This figure not only signals the continued recovery of the U.S. study abroad market, but also reflects the attractiveness of U.S. higher education to students around the world.

Notably, this growth trend is the third consecutive year of increase after the 2019/20 academic year, demonstrating the enduring appeal of the United States as a study destination. Analysing the different academic stages, we observe the number of postgraduate students has increased significantly, surpassing the 500,000 mark, with a year-on-year growth rate of 7.6%. This changing trend indicates that more and more international students are choosing to further their education in the United States, especially at the graduate level.

In addition, the OPT program showed significant growth in participation, with 242,782 international students participating, an increase of 22.1% from the previous year. China continues to be one of major source countries for international student population in the United States. According to the latest statistics, the number of international students from China was 277,398, and despite a 4.2% decrease from previous academic year, China still accounts for 24.6% of all international students in the United States. This data shows that China's influence in the U.S. study abroad market remains significant.

China and India account for a significant proportion of the overall composition of international students, with the two together accounting for 54% of all international students in the United States. While India surpassed China as the largest source of international students for the first time in the 2023-2024 academic year, China's study abroad market continues to hold significant status and potential. U.S. colleges and universities have not lost their focus on Chinese students and continue to actively recruit Chinese students to maintain the diversity and vibrancy of their international education.

According to the report, California, New York and Texas continue to be the top regions for international students, with all three states having more than 50,000 international students. In addition, Massachusetts and Illinois are among the top states for international students, with institutions of higher education in these regions attracting large numbers of international students because of their reputation for academic excellence and rich educational resources.

This was closely followed by Engineering with 210,163 choices or 19%. Business and Management is also popular, with 159,810 students enrolled, or 14%. These data not only reveal international student preferences for STEM fields, but also highlight the global appeal and competitiveness of U.S. higher education in these fields.

Overall, STEM majors continue to grow in popularity as the top choice for international students, especially Chinese students, in U.S. higher education.
