This week, OCIS Primary School will launch a series called "Big Surprises in the Classroom," where students from each class will share the creativity and thoughtfulness behind their classroom decorations. Today, let’s step into the Grade 1 classroom and discover what surprises await.
推开这间教室的门,扑面而来的是孩子们天马行空的创造力和无处不在的探究精神。在这里,艺术、数学、语言和社会情感学习自然地融合在一起,而每一个角落都在讲述着孩子们如何用好奇心丈量世界的故事。
As you open the door to this classroom, you’re immediately greeted by the children’s boundless creativity and a spirit of inquiry that fills every corner. Here, art, math, language, and social-emotional learning blend seamlessly, with each space telling a story of how the children explore the world with curiosity.

At the back of the classroom, you’ll find castles and buildings crafted by the children themselves—and these aren’t just art projects! While measuring heights, they applied math skills like "non-standard unit measurement." When designing the exteriors, they incorporated their understanding of "community," and while constructing, they experimented with the science concept of "stability." This hands-on work perfectly reflects the interdisciplinary learning approach championed at OCIS.

Kenny the Koala’s Global Travel Diary
教室里最特别的成员是一只毛茸茸的小考拉——Kenny!它不仅是孩子们的好朋友,更是一位“环球旅行家”。假期里,Kenny会跟随不同的同学去旅行,而孩子们则用照片、绘画和简单的日记记录下它的冒险。这些记录不仅是语言表达的练习,更是“反思技能(Reflection Skills)”的培养——孩子们在分享中学会观察、思考和表达自己。
The most special member of the classroom is a fluffy little koala—Kenny! Not only is he the children’s good friend, but he’s also a "global traveler." During holidays, Kenny accompanies different students on their adventures, and the children document his journeys with photos, drawings, and simple diary entries. These records aren’t just language exercises; they also cultivate "Reflection Skills"—helping children observe, think critically, and express their experiences.

The reading nook in the classroom is always a favorite spot. Shelves are filled with English original picture books suitable for lower primary, from Eric Carle’s classics to the latest nature science reads. Here, children can dive into reading adventures anytime. Teachers regularly update the book selection based on inquiry themes, seamlessly connecting reading with the curriculum. As children gather on beanbag chairs for shared reading, they’re not just learning language—they’re developing a broader perspective on the world.

The reward magnets on the blackboard highlight each child’s shining moments: actively answering questions, tidying up independently, bravely trying new things, or helping classmates solve problems. These seemingly small actions are practical steps in nurturing "Caring Contributors." At OCIS, "We are different, but we are all amazing!"
