Research shows that all children have the ability and inclination to observe, explore, and discover the world around them during their early years (NRC, 2012). These are fundamental skills for scientific learning, which can and should be encouraged and supported in the first few years of a child's life. The National Science Teachers Association (NSTA) believes that learning science and engineering practices during early childhood fosters children's curiosity and joy in exploring the world around them, laying the foundation for their scientific learning throughout K-12 education and beyond.

At the kindergarten level, we guide children to explore STEM as an essential tool for understanding the world around them. STEM is not a single subject but an acronym for Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics education. These fields are grouped together not only because the skills and knowledge of each discipline are crucial for students' success but also because they are deeply interconnected in the real world and in how students learn most effectively. STEM learning is not acquired through a single lesson but is integrated into children's daily activities, where teachers seize opportunities to nurture their curiosity and interests, guiding them to explore together.

At BeeMee, we are blessed with a unique natural environment where children have daily opportunities to observe and explore the messages nature conveys to us. For example: How do seeds grow? Why are leaves green? Where do insects like to live? With the arrival of Arbor Day, the children at BeeMee launched a variety of planting activities, integrating STEM to explore the scientific, technological, engineering, and mathematical aspects of planting!

01

Life Cycle Exploration

By learning about the complete cycle of a seed from planting to fruition, children gained foundational knowledge about plant growth conditions. As they sowed tiny seeds with their own hands, they also planted curiosity about the life cycle in their minds. They will continue to observe the process of planting, germination, flowering, and fruition with this curiosity.

02

Engineering Design

Using recycled materials, the children created bilingual signs to label the plants. In this process, they fully exercised their imagination to envision what the seeds would grow into after sprouting and fruiting. In the future, they will verify the differences between their imagination and the actual results. At the same time, their creativity and language skills were also significantly developed.

Ecosystem Engineering

Scarecrow Making: While discussing the growth process of seeds with the children, two birds flew by, shifting the conversation. What if the birds ate the seeds the children had planted? And how could they protect the seeds without being there all the time? Together, the teachers and children designed a bird deterrent using bamboo poles and fabric, testing its effectiveness. This will be an ongoing observation process.

Mini Greenhouse Construction: The weather in Changsha is as unpredictable as a child's mood. Despite it being the rainy season, temperatures remain low. The children wondered: Can seeds sprout in such cold weather? What can we do to help them grow in a warm environment? The teachers and children used cling film and planting boxes to simulate a tropical climate. We look forward to the children's observations comparing the growth of indoor and outdoor plants.

Birdhouse Building: A second question arose: If we use scarecrows to drive birds away, where will the birds live? We want to protect our seeds, but birds are also friends of humans. How should we coexist with them and with nature? This led to the creation of birdhouses, which not only involved engineering but also taught children about the habitat needs of living creatures. In the future, the children will have many opportunities to observe whether this initiative helps the birds or provides more opportunities for them to interact with birds.

04

Sustainability in Action

Worm Castings Observation: Joshua has been dedicated to composting and cultivating nutrient-rich soil since last year, even bringing worms home. This spring, during planting season, he brought the worms and their castings back to the kindergarten. The children observed the soil and planted seeds in it. They will also have the opportunity to compare the growth of these seeds with those planted in regular soil by other classes.

Hydroponic Mung Bean Experiment: Besides soil, what other environments can seeds survive in? The children and teachers in this class created growth chambers for mung beans and sunflower seeds, allowing them to observe and record the seeds' growth daily.

Over the past week, we have seen the children's immense enthusiasm for planting and exploring life sciences. We believe that planting activities integrated with STEM education will plant seeds of curiosity in their hearts. These seeds will take root, sprout, bloom, and bear fruit, guiding the children toward higher wisdom. We also believe: "True STEM education lies in the curious eyes of children crouching to observe earthworms, in the debates over designing houses for birds. When we break down knowledge into tangible practices, science becomes a visible poem."
