Saturday Mornings and
Cross-Pacific Classes
Every Saturday at 9 a.m. Beijing time, night falls over the west coast of the United States. In a dorm room at UCSB, a light switches on as Wayne opens his laptop and iPad. The faces of four students appear on the screen—students he mentors as part of the BAAO Academic Support Programme.

After a week of university commitments, Wayne, an ISA alumnus and a double major in Physics and Computer Engineering, conducts his “online classroom” across a 15-hour time difference, bridging distances between two sides of the Pacific.

Despite clear and concise explanations during class, Wayne’s notes are packed with detailed derivations. Beyond that, his files hold carefully curated past exam questions, videos, and valuable resources, platforms, and tools. Behind each lesson lies meticulous and thorough preparation.
Preparing for a lesson takes far more time than delivering it.
From student to mentor, Wayne has come to realise that true teaching is not merely about transferring knowledge; it is a process of reorganisation and deep reflection. "For certain topics, I might be able to solve problems, but explaining them to students is an entirely different challenge. Knowing something and knowing how to teach it are two separate things. I have to retrace my own learning journey from the basics."

To help younger students grasp physics concepts for competitions, he revisits his own learning process, starting from fundamental concepts and formulas, reconstructing the logic behind them. "In doing so, I am essentially learning it all over again."
For Wayne, learning is never a one-way street; it is an exchange. On the one hand, teaching deepens his own understanding. On the other, students’ questions prompt him to see things from different perspectives, sometimes even revealing gaps in his own knowledge. This experience of mutual growth has given him a deeper appreciation of the IB philosophy—being a lifelong learner.

"Wayne never forces us to turn on our cameras." In his online lessons, the teacher-student dynamic is not as rigid as in traditional classrooms; rather, it feels more like an exchange of knowledge. The boundary between "teacher" and "student" is blurred—Wayne is only two or three years older than them, making the atmosphere more relaxed and equal.
He’s more like a friend guiding you through learning.
Having studied at ISA himself, there is a natural sense of connection. They have faced similar academic challenges, sometimes even being taught by the same physics teacher. "What he went through is exactly what I’m experiencing now, so we have a lot to talk about. He understands our struggles firsthand," one student shares. "If I go to the US in the future, I know I’ll have someone to support me."

When students come to Wayne with questions, he answers them carefully. On several occasions, the scheduled one-hour session has stretched to two because of the sheer number of queries. This mentor-student model turns learning into a freer and deeper dialogue.
Each weekly session covers a specific focus area. However, beyond the subject matter, students see Wayne as the embodiment of patience and dedication—"Whether it’s tackling a difficult problem or exploring a new field, if you approach it steadily and with focus, nothing is insurmountable." Such lessons, both spoken and unspoken, subtly instil in them an understanding that true growth does not come from passively receiving knowledge but from actively seeking, questioning, and exploring.

One of the most memorable moments for students was when Wayne shared some studying materials. More than just a useful resource, it served as a window into the future, offering them a glimpse of what university-level physics truly looks like. Concepts that once seemed distant and daunting suddenly became tangible.
"University physics doesn’t seem that intimidating after all—I think I’ll be able to adapt," one student reflected. That material, just a fragment of Wayne’s studies, became a bridge—a kind of "academic wormhole"—connecting high school and university learning, sparking curiosity and anticipation for the future.
This early exposure to future learning aligns with ISAIEG Student Enrichment Centre’s mission to create meaningful opportunities for student growth.

Wayne
Competitions Are Just the Beginning
Reflecting on his own experience with competitions during high school, Wayne realised that the true value of such events lies beyond their results. Instead, it is about uncovering the depth and breadth of a subject.
“High school knowledge is highly simplified. For students who are passionate about physics or astrophysics, the gap between what they learn in high school and what they will encounter in the future is vast,” Wayne explains.
Competitions, he believes, serve as a window into the true nature of a discipline. They are not just exams but opportunities for students to evaluate their interest in a field.

“Interest is the best teacher,” Wayne says. Through competitions, students can determine whether they are truly passionate about a subject and willing to explore it further.
"What path do I want to take in the future?" Many students do not yet have an answer. However, through the journey of the BAAO competition, they may have already taken the first step in finding one.

A Growing Community of Learning
Returning to ISA as a mentor is not just a responsibility; it’s also an emotional journey back home,
He still remembers being a high school student, filled with curiosity about the deeper realms of physics. With the support of his teachers and the Extended Essay (EE) component of the IBDP, he began exploring broader academic horizons. The ISAIEG Student Enrichment Centre was established in 2023 to foster such opportunities for students. This centre bridges classroom learning and real-world exploration, offering tailored academic enrichment programmes.
One of its key initiatives is the Academic Support Programme, which connects students with mentors, including distinguished professors from renowned institutions and alumni from top universities like Oxford, Cambridge, and Harvard. Alumni like Wayne are now part of ISA’s extensive academic resource network.

The seeds sown years ago have now grown into new branches. Wayne has become a "guide," passing on his knowledge, experience, and insights to the next generation of ISA students. Alongside Wayne, a graduate from the University of California, Davis, has "returned online" to mentor students in chemistry practices. This community will only continue to grow, becoming an intrinsic part of ISA’s academic culture.
Knowledge is not a one-way transfer from teacher to student—it flows freely within and across the ISA learning community. This dynamic exchange extends beyond competition coaching to various initiatives in the Student Enrichment Centre, from academic research projects to experiential learning opportunities. The centre is committed to offering students a platform for deep exploration across diverse fields.

The first formula Wayne shared with his students was F = G(m₁m₂)/r², Newton’s law of universal gravitation. Within ISA’s academic universe, this formula has taken on a new meaning.

“m₁ and m₂” are no longer just the masses of two celestial bodies; they represent the intellectual weight of mentors and students. “r²” is no longer a measure of spatial distance but the barriers of time and space dissolved by ISA’s educational ecosystem. And “G,” the gravitational constant, symbolises the academic platform created by the Student Enrichment Centre—a space where knowledge flows freely, igniting brilliance across generations.
This is the cosmic poem written by ISA’s learning community—a constellation of thought and knowledge, colliding, flowing, and evolve. It is a universe of perpetual growth, where connections and resonance shine brightly, endlessly revolving.
