This year, students from the International School of Nanshan Shenzhen (ISNS) proudly joined forces with peers from Nanshan Concord College of Sino-Canada (CCSC) as part of IronMaple 5516, a passionate and award-winning robotics team that competed in the 2025 FIRST Robotics Competition (FRC) season.

Together, this joint team embarked on an extraordinary journey across regional and international competitions—culminating in a spot at the FRC World Championship in Houston, USA.

A glance of the event

The team’s first stop was the FRC Pacific Regional in Vancouver on March 2, where IronMaple 5516 earned the Innovation in Control Award for excellence in robotic automation and control systems.

Just two weeks later, they competed in the FRC China Regional in Shanghai, where they were honored with the Engineering Inspiration Award—a distinction recognizing their technical excellence and global outreach, including the development of their open-source Maple-Sim software (used by over 300 teams globally) and STEM demonstrations for children in Manila, Philippines.

This prestigious award granted IronMaple 5516 direct qualification to the FRC Houston World Championship—the pinnacle of global high school robotics, with only 600 teams selected worldwide. It was the second time in team history that IronMaple advanced to the world stage, making this season a remarkable milestone.

Under the leadership of Coach Minjie Wang, with the support of returning alumni mentors and committed parent volunteers, the 30-member IronMaple team demonstrated outstanding teamwork, resilience, and innovation throughout the competition season.

Among the ISNS representatives was Grade 10 student Tweety C., who played an integral role in the team’s outreach and communications.

Reflecting on the experience, Tweety shared:

"FRC turned out to be far bigger and more intense than I had imagined. I was amazed by the scale of the competition, the collaborative spirit in the pit areas, and the chance to connect with so many incredible individuals from around the world. This journey made me more confident and inspired me to dream bigger."

Daniel L. (G11), a key member of the team, shared:

"Competing in the world championships this year in Houston was an unforgettable experience. The sounds of teams cheering, the movements of the robots, and the endless row of playing fields created an electrifying atmosphere. I hope to have the opportunity to participate in championships again, either as a team member or as a volunteer."

Inspired by their transformative experience, thethree ISNS students who participated in FRC have decided to take the next step by founding ISNS’s own Robotics Competition Club—a student-led initiative that will provide new opportunities for collaboration, innovation, and competition within the FRC framework.

To support this exciting new venture, Tweety has been awarded a USD $1,000 Service Learning Grant by ACAMIS (Association of China and Mongolia International Schools). This competitive grant recognizes students who demonstrate initiative, leadership, and a commitment to service within their school communities.

With this support, ISNS is proud to launch its FIRST Robotics Competition Club, opening the door for more students to engage in hands-on STEM learning, international teamwork, and real-world problem-solving.

We look forward to seeing the ISNS Robotics Club grow and thrive as the next generation of Phoenix engineers take flight.

We are Phoenixes. We innovate. We rise.
