Primary Years: Inquirers in Action｜小学部：探究者之旅

In Grade 1, students delved into the importance of nouns in sentences, understanding how they name people, animals, places, and things. In mathematics, they continued developing their skills in addition and subtraction, exploring new strategies for borrowing and carrying numbers. For their Unit of Inquiry, students concluded their exploration of expressing emotions and feelings through various creative mediums, including stories, music, writing, and drawing.

Grade 2 students explored poetry as a way to express themselves. They learned about acrostic poems by watching a video and reviewing examples. Using their iPads, they researched ideas on topics like family, friends, and feelings to inspire their own poems.

In Grade 3, the students have been exploring the concept of pitch and how sound waves vary depending on the pitch of the sounds produced. Their inquiries led them to create their own improvised musical instruments, capable of producing different pitched sounds, using basic materials such as plastic straws, tape, and string.

Grade 4 students have been learning about how the media has platforms containing content that can inform, entertain, or persuade. Students have been inquiring about topics that interest them so that they can create media to inform other people about what they have learnt.

Grade 5 students investigated how artistic expressions can influence our lives in various ways. Students explored ideas such as art therapy and how art inspires action and encouragement.

The Grade 6A students engaged in an exploration of silent movies, particularly those featuring Mr. Bean. Their analysis focussed on the distinctive characteristics of these films in relation to nonverbal communication, showcasing their inquisitive nature as they prepared to create their own cinematic projects. This process exemplified their commitment to inquiry-based learning.

Grade 6B students embraced their role as inquirers by researching various countries and their unique forms of expression, including culture, architecture, music, and cuisine. They showcased their findings through engaging presentations, sharing insights with the class and enhancing their understanding of global diversity.

Throughout the week, students across all grades have embraced their roles as inquirers, delving into the significance of curiosity and exploration. In their art classes, this spirit of inquiry has been particularly evident as they explored various artistic techniques and mediums, asking thoughtful questions and making connections between their creative processes and the world around them. This approach has not only enhanced their artistic skills but also deepened their understanding of the importance of questioning and exploring in all aspects of learning.

In music class, students embraced their inquiry role by exploring Chun Wan performances. They analysed musical elements and cultural significance, sparking curiosity and discussion. Their inquisitive approach enriched their understanding and appreciation of traditional and contemporary music.

In ICT class, they demonstrated what it means to be inquirers by diving into Scratch programming, screen turtle graphics, and variables with curiosity and creativity. They asked questions, tested ideas, and explored how coding concepts work together to create interactive projects. Through experimentation and problem-solving, they discovered the power of programming to bring our ideas to life.

Grade 3 students delved into the text ‘The Book That Never Ends’, acquiring a wealth of knowledge about the natural world. They learned that ants are insects characterised by their high level of organisation and social behaviour. These creatures exhibit a clear division of labour and collaborate closely as a cohesive unit. Additionally, they discovered that bamboo possesses remarkable growth potential and is capable of reaching impressive heights in a short period.

Grade 5 students delved into the text "Ancient People on Reading", exploring ancient methods and attitudes towards reading. They analysed the wisdom of scholars from the past, such as being humble and seeking truth from facts. This inspired them to reflect on their learning approaches to adopt more effective strategies and cultivate a more dedicated attitude towards their studies.

Students in Grade 5 and Grade 6 learned about health-themed knowledge. They explored and discussed the meaning of health and how to live a healthy life. Students in Grade 3 and Grade 4 learned about delicious food and explored the connection between food and art, as well as how food can reflect art.

Grade 2 students delved into time concepts. They investigated how to read hours and minutes, and explored the connection between time and daily events. By asking questions and making observations, they developed a deeper understanding of the relationship between time and processes, enhancing their ability to apply this knowledge in real-life situations.                

In Grade 3, they embarked on a wonderful exploration of digital coding. They started their exploration with the ID card numbers. This seemingly complicated string of numbers also contains a lot of information. The first six digits are the address code, representing the place where the household registration is located; the following eight digits are the birth date code, from which they can identify a person's birthday; then the next three digits are the sequence code, among which odd numbers are assigned to males, and even numbers are assigned to females; and the last digit is the verification code.

During the exploration process, They learned to carefully observe the arrangement rules and position characteristics of numbers to understand the meaning represented by each number through analysing these rules. They not only got to know the wide application of digital coding in life, such as telephone numbers, license plate numbers, etc., but also understood how to use numbers to express various kinds of information concisely and accurately, which improves logical thinking ability and information organising ability.

This week students from Lower Primary explored how music affects their emotions and how they can express themselves with different styles of music. Upper primary has been enthusiastically investigating the different ways athletes communicate with each other by working together to complete challenges using a range of different communication.

This week in PY Boarding sports with Ms. Yuki, the children participated in a fun and engaging three-legged race. This activity not only promoted physical fitness but also encouraged teamwork and problem-solving as the kids learned to coordinate their movements with a partner. Through this experience, they developed their inquiry skills by reflecting on their strategies and adapting to challenges, fostering a spirit of collaboration and curiosity.
