本期我们将继续介绍孵化器项目,这是一个旨在培养学生成就创新能力和内在学习动力的PBL项目。学生们自主选题,学校配备专业导师,通过开题、中期和最终汇报,引导学生全程参与课题研究,以实现个人成长和学术突破。
In this issue, we will continue to introduce the Incubator Project, a PBL (Project Based Learning) that aims to foster students' achievement of innovation and intrinsic learning motivation. Students choose their own topics. The school is equipped with professional mentors who guide them throughout the whole process of project through the opening, mid-term and final presentations in order to achieve personal growth and academic breakthroughs.

项目旨在培养学生运用知识解决现实问题的能力,鼓励他们从被动学习转向主动探索,提升学术能力的同时,增强社会责任感和领导力。通过参与解决实际问题,学生们在实践中学习成长,为社会问题的解决贡献自己的力量。
The project aims to develop students' ability to apply knowledge to solve real-world problems, encourages them to shift from passive learning to active exploration, and to enhance their social responsibility and leadership while improving their academic skills. By engaging in solving real-world problems, students learn and grow through practice and contribute to the solution of social problems.

自2023年5月起,孵化器第一期正式启动,4个项目已成功完成。2024年3月迎来第二期。项目初期规划了5个主题,经过选拔和导师匹配,最终4个项目成功立项。本期,我们将介绍其中一个项目“孤独症群体纪录片”。
Since May 2023, the first phase of Incubator Project has been officially launched with four projects successfully completed. In March 2024,  we sees the second phase. Five topics were planned for the initial phase of project. After selection and mentor matching, four projects were finally successfully established. In this issue, we will introduce one of the projects, ‘Documentary on Autistic’.


随着社会对孤独症群体关注的增加,Henry和Justin注意到在新媒体平台上缺乏关于这一群体的客观报道。他们意识到,尽管公众对孤独症的兴趣日益增长,但现有的媒体宣传往往失真,忽视了大多数孤独症患者在日常生活中面临的挑战。为了修正这一问题,他们决定制作一部纪录片,通过采访天津一家大型孤独症非盈利康复组织的教师和志愿者,向公众展示孤独症群体的真实生活。

As societal interest in the autism community increased, Henry and Justin noticed a lack of objective reporting about this community on digital media platforms. They realised that despite the growing public interest in autism, the existing media promotion were often distorted and ignored the challenges that most autistic people face in their daily lives. To fix this problem, they decided to produce a documentary that would show the public the real life of the autism community through interviews with teachers and volunteers from a large autism non-profit rehabilitation organisation in Tianjin.

初识与起源


Henry首次接触孤独症非营利组织是通过同学Michael的介绍。当时,Michael已经在该组织担任志愿者两个月,他希望Henry能加入他们的行列。对于Henry来说,他并不了解这个群体,甚至不知道自闭症和孤独症是相同的症状。然而,他决定抱着试一试的心态,每周五与Michael一起到这个组织做志愿者。由于Henry对运动有着浓厚的兴趣,他很快成为了体育课的助教,而Michael则在科学课上帮助孩子们做简单的实验。
Henry was first introduced to the autism non-profit organisation through Michael. At that time, Michael had been volunteering with the organisation for two months and he wanted Henry to join them. For Henry, he didn't know much about the group and didn't even know the same condition. However, he decided to take a chance and volunteer with Michael at this organisation every Friday. As Henry has a keen interest in sports, he soon became a teaching assistant in the PE class, while Michael helped the children with simple experiments in the science class.

在志愿服务的过程中,Henry逐渐意识到孤独症群体面临的困难远超他的想象。他们在社区中遭受误解和排斥,甚至在体育课上也受到周边居民的冷眼。然而,机构的老师和志愿者们始终以微笑和耐心面对这些挑战。组织老师表达了希望更多人能够了解孤独症群体,与他们有更多的接触和理解。这些话语深深触动了Henry,激励他不仅继续参与志愿服务,还在学校成立了孤独症帮扶社团,希望能够为这个群体带来更多的关注和支持。
In the process of volunteering, Henry came to realise that the autistic community faced difficulties far beyond his imagination. They suffered from misunderstanding and rejection in the community, and were even given the cold shoulder by the neighbourhood residents during PE classes. However, teachers and volunteers of organisation always face these challenges with smiles and patience. Teachers expressed their hope that more people could learn about the autistic community and have more contact and understanding with them. These words touched Henry deeply and inspired him to not only continue to participate in volunteering, but also to set up an Autism Support Club at Farragut in the hope of bringing more attention and support to this group.

