Recently, the 10th Canadian International Invention Innovation Competition in Canada(iCAN 2025) concluded successfully, bringing together innovative achievements from 96 countries on this premier international stage. Doris, a student from Farragut School in Tianjin, distinguished herself among numerous entries with her original invention, “Desert Shield—An Intelligent Grass Grid Laying Machine for Desert Edges.” She secured both the Gold Award and a Special Award, adding another international accolade to China's youth innovation achievements. This accomplishment not only showcases our students' technological innovation capabilities but also serves as a vivid testament to the exchange of innovative ideas between young people from China and Canada.

As the world's premier invention competition hosted by the Toronto International Society for Innovation and Advanced Skills (TISIAS), iCAN has successfully held nine consecutive editions since its inaugural event in 2016, consistently upholding its core mission of “Integrating Global Creativity to Empower Real-World Innovation.” Marking its tenth anniversary, this year's competition introduced the “iCAN Special Award” to recognize the most groundbreaking innovations, drawing young inventors from five continents to compete fiercely on global challenges like sustainable development and ecological conservation. The judging panel, comprised of internationally renowned scientists, engineers, and industry experts, rigorously evaluated entries based on novelty, practicality, and social value. Doris's “Desert Shield” received unanimous high praise from the judges for its exceptional balance of technological innovation and ecological benefits.
Doris's Invention Design Process
Facing the daunting challenge of global desertification control, Doris's invention addresses the pain points of traditional manual grass grid installation. In China's desert fringe regions, manual installation endures extreme environmental conditions while suffering from low efficiency and high costs. The “Desert Shield” utilizes a lightweight tracked vehicle equipped with a high-precision robotic arm. This system adapts flexibly to the soft desert terrain while enabling standardized, precise installation of grass mats. It achieves a 300% increase in efficiency compared to manual labor, significantly reducing both labor costs and physical strain. This design not only reflects profound consideration for ecological conservation but also demonstrates the practical wisdom of translating classroom knowledge into solutions for real-world problems.
This project stands out for its alignment with the “innovation implementation” philosophy championed by the iCAN competition. Judges specifically noted that while maintaining technological innovation, the “Desert Shield” addresses practical application needs in desert environments. Its modular design facilitates future upgrades and iterations, offering broad industrialization prospects. This recognition validates our university's educational philosophy of “grounding innovation in real-world contexts.” Through establishing technology innovation labs and offering interdisciplinary practical courses, we encourage students to observe real-world challenges and cultivate a complete innovation mindset—from identifying needs to solving problems. The award-winning “Desert Shield” project exemplifies this approach, representing a student-led development that integrates knowledge from mechanical engineering, environmental science, and other disciplines within an ecological conservation research initiative.

Notably, this year's iCAN competition adopted an entirely online judging format for the first time, with participants from different countries showcasing their innovations via cloud platforms. During the defense session, Doris delivered a clear explanation of the technical principles and application prospects of her project. Her performance not only demonstrated solid professional expertise but also showcased exceptional international communication skills, making it a highlight moment that showcased the brilliance of Chinese youth in the competition.
