Jason

Mark

The Future Stars

Welcome to ‘The Future Stars’.

In this issue, we will continue to introduce the Incubator Project, a PBL (Project Based Learning) that aims to foster students' achievement of innovation and intrinsic learning motivation. Students choose their own topics. The school is equipped with professional mentors who guide them throughout the whole process of project through the opening, mid-term and final presentations in order to achieve personal growth and academic breakthroughs.

The project aims to develop students' ability to apply knowledge to solve real-world problems, encourages them to shift from passive learning to active exploration, and to enhance their social responsibility and leadership while improving their academic skills. By engaging in solving real-world problems, students learn and grow through practice and contribute to the solution of social problems.

Since May 2023, the first phase of Incubator Project has been officially launched with four projects successfully completed. In March 2024,  we sees the second phase. Five topics were planned for the initial phase of project. After selection and mentor matching, four projects were finally successfully established. In this issue, we will introduce the final project, 'Tianjin Modern Architecture Information Database'.

In Tianjin, areas such as Five Big Avenues and Jiefang South Road, as important foreign concession areas in China's history, retain a number of modern and contemporary buildings blending Chinese and Western styles, and are an important part of the city's culture. However, these areas currently lack an integrated and systematic guiding system. For this reason, Jerry, Jason and Mark decided to create a bilingual website on modern and contemporary historical buildings in Tianjin, aiming to introduce the basic information and backstory of these buildings to Chinese and foreign tourists, in order to enhance their treasure and love for the city's deep heritage.

Project Launch:
A Collision of Creativity and Passion

Jerry is a creative and enthusiastic student. During his time at Sophomore, he was touched by the success of his classmates in the first phase of Incubator Project and was eager to get involved. After much deliberation, Jerry recalled his father's background in architecture, which provided him with a wealth of invaluable information and background details, and realised that this was the entry point. Therefore, he approached his father with great anticipation and told him what he wanted to do.

During his communication with his father, Jerry learnt that there are many deficiencies in the existing guided tour information of concession areas such as Five Big Avenues and Jiefang South Road. This gave him the idea to design and develop a website to collect, summarise and collate information on all the modern and contemporary buildings in Tianjin. Through this website, he hopes that visitors will be able to access information about each building, including its age, design style, and the people who once lived in it, linking them to the city's development and helping to gain a deeper understanding of their importance and significance in Tianjin.

Data Integration:
Synergy of Precision and Efficiency

In Jerry's plan, they need to make a comprehensive and detailed statistics of modern and contemporary buildings in concession areas of Tianjin at first. This includes not only the appearance of buildings, but also the rich historical information behind them. They should be classified in a scientific and reasonable way. Faced with this difficult task, he thought of Jason, a student who is passionate about maths and actively participates in various maths competitions, which gives him a great advantage in project research and statistics, and can provide strong support for this project.

After receiving the task, Jason firstly summarised modern buildings in Tianjin, classified and ranked them according to the region and popularity. He then dug into the internet and literature to find out more about the history of these buildings. To ensure accuracy, Jason also checked with the staff of each building on the ground. In addition, he conducted on-site photography to gather the most up-to-date visual material. In the end, Jason divided the introduction of buildings into different divs to make it concise but effective. At this point, the basic content of website was successfully completed.

Jason's Field Research Process and Results

Technology Realisation:
Interdiv of Innovation and Practice

At the same time that Jerry contacted Jason, Mark took the initiative to send him a self-nomination message. Mark has always maintained a good relationship with Jerry and Jason. They often study together, participate in various activities together, and are inseparable from each other. When he learnt about Jerry's project, Mark showed great interest and volunteered to take on the important task of building the website. Benefiting from the presence of technicians who are well versed in programming, Mark began to learn under their guidance.

As an AP student, Mark first studied Computer Science (CSA) to learn how to write the underlying code. Next, he learned about the basic modes of operation and chose a faster server to ensure the site's stable operation. In terms of design, Mark selected web templates related to minimalist architectural design through WordPress, and added text and images Jason had collected. After a series of efforts, Tianjin Modern Architecture Information Database took shape.

