Each Unit of BeeMee Forest Academy's IEYC Curriculum has an exciting theme and developmental goals. Combined with the UK National EYFS Framework, which is based on holistic inquiry and game teaching methods, learning is tailored to meet individual learning and development needs of children. Through multi-cultural development and international perspective each child is prepared academically and emotionally as future global citizens.

In the growth journey of children, exploration and experience are the keys for them to understand the world. In february, the children of Class K2A at the BeeMee Forest Academy Xiangfu Campus embarked on a wonderful learning journey in the IEYC themed unit "Mindful Play"! Here, the children set out from the Mindfulness Exploration Hall, sparking their curiosity through explorations of sports, breathing, and nature, and expressing themselves with confidence in the optimized environment. Through a series of activities, they understood macro concepts, achieved exploration and expression, and finally reaped growth in the project conclusion practice. Let's step into this unit full of surprises together.

Entry Point - Mindful Exploratorium

We launched our new IEYC unit, Mindful Play, with an exciting entrance activity—the Mindful Exploratorium! The children had a fantastic time rotating through interactive stations designed to engage their senses, creativity, and mindfulness. Here’s a glimpse into their experience:
Playful Movement – Yoga & Balance: Practicing yoga and balance exercises to enhance focus and body awareness.
Creative Expression – Collaborative Mural: Working together to create a shared artwork, building teamwork and creativity.
Sensory Exploration – Nature’s Play Table: Engaging with natural materials to stimulate the senses and promote calm.
Rhythm & Sound – Music & Movement: Exploring self-expression through music, instruments, and dance.
Breath & Bubbles – Bubble Breathing Garden: Practicing mindful breathing with bubbles for relaxation and focus.
我们通过正念探索馆开启了全新的IEYC单元——正念游戏!孩子们兴奋地在各个互动站点间探索,感受、创造,并体验正念活动。以下是他们的精彩体验:

The Mindful Exploratorium was a huge success! The children embraced each activity with curiosity, creativity, and a growing awareness of their emotions and bodies.

Capturing Curiosity

In the Mindful Play unit, we nurtured curiosity by encouraging children to explore movement, breath, and the natural world with mindfulness. In one ECSTEM lesson, the children experimented with how air moves objects using only their breath. They tested different ways to make feathers float—practicing steady breathing for gentle movement, laughing to create bursts of air, and racing to blow feathers across the room. This playful exploration helped them connect breath with action while sharpening their focus and control.

Mindfulness exercises helped the children tune into their breathing and movements. They began with counted breathing, walking gently while taking slow, deep breaths. This calming activity encouraged focus and self-awareness. Later, in small groups, they traced patterns with their fingers, practicing sustained attention and careful movement.

Exploring trees through movement and discovery sparked curiosity about nature. The children balanced on logs like strong tree trunks, stretched their arms like branches, and swayed in the wind. They then collected leaves, bark, and seeds, comparing textures and colors in a group discussion. These activities encouraged observation, appreciation for nature, and imaginative play, helping children develop a deeper connection to the world around them.

In the Mindful Play unit, we created a supportive space where children could express themselves with confidence. Using the special K2A Broadcasting Area, they practiced speaking in front of others in a fun and engaging way. We explored different emotions through the Feelings Monsters activity. The children named and acted out feelings like happiness, sadness, and anger, helping them build emotional vocabulary and understand that all emotions are okay. Afterward, each child designed their own Feelings Monster and wrote about how they were feeling that day, encouraging self-reflection and communication.

The children also explored calming colors—blue, pink, and purple—discussing how these colors make them feel and where they see them in daily life. They brought in objects from home or the classroom, describing their items and explaining why they liked them. As they shared, they practiced listening and responding to classmates, improving their conversation skills. This activity not only expanded their vocabulary but also helped them gain confidence in speaking to a group. The K2A Broadcasting Area gave them a special place to practice public speaking, making it a fun and natural experience.

The Big Picture

In the Mindful Play unit, the children explored how small actions connect to bigger ideas, helping them understand the big picture of movement, creativity, and engineering in everyday life. They investigated how force and motion make tasks easier by experimenting with simple pulleys. They started by figuring out how to lift a heavy basket without carrying it. By pulling it with a rope, they discovered how pulleys distribute force, making lifting easier. Each child built a small bucket-and-pulley system, testing it with different surfaces and object weights.

In another activity, they practiced mindfulness through art appreciation. They observed four different works of fine art, discussing colors, details, and how each piece made them feel. Some children were drawn to bold colors, while others noticed intricate patterns. Using their observations as inspiration, they created their own artwork, exploring self-expression.

In another lesson, the children expanded their thinking from stepping stones to bridges, learning how structures help people cross obstacles. They studied famous bridges, including ones in Changsha, then worked in small groups to design and build their own. They tested their bridges to ensure they could support a toy car, gaining a deeper understanding of stability and problem-solving. These experiences helped the children see how ideas build upon one another, forming connections that shape the world around them.

In the Mindful Play unit, the children explored movement, measurement, and creativity through engaging hands-on activities. In an ECSTEM lesson, they investigated the concept of width by measuring and comparing their arm spans. Working in groups, they stretched their arms as wide as possible and used string to capture their full reach. This activity gave them a tangible understanding of size and comparison, as they noticed patterns—such as how taller students often had the widest arm spans.
在 “正念游戏” 单元中,孩子们通过引人入胜的实践活动探索了运动、测量和创造力。在一节早期科学、技术、工程、数学(ECSTEM)课上,他们通过测量和比较各自的臂展来探究宽度的概念。孩子们分组合作,尽可能地伸展双臂,并用绳子量出手臂完全伸展的长度。这项活动让他们对大小和比较有了切实的理解,因为他们注意到了一些规律,比如个子较高的学生通常臂展最大。
The children also explored gymnastics, learning how strength, flexibility, and coordination help athletes move with precision. After watching award-winning routines, they practiced simple movements like forward reaches, toe touches, and gentle backbends. They also experimented with different types of rolls, such as log rolls and egg rolls, focusing on smooth, controlled movement. While they found the challenge fun, they all agreed that professional routines were far too advanced for the classroom!

For an art-focused activity, the children revisited the special rocks they collected during a Forestry lesson and transformed them into beautifully painted stones. Inspired by stepping stones and outdoor art, they planned their designs, considering how colors and patterns could complement a garden. This project encouraged creativity and helped them see how art connects to the world around them.

In the final week of the unit, the children had the chance to learn yoga and then share their newfound knowledge with a younger class. As they taught the movements, they not only reinforced their understanding but also embraced the responsibility of guiding others. This experience allowed them to deepen their own learning, practice communication skills, and build confidence. By teaching yoga to their peers, they celebrated their journey of discovery, gaining a sense of accomplishment as they shared their growth and the mindfulness techniques they had explored.

On the final day of the unit, the children participated in a schoolwide yoga story class led by the foreign teacher team. This activity allowed them to reflect on their journey through the "Mindful Play" unit, where they had practiced mindfulness, movement, and body awareness. By practicing yoga, they were able to see how their understanding of controlled movement and focus had grown. The experience also tied together everything they had learned over the past six weeks, from breath control to mindful play. It was a wonderful opportunity for them to celebrate their progress and appreciate how far they’ve come.
