LEH International School Foshan is delighted to announce the appointment of Mrs Sarah MacDonald as the new Head of Sixth Form effective from August 2025.
Mrs MacDonald is an innovative international educator with nearly 20 years of experience in teaching and leading within diverse international curricula. Throughout her career, Mrs MacDonald has taught at various prestigious schools in Dubai, the UK, Greece, Canada and Indonesia. She has held significant leadership roles such as Deputy Head of Sixth Form and Head of Science. Her responsibilities have included academic and pastoral care, curriculum development, and coordinating teams to effectively deliver comprehensive educational programmes.
Mrs MacDonald holds a BEng in Chemical Engineering from Aston University and a PGCE in Science- Chemistry with QTS from the University of Birmingham. She is also a Times Higher Education Accredited Counsellor, equipped to guide students with university applications and beyond. After joining us in August 2024, she has devoted most of her efforts to the academic education and physical and mental health education of her students.
In addition to her usual teaching duties, Mrs MacDonald also has the role of Head of Sixth Form Boarding. She attaches great importance to the significance of "balance" in life, ensuring that every student can strike a proper balance between work and rest during their boarding period, allowing them to enjoy a rich variety of extracurricular activities while also receiving relevant academic support.
We recently had the privilege of interviewing Mrs MacDonald who shared her insights as well as her vision for fostering the academic, physical, and emotional growth of our Sixth Form students.
How does the school monitor and support students’ academic progress throughout Sixth Form?
The school continuously tracks and monitors academic data for each student. Insights and feedback from academic staff are regularly gathered, and strategies are implemented to ensure that all students can reach their full potential.
Each student has a personal tutor whom they meet with every day. The tutor builds a strong rapport with each student and maintains a holistic overview of their academic progress and wellbeing. Additionally, students receive mentoring during Study Sessions. In the Sixth Form, students are encouraged to regularly review and reflect on their progress, initially in a structured manner, to aid in the development of their skills.
How does the school encourage students to develop independent learning habits?
The school has dedicated study spaces that foster an environment conducive to independent learning. The Study Cycle is made visible, embedded, and reinforced by staff to guide students in their learning processes. Personalised support is offered to help students develop study schedules that effectively utilise their time. During study sessions, staff circulate, mentor, and facilitate a supportive atmosphere that encourages proactive engagement with their studies.
What opportunities (e.g., extracurriculars, leadership roles, Extended Project Qualification) are encouraged to strengthen university applications?
Students are provided with numerous opportunities to engage in extracurricular activities (ECAs) and super-curricular activities (activities that students engage in outside the classroom to take their academic learning beyond the curriculum). In the Sixth Form, students have the chance to lead their own ECAs. This year, the range of Sixth Form led ECAs has been impressive, encompassing activities such as teaching Spanish to Prep School students and developing softball skills with Secondary School students. Sixth Form students have led the way with their strong participation in external competitions and concerts.
Students also have the opportunity to engage in volunteer work, further enhancing their skills and community involvement. All students can undertake an Independent Project Qualification (IPQ), which is an incredibly valuable skill development opportunity that prepares them for university study. Additionally, several Year 13 students have benefited from reduced university entry requirements based on their IPQ. There are also extensive leadership roles available, including positions such as Prefects, Interns, and Wellbeing Ambassadors.
What do you see as the key priorities for the Sixth Form in the coming year?
One of my key priorities is to build a strong sense of community among the Sixth Form students, fostering an environment where collaboration and support thrive. To enhance this, we plan to further expand the Sixth Form Centre, creating tailored learning spaces and a dedicated Resource Centre designed to help students cultivate a growth mindset and facilitate their transition to university. Additionally, I am committed to providing more opportunities for students to engage in authentic experiences beyond their academic curriculum, encouraging them to explore their interests and develop essential skills that will serve them well in their future endeavours. By focusing on these priorities, I aim to create a vibrant and nurturing atmosphere that empowers students to excel both inside and outside of the classroom.
What message would you like to share with our current and future sixth form students?
To our current Sixth Form students, I have thoroughly enjoyed getting to know each of you personally and supporting you through the highs and lows of this year. I look forward to celebrating the successes of Year 13 as you approach the culmination of your hard work, and I am equally committed to guiding and supporting our Year 12 students as you navigate the university application process. To our new Sixth Form students, I eagerly anticipate welcoming you on this exciting adventure, where you will be known individually and receive the care and attention needed to thrive. Together, we will embark on a journey filled with learning, growth, and transformative experiences, and I am excited to witness the remarkable achievements that lie ahead for all of you.
We congratulate Mrs Sarah MacDonald on her well-deserved promotion and wish her every success in her new role, and the Sixth Form of LEH Foshan is set to embark on a transformative new era of academic excellence and holistic growth.
We anticipate with enthusiasm her visionary leadership as she champions innovative programs and strategic initiatives designed to elevate the academic and personal growth journey for our Sixth Form students. As she steps into this pivotal role, we warmly invite the entire school community to join us in welcoming and supporting Mrs MacDonald, whose expertise and passion promise to inspire a generation of confident, future-ready learners. Here’s to the exciting chapter ahead!