Branding:
Combination of Culture and Design

Meanwhile, Jerry devoted himself to the naming of website and the design of logo. After much deliberation and repeated refinement, he finally settled on the meaningful name ‘Jingu Old Shadow’. As an alternative name for Tianjin, ‘Jingu’ contains the unique flavour of regional culture, while ‘Old Shadow’ precisely fits the core of project, highlighting the focus and retrospect of Tianjin's modern architecture, which is like a dusty image outlining the historical outline of city's architectural development, giving a distinctive theme to the website. The name of website was given a distinctive thematic identity.

After finalising the name of website, Jerry set about designing the logo, initially planning to use one of Tianjin's iconic buildings from the modern era to fit the theme and the name. However, after repeated discussions and modifications, Jerry finally sketched the outline of three rivers on Canvas, symbolising the geographical characteristics of Tianjin's ‘nine rivers’. The rivers not only represent Tianjin, but also carry the history of city, which, together with the name ‘Jingu Old Shadow’, makes the logo design of website and the whole project perfect.

Future Prospects:
A Vision of Continuity and Expansion

Due to time constraints, the website was not able to cover all the modern and contemporary buildings in Tianjin, which became a big regret in the minds of Jerry, Jason and Mark. They had hoped to include more buildings to bring the number up to expectation. However, due to their busy schedules and exams, the team lost track of time and the project ended in a hurry. Looking ahead, they plan to continue updating the website content and gradually improve the inclusion of information on modern architecture in areas such as Five Big Avenues and Jiefang South Road until it reaches a more complete state.

Meanwhile, they plans to expand on the existing foundation and develop a convenient applet to better serve domestic tourists. In addition, the team plans to incorporate a map and photo index function to help tourists quickly access architectural information and deepen their knowledge of Tianjin's modern and contemporary history. In terms of building introductions, they also intend to add a sound mode so that visitors do not need to check their mobile phones frequently during their visit, and can simply put on headphones to listen to historical details and stories behind each building, thus optimising the tour experience.

The group will populate some of attractions in the site.

Personal Growth:
Accumulation of Experience and Skills

In the project, each member gained first-time experience. Jerry was the first time to be in charge of project and to design a logo, thus accumulating experience in guidance and practice. Jason was the first time to engage in fieldwork and research, and honed his communication skills when interviewing staff members. He also learnt how to express historical buildings in English under the guidance of teacher Angel, while Mark built a website for the first time and gained a lot of experience in programming. In the information filling session, he and Jason worked well together and improved their teamwork skills.

Jerry and Jason hold similar visions for the future. Although historical research is not their core direction in the future, their love for history has always been the same. They plan to use their personal hobby as a basis to continue exploring and researching modern architecture in Tianjin. On the other hand, Mark is interested in pursuing further studies in the field of Mathematics, and has learnt a lot of valuable lessons from Jason's practice in data statistics and analysis during this project. In addition, the acquisition of web design skills will add to his future development.

Dialogues with Mark

1

Have you encountered any difficulties

when it comes to website building?

We encountered quite a few obstacles in the process of building the website. Firstly, I needed to learn some basic code setting from scratch. As I had no previous exposure, I could only ask questions to the tutor in time when I encountered something I did not know. As time went by, I gradually became proficient. The next step was data import session, which is also a more important part that requires a lot of training and practice. We worked together as a team and overcame the difficulties step by step, and finally successfully completed the construction of website.

2

What do you think of

the results of website you have built?

I didn't have high expectations for the final result, as many of techniques were new challenges for me. However, I learnt to create the jump page effect, which I didn't anticipate at all initially. Now, I have skilfully integrated this feature throughout the site, resulting in a significant improvement in both interactivity and user experience. Looking at the end result, I feel very proud of myself because not only did we accomplish what we set out to do, but we also exceeded expectations in some areas and reached a next level.

In the story-filled city of Tianjin, Jerry, Jason and Mark have built a digital bridge for the historical memory of modern architecture with their wisdom and sweat, interpreting the respect and love for history with their own actions. Let us all hope that this bridge can lead more people into the depths of Tianjin's history, to feel the beauty of those buildings sculpted by the years and to listen to those historical voices that have been forgotten by time. Jerry, Jason and Mark will continue to write their own wonderful chapters with their talent and passion on this road full of challenges and opportunities.

Finally, the third phase of Incubator project has been confirmed to be officially launched in the spring semester of this year. The project aims to provide a quality practice and innovation platform for students, and help your project growth and development. We hope that all students will pay attention to relevant notices in time, and actively grasp the opportunity to participate in it and fully display their talents and creativity.
