At BeeMee Forest School, our Grade 3/4 students recently embarked on an inspiring journey through our Unit of Inquiry under the transdisciplinary theme "Sharing the Planet." Our central idea was clear and impactful: it is our responsibility not to waste finite resources in our community.

Discovery and Initial Reflection: From Waste to Environmental Action

学生们首先观察学校里常见的废弃物,很快发现纸张和塑料是最常被浪费的资源。他们回想起一年级时“共享地球”的探究经历,清楚记得塑料因无法降解而对环境造成巨大伤害。带着这份记忆,我们将纸张作为此次探究的核心。

Students began by examining common waste materials at school and quickly identified paper and plastic as the most frequently discarded items. Recalling our Grade 1 "Sharing the Planet" unit, students remembered that plastic has severe environmental consequences due to its inability to biodegrade. With this in mind, we chose paper as our focal point for this inquiry.

学生们热情地探索工业造纸过程,并独立研究每一步对环境的影响。他们发现了令人忧虑的问题:砍伐树木导致动物失去家园,运输木材释放污染气体,用氯漂白纸张污染水源,而造纸设备的运转更需消耗大量燃料。

The students eagerly investigated the industrial paper-making process, individually researching its environmental impacts. They uncovered some significant issues: cutting down trees destroys animal habitats, transporting timber emits pollution, bleaching paper with chlorine contaminates water supplies, and running machinery requires burning fossil fuels.

在这些发现的激励下,学生们积极行动,在学校发起回收纸张的倡议。他们精心制作海报,鼓励同学们将废纸放入专门的回收箱。他们意识到工业回收只是部分减轻环境危害,因此决定亲自动手,在校园里实现纸张再生。

Motivated by their discoveries, students took direct action by setting up recycling initiatives at school. They created informative posters encouraging peers to recycle paper in designated bins. Recognizing that industrial recycling only partially reduces environmental harm, students decided to recycle paper by hand within the school.

再生纸的过程充满了动手实践与团队合作。学生们收集废纸,手工撕碎,浸泡一整夜。在老师的协助下,他们使用搅拌机将纸浆制成纤维泥浆。学生们分组制作自己独特的纸张,创意地加入墨水和闪粉,创造出多样的纸艺效果。

The recycling process was a hands-on, collaborative experience. Students collected used paper, shredded it, and soaked it overnight. With help from teachers, they transformed the paper into pulp using a blender. In groups, students crafted their own unique sheets of paper, creatively experimenting with inks and glitter for different effects.


学生们巧妙地融合所学,以模型、手工书籍及艺术作品展示造纸过程。我们的跨学科探究更是精彩纷呈:

Integrating their learning creatively, students showcased the paper-making process through models, handmade books, and various artistic displays. Our holistic approach included cross-curricular connections: 

  • Chinese class explored the historical evolution from carvings to digital writing; 

  • PE class conducted experiments with paper aeroplanes; 

  • Music class constructed instruments from waste materials; 

  • Maths class tracked weekly recycling trends; 

  • Art class developed intricate paper sculptures; 

  • Science class tested paper absorbency and strength.


可持续发展:拓宽国际视野

UN Sustainable Goals: Being Internationally Minded

这一引人入胜的探究单元强调了可持续发展的重要性,将我们的活动直接与联合国可持续发展目标相联系:目标12——负责任的消费与生产,目标11——可持续城市与社区。三、四年级的学生们从中领悟了责任与可持续发展的宝贵知识,将助力他们创造一个更加绿色的未来。

This engaging Unit of Inquiry highlighted the importance of sustainability, directly linking our activities with UN Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs): SDG 12 - Responsible Consumption and Production, and SDG 11 - Sustainable Cities and Communities. Our Grade 3/4 students have learned valuable lessons about responsibility and sustainability, carrying forward vital knowledge for a greener future.