启发与灵感

在孤独症非盈利组织服务的过程中,Henry观察到孤独症群体在新媒体平台上的可见度极低,且现有的媒体报道常常不够客观,忽视了大多数孤独症患者面临的生活挑战,错误地将他们标签化为“天才”。他还注意到,尽管组织老师尝试记录患者的日常,但由于资源和技巧的限制,内容更新缓慢。因此,Henry决定制作一部以采访为主的纪录片,旨在真实展现孤独症患者的生活状态,并作为组织的宣传材料。
In his work with autism non-profit organisation, Henry has observed that the autism community has very little visibility on new media platforms, and the existing media promotion is often not objective enough, ignoring the challenges that the majority of autistic people face, and incorrectly labelling them as ‘gifted’. He also noticed that despite attempts by teachers to document the daily lives of patients, the content was slow to be updated due to resource and skill constraints. Therefore, Henry decided to produce an interview-based documentary, which aimed to give a realistic picture of the lives of autistic people and serve as promotional material for the organisation.

Henry then set about creating the documentary, focusing on the real lives and challenges of the autistic community, as well as the experiences of organisation's teachers, with a view to resonating with the audience. He thought his experience as a volunteer would be enough to handle interviews, but soon realised that the complexity of making a documentary was far greater than expected. To do this, Henry invested a lot of time in learning about psychology under the guidance of his counsellor Maggie, developed an interview outline based on each teacher's unique experience. Meanwhile, he found Justin as a partner to take on the documentary.

Henry approached Justin when he was preparing for his documentary on autism. Although Justin didn't know much about autism, he was more concerned about the daily life of this group and decided to take part in the project. During the filming process, they chose places frequented by autistic children and tried to capture their real lives. However, the autistic children's behaviour and vocalisations were difficult to control, posing a challenge to the filming. By diverting their attention, they eventually overcame these difficulties, and Justin gradually felt the inconvenience and social problems of autistic people in their daily life.

During the filming, Justin met Teacher Cui, which was impressed by her situation. With two daughters, one with autism and one without, Justin was initially worried about mentioning their differences, but was relieved by Cui's attitude. She is happy to share her eldest daughter's life in her moments, so that people can realise each child is a source of pride for her. Justin is touched by Cui's optimism and strong attitude, and her hope to raise awareness of the autistic community through the documentary.

感悟与体验


在采访过程中,Henry和Justin遇到了像崔老师这样热心的教师,他们的故事和热情给纪录片增添了温暖。然而,采访并非总是顺利,许多老师由于缺乏经验,在镜头前显得拘谨,回答也较为官方。为了捕捉到他们真实的情感和经历,Henry不厌其烦地重复提问,耐心引导,最终使老师们能够自然地表达出从事孤独症帮扶事业的真挚情感。这一过程虽然耗时耗力,但当看到老师们真情流露,Henry感到一切努力都是值得的。
During the interview, Henry and Justin met enthusiastic teacher like Cui, whose stories and enthusiasm added warmth to the documentary. However, the interviews didn't always go smoothly, as many of teachers appeared formal in front of the camera and answered in an official manner due to their lack of experience. In order to capture their true feelings and experiences, Henry repeated questions and guided them patiently, and teachers were able to naturally express their sincere feelings about helping autism. Although this process was time-consuming and labour-intensive, Henry felt that all the efforts were worthwhile when he saw teachers' true feelings come out.

Henry also experienced many touching moments during the filming process. One particular moment was at the autism gala, where he acted as the MC and helped a child with an eye disability hold the microphone. As the child began to perform, Henry was deeply impressed by the strength of his voice and his fluent recitation of poetry. After the evening, Henry happened to learn backstage that the headmaster of organisation was not only raising his own child, but had also adopted an autistic child and was carrying the weight of the entire organisation. The stories of these autistic people and the teachers who are committed to helping them were a source of great admiration and shock for Henry.

打磨与优化


拍摄工作告一段落后,Henry和Justin投身于纪录片的剪辑工作。为了让普通人更深入地理解孤独症患者,Justin选择了从大众视角出发,采用冷暗色调来表现孤独症群体面临的挑战。他们参考了多部关于残障人士和战争国家的纪录片,从中获得灵感,并结合自己的见解,完成了纪录片的初稿。Henry表示,由于时间限制,未能将所有采访内容纳入影片,这是他的遗憾,他计划未来制作一个更完整的版本。
After filming came to an end, Henry and Justin devoted themselves to editing the documentary. In order to give the general public a deeper understanding of autistic people, Justin chose to adopt a cold and dark colour palette from the public's point of view to show the challenges faced by the autistic community. They referenced several documentaries on people with disabilities and countries at war for inspiration and combined their own insights to complete the first draft of documentary. Henry expressed his regret that he was not able to include all the interviews in the film due to time constraints and plans to produce a more complete version in the future.

