests and hobbies which most of U.S. college admissions officers value.

My child is very young and is still undecided on exactly what path to take. If I want my child to transfer to an international school in the future when would be a good time to do so?

The earlier the better, as children need to learn a second language as soon as possible during the language-sensitive period and adapt to learning and living in an English-only environment. In many international schools, if a child is not fluent in English by Grade 7, he or she is already excluded.

The size of an international school does not directly affect a student's chances of application and admission. Every university is committed to ensuring a fair admissions process that focuses on students’ attributes such as academic performance, leadership skills, and other overall indicators. Therefore, regardless of the size of the school, each applicant will be fairly evaluated based on their overall performance. Colleges and universities admit students themselves, not the ranking or geographic location of their high school.

What kind of extracurricular interest classes or activities are more appealing to U.S. admissions officers?

U. S. admissions officers do not have a specific preference for the type of extracurricular interest classes or activities. The officers value the sincerity enthusiasm of the students in choosing activities and the experience of participating in these activities that students gain as individuals. Students are advised to participate in activities that they are genuinely interested in and passionate about, as this will better showcase their personalities and passions. Active involvement and sustained commitment and accomplishments in activities, especially demonstrations of leadership skills and contributions to the community, are usually more attractive to admissions officers. This genuine passion and commitment impress admissions committees more than the mere pursuit of fame or superficial diversity.

What are the distinct advantages of an international school's college counseling team over an agency that provides college counseling services during the college application and admissions process?

The advantage of an international school providing support in planning for students' college admission is its all-around support. Compared to “outside organizations”, international schools offer not only systematic curricula and academic evaluations but also comprehensive support during the college application process. College admissions officers usually communicate with international school's college counseling consultants about their applicants instead of independent consultants. This is because consultants at schools can provide detailed information about a student's academic performance, the level of the curriculum, and the quality of the school's education to help admissions officers assess the standardization and authenticity of an applicant's high school educational background. On the contrary, college counseling agencies that use a model to improve English exam scores, prepare for tests and enhance education background and systematically assess and support students in developing their interests and hobbies. Therefore, international schools are seen as more reliable and authoritative sources of information about students during the admissions process.
