The Power of Physical Education: Building Strength, Mind, and Friendship Through Sports.

Hello, I’m Luna, the PE teacher at Merchiston Academy School. With a passion for sports and helping students reach their full potential, I guide them through various physical activities to build teamwork, resilience, and a love for fitness. It’s a pleasure to be part of the MAS community, where I encourage students to challenge themselves and grow both physically and mentally.

Physical Education:

At our school, Physical Education (PE) is not just about learning how to play different sports—it's about fostering a strong body, a sharp mind, and meaningful friendships. Our PE curriculum, which includes sports like basketball, football, frisbee, badminton, hockey, Table tennis, Dodgeball, Gym and our exciting Clan Competitions, is designed to develop a holistic approach to education, focusing on physical, mental, and social well-being.

在我们的学校,体育课不仅是让同学们学习不同的运动,更能让他们强健体魄、敏捷思维、建立友谊。我们的体育课程包含了篮球、足球、飞盘、羽毛球、曲棍球、乒乓球、躲避球、体操以及刺激兴奋的部落友谊赛。我们的课程设计基于全面教育法,旨在培养学生的生理、心理及人际发展。


Physical Health: Building Strength and Resilience:

Engaging in physical activities regularly, whether it’s sprinting down the basketball court or mastering a frisbee throw, strengthens our bodies and helps build long-lasting health habits. These activities improve cardiovascular fitness, flexibility, coordination, and muscle strength. As students learn new skills and push their physical limits, they also build resilience and discipline—qualities that will serve them far beyond the sports field.

Through weekly Clan Competitions, students get to put their physical skills to the test in a fun, yet challenging environment. Whether it's the intensity of a football match or the precision required in badminton, each sport offers a unique way to stay active, engage different muscle groups, and maintain an overall healthy lifestyle.




生理健康:锻炼体魄、磨练意志

无论在篮球场冲锋陷阵,还是飞盘游戏中大显身手,参与体育活动都能够强健我们体魄、养成长期的健康习惯。这些体育活动改善心血管功能、提高身体灵活性、改善身体协调能力并增强肌肉力量。当同学们学到新的体育技能并超越自身极限时,他们同时也获得了坚韧的意志和纪律性,这些良好的品质也会让他们在体育场之外的领域受益。

通过每周的部落友谊赛,同学们将自己所学的体育技能运用到有趣的比赛当和挑战中。无论是足球比赛的紧张气氛还是羽毛球比赛的精细技巧,每一种体育运动都能提供一种独特的方式来让学生们保持活跃,调动各部分肌肉群并终身受益。




Mental Benefits: Enhancing Focus and Problem-Solving Skills

Physical activity isn’t just great for the body—it’s also essential for mental development. Sports require focus, strategy, and quick decision-making, all of which help sharpen the brain. For instance, basketball teaches players how to think quickly on their feet, while football requires teamwork and tactical awareness.

Moreover, engaging in physical activities boosts cognitive function by increasing blood flow to the brain. Studies have shown that regular physical exercise can improve memory, concentration, and academic performance. The brain thrives on challenges, and every time students take on a new skill or face a tough competition, they are training their mind to think critically, solve problems, and stay focused under pressure.

心理发展:强化注意力及解决困难的能力

体育活动不仅有利于生理健康,同时也能存进心理发展。体育运动需要专注力、策略以及快速决断能力,以上几点皆能够敏捷思维。比如,篮球运动能够使参与者思考如何快速移动步伐,而足球运动需要团队合作及战术思维。





Friendship and Teamwork: The Heart of Our School Community

But perhaps the most significant benefit of PE and Clan Competitions is the opportunity to develop friendship and teamwork. Sports are an incredible way for students to connect with one another, building relationships that extend beyond the classroom. Whether they’re celebrating a basketball win or strategizing their next move in a hockey match, students learn to trust each other and work together toward a common goal.

The Clan Competitions, in particular, foster a sense of unity and camaraderie. Students from different backgrounds and with different skills come together, supporting and helping one another to succeed. These competitions are about more than just winning—they’re about learning how to collaborate, communicate, and cheer each other on through both victories and challenges.


友情和团队合作:我们学校的精神

可以说,体育课程和部落友谊赛最显著的益处就是让学生建立友情和团队合作的精神。体育运动是一种能够让学生在课堂以外增进交流和联系的绝佳方法。不管是在庆祝篮球比赛的胜利还是共同制定曲棍球比赛战略,学生们都要学会互相信任及为了共同目标而协作。

部落友谊赛尤其可以促进团结和友谊。有着不同家庭背景和技能的学生聚在一起,为了胜利互相支持、互相帮助。这些比赛的目的远不止于取得胜利,通过胜利和挑战,它们更多地教会了同学们协作、交流、相互激励。




A Balanced Approach to Personal Growth

At the core of our PE activities is the belief that physical education is a key pillar in a well-rounded education. It’s about more than just improving physical fitness—it’s about cultivating mental strength, social skills, and a sense of belonging. Through basketball, football, frisbee, badminton, hockey, and our Clan Competitions, students have the chance to grow in every aspect of their lives, creating lifelong memories while developing important life skills.


平衡的个人成长方案

我们体育活动的核心是相信体育是全面教育的关键支柱。这不仅仅是提高身体素质,还关乎培养精神力量、社交技能和归属感。通过篮球、足球、飞盘、羽毛球、曲棍球和我们的部落比赛,学生有机会在生活的各个方面得到成长,在培养重要生活技能的同时创造终生难忘的回忆。

Looking Ahead

As we continue to engage in these activities, we encourage all students to embrace the spirit of sportsmanship, push their physical limits, support their peers, and most importantly—have fun. The journey through PE isn’t just about playing games—it’s about learning lessons that last a lifetime.

This week, on Wednesday, students had an incredible opportunity to try rowing for the first time! The Rowing Association came to our school to introduce this exciting sport, and it was a fantastic experience for everyone involved. Students learned the basics of rowing technique, balance, and teamwork, working together to propel their boats in sync. It was inspiring to see how quickly they adapted, showing great enthusiasm and determination. The event was not only about learning a new sport but also about pushing personal limits and experiencing the power of collaboration on the water.


展望未来

 随着我们继续参与这些活动,我们鼓励所有学生拥抱体育精神,突破身体极限,支持同伴,最重要的是——玩得开心。体育之旅不仅仅是玩游戏,而是学习终生难忘的课程。本周,星期三,学生们有一个难得的机会第一次尝试划船!赛艇协会来到我们学校介绍这项激动人心的运动,这对每个参与者来说都是一次美妙的经历。学生们学习了划船技术、平衡和团队合作的基础知识,共同努力推动他们的船同步前进。看到他们适应得如此之快,表现出极大的热情和决心,真是令人鼓舞。该活动不仅是关于学习一项新运动,也是关于突破个人极限和体验水上合作的力量。
