It's a wrap,everyone has worked hard.

On October 24, 2024, at 20:35, the production came to an end.

Among the crowd, the person in a white jacket repeatedly acknowledging the hard work is the director of this promotional film,  Jiaxin  Chen.

Upon first meeting Director Jiaxin Chen , he was dressed for the outdoors, with a backpack and hiking boots, embodying an "adventurer's aura." It's probably this very quality that led to his invitation to direct the promotional video "Next Stop Winter Olympics: Italian Fantasy Mountains" for the 2026 Winter Olympics venue, as he frequently moves between film sets and snowy landscapes.

This year is his 12th year in the profession.

When discussing how he should introduce himself now, with accolades to his name, he still firmly identifies as: a short film director with a cinematic dream.

What is a director?

A director is someone who can make you see the sights and sounds of Chungking Express in a film, feel the snowy landscapes of the Nordic regions, and when you watch the finished piece, you might feel a sudden urge to set off on a journey, and also experience an unusual tingling in your body and a heart-pounding sensation.

Similar to the famous director Quentin Tarantino, who started as a video store clerk, Jiaxin Chen from Chongqing was a car salesman before becoming a director. "This indeed requires courage." It is the initial intention, the passion, and even more, the persistence that led him to step into the world of light and shadow.

"Micro-films were all the rage back then. I used compact equipment to create my first micro-film, capturing the experiences of a French girl in Chongqing," Jiaxin Chen reminisced. This French documentary unexpectedly took off. It not only sparked his aspiration to direct but also paved the way for him to collaborate with the Chongqing Tourism Bureau. From there, his directorial journey officially began.

Today, Jiaxin Chen is the founder of OurFilm and one of the 14 directors from China's southwest region selected through a special program by the "University of Southern California School of Cinematic Arts." His portfolio has grown from tourism promos to commercial ads, spanning real estate, automobiles, and consumer goods, bringing a vibrant and diverse world to life through his camera lens.

"Listening to professional advice isn't something all clients can commit to. Even fewer are willing to invest for the sake of quality, but HDBJ has managed to do so," Jiaxin Chen reflected on his filming experience at HDBJ. "It's rare in China to find an institution that fosters a relatively liberal environment, respects the creator's vision, and encourages a diverse range of perspectives. I believe this is likely connected to the educational philosophy of HDBJ."

At HDBJ, Jiaxin Chen experienced an unparalleled sense of creative liberty and backing. The shared values between them facilitated a smoother collaboration, enabling him to unleash his creativity and capture ephemeral inspirations and viewpoints, which he then translated into compelling narratives on screen.
In this environment, he transcends the role of a director to become an explorer, using his lens to seize every distinct angle and narrative.
For Jiaxin Chen, the most challenging aspect of taking on a project is not just capturing its surface appearance. "It's about more than filming students in class; it's about showcasing the potential and possibilities that students can achieve by being here." This approach to creating an imaginative and cinematic atmosphere allowed him to move beyond textbook filming methods and delve into the heart of campus life.
"It feels like I've returned to USC, and this isn't something that can be achieved with mere set design; it's about capturing an atmosphere," Jiaxin Chen said, as he and his team sought to capture as much scenery as possible. "We use wide shots for many of our scenes, aiming to capture more of the landscape without wanting to miss out on any of it."
In a marathon 29-hour shoot with 62 cast members, 19 location changes, and the meticulous setup of lighting and venues, as well as catering and prop management, only a team that operates with such "seamless" coordination could satisfy the every demand of a director known for his attention to detail and pursuit of perfection. His most profound impression of all the faculty and staff at HDBJ is their "professionalism."
The students' quick grasp of their roles also made the filming process more relaxed. "They can quickly get into character, and even with complex choreography, they adapt swiftly, as if they were professional actors. So, I began to hold them to the standards of superstars," he said with a grin. The film crew made numerous adjustments to angles and lighting, and the students patiently cooperated without complaint.
"Professor, let's hold on a bit longer, our school has plenty of planes passing by!" From Lydia Shao to Carrie Ye , when it comes to deciding between moving to another set or striving for a more compelling shot, they opt for the more inventive challenge. "Thank goodness we're located under a flight path!" the students jest.
The instant the lighting technician turned the lab and the air dome into a futuristic scene with his mastery of light and shadow, students gathered at the doorway, craning their necks to witness the director's "magic." "It's ARRI! Our school is incredibly cool, isn't it?" The awestruck remarks of the students reached Jiaxin Chen's ears, and with a smile, he looked at the children, envisioning that perhaps the next generation of "directors" might emerge from among them in the years to come.

*ARRI, the leading global manufacturer of professional cinematography equipment since 1917, has a significant presence in the film industry. In the 2023 Oscars, four out of five films nominated for Best Cinematography and six out of ten for Best Picture were shot using ARRI cameras.
What does it take to become a director?
A director must grasp the logic of storytelling, understand camera angles, manage rhythm and editing, be accountable for the final cut, develop a unique style, possess a vast knowledge, and create a piece that represents both their vision and the spirit of the times, so the world can see their work.
Perhaps this is the essence of a director: they use the camera to narrate stories, reveal the true colors behind the light and shadow, and immerse you in the experience to the point where you can hear the roar of an airplane through the screen. It's also about ensuring the perfect lighting and composition, making the entire crew wait in the chilly Beijing autumn mornings, and going to great lengths to capture a single shot from hundreds of different angles.
"Striving for excellence is about not settling! A director must go through challenges," Jiaxin Chen encourages every student with dreams of directing with his own passion and determination. He is convinced that only through relentless pursuit and a refusal to compromise can we create works of genuine value.
First, always aim to learn from the best!
Second, never settle when it comes to visual quality!
Third, if you have the opportunity, join large production teams and observe their methods. Intern in Hollywood to absorb aesthetics, camera language, logic, and hands-on experience.
These are the heartfelt recommendations Jiaxin Chen offers to any student aspiring to be a director.
"Everyone can direct for a minute." The pursuit of perfection is a basic trait for those chasing the dream of directing. "Creative persistence, always considering the audience's perspective, and ultimately, it's all about the audience," he further explained.
Observing these students filled with aspirations, Jiaxin Chen humbly refers to himself as the one who captures truth through the lens, while it is these students who tell the stories and the nurturing campus atmosphere that cultivates their dreams.
His journey to becoming a director was paved by the University of Southern California, and he believes that more students will follow their dreams from HDBJ in the future.

Students, remember this: today's scene may be wrapped, but in the grand play of life, you are not only the shining star but also the director of your own story. May you plant and harvest your own destiny.

On November 9, 2024, the promotional film capturing the daily cycle of HDBJ School will have its global premiere at the first open day event for the middle school.
That day will surely be a fine one, perfect for meeting and even better for getting to know each other.
Dear friends, if these scenes and musings from HDBJ have instilled in you a sense of hope and aspiration, then our efforts are worthwhile, bringing meaning to life.
Of course, if you enjoy it, feel free to share it.