Once the first draft of documentary was completed, Henry and Justin had an in-depth conversation with teachers from the autism non-profit organisation to optimise the quality of film. Teachers provided footage of children's performances and additional material to enrich the documentary. They suggested adding more interviews to paint a deeper picture of the plight of the autism community. With the assistance of professionals, the documentary ‘Moving from Surviving to Thriving’ was eventually produced as a promotional film for the organisation, showcasing the lives of autistic people and organisation's tireless efforts.

传递与意义

Henry and Justin have each experienced significant personal growth through their involvement in the project. Henry's communication skills have improved as he interacted with teachers from the autism non-profit organisation and recognised the potential impact of his own actions, as he inadvertently inspired his classmates to take an interest in the group. In addition, the documentary they produced helped to streamline the volunteer training process, enabling volunteers to understand the autistic community more efficiently and thus help more effectively, while Justin drew inspiration from teachers' enthusiasm and hopes to maintain the same dedication in the future.

For the future, Henry would like to apply for a social science degree, which is closely related to his experience in the program. He has a keen interest in film and documentaries, enjoying studying film commentary and following film festival developments. He looks forward to furthering his hobbies through his studies. Justin, on the other hand, plans to study engineering and become an engineer in the future. He hopes to keep his professional direction independent from his hobby of photography so that he can pursue the art of photography more freely. This project not only deepened their understanding of the autistic community, but also pointed out the direction for their personal development and future career planning.

Can you tell us about the club you created?

一年前,我创立了这个孤独症帮扶社团,起因是组织里一个老师的期望,他希望更多人能了解和接触孤独症这个群体。我希望通过法拉古特学校这个平台,集结同学们的力量,帮助社会了解这些特殊的朋友们。我们的社团活动灵活多变,每当机构需要志愿者或活动支持时,我们就会在群里发起招募。随着毕业在即,我希望能有更多的学弟学妹加入,让这座桥梁继续延伸。

I created this Autism Support Club a year ago, due to the expectation of a teacher in the organisation who wanted more people to understand and reach out to this community. Through the platform of Farragut, I hope to gather the strengths of students to help the society understand these special friends. Our club activities are flexible. Whenever the organisation needs volunteers or support for campaigns, we will launch recruitment in the club. With the time of graduation approaching, I hope that more students will join us so that this bridge will continue to be extended.

What motivated you to volunteer for two years?

我曾经以为,参与公益活动只是为了给升学简历增色。但两年的志愿服务经历彻底改变了我的看法。我接触到了各种不同的群体,了解到这些孩子和家庭面临的挑战远比我最初想象的要复杂。他们中有些孩子智力有残疾,有些则遇到了其他许多困难。我开始意识到,尽管我的初衷可能有些功利,但我有能力去帮助他们,去影响和启发周围的人。这种认识让我的志愿服务变得有意义,也让我找到了坚持帮助这个群体的信仰。

I used to think that getting involved in charity work was just a way to spice up my CV for further education. But two years of volunteering has completely changed my perspective. I was exposed to a diverse group of people and learnt that the challenges faced by these children and families are far more complex than I initially thought. Some of them had children with intellectual disabilities, while others encountered many other difficulties. I began to realise that although my initial intentions may have been utilitarian, I had the ability to help them and to influence and inspire those around me. This realisation made my volunteering meaningful and helped me find the faith to persevere in helping this group.

你平时都是通过什么方式学习艺术风格的?

In what ways do you usually study the artistic style?

我钟爱电影,常在各大平台深入研究电影的每一个镜头。相较于电影本身的一个半小时,拉片可能需要我投入2到3个小时。我享受这个过程,因为每一帧、每一幕都显得意义非凡。最近,我对电影《749局》的导演陆川情有独钟,我观看了他的纪录片采访,尝试模仿他的一些风格,并将其融入我的纪录片创作中。我甚至撰写了一篇论文,详细描述了拉片的全过程,这不仅是对电影艺术的致敬,也是我个人艺术追求的一部分。

I love watching movies and often study every shot of films in depth on platforms. Film analysis may take me 2 to 3 hours compared to an hour and a half for the film itself. I enjoy the process because every frame and every scene seems to be significant. Recently, I have been fascinated by Director Lu Chuan of the film ‘Bureau 749’. I watched his documentary interviews and tried to imitate some of his styles and incorporate them into my documentary creation. I even wrote a thesis describing in detail the whole process of film analysis, which is not only a tribute to the art of movie, but also part of my personal artistic pursuit.

In this journey full of challenges and opportunities, Henry and Justin give an authentic voice to the autistic community with their documentary. They recorded the daily life of this group with their camera, as well as the touching stories of those selfless teachers and volunteers. Just like the brightest stars in the night sky, they illuminate the life of the autistic community in their own way, so that more people start to pay attention to and understand this special group. Let's witness together how they use the power of images to draw a bridge connecting autistic people and the society, lighting up the light of hope in their journey to spread love and understanding.
