Shenzhen Luohu Huamei Foreign Language School is fully advancing the "Half-Day Weekly Program" practical courses for the first semester of the 2025-2026 academic year on the journey of quality-oriented education. This semester, we not only continue the "1234" themed practical model but also integrate the ecological exploration of "Measuring Forest Carbon Sinks with Data to Safeguard Green Homes" with the nature education of "On-site Waterfall Observation".

"MEASURING" FOREST CARBON SINKS

LET DATA BE THE CODE

FOR GREEN PROTECTION

"A big tree is like a gluttonous green giant—the stronger its body, the more carbon it devours!" When such a childlike observation comes from a student, an exploration journey about forest carbon sinks officially begins. In the practical activity of "Measuring Forest Carbon Sinks with Data to Safeguard Green Homes", students turn into "forest carbon investigators". Holding tools such as tape measures and hypsometers, they step into the lush green natural venue:

Pre-Class Warm-Up,

Unlocking the "Code" of Tools :

In class, teachers use a "tool-matching game" to help students master the standard of measuring tree diameter at breast height (DBH) – "1.3 meters above the ground" – and learn how to use hypsometers. On the pre-class worksheets, innocent words record their curiosity about "tree carbon sequestration,", as mathematical thinking and ecological awareness quietly take root.

On-Site Measurement,

Initiating a "Dialogue" with Data :

At Wutong Mountain Park, the division of labor was clear: "the measurement team circled the tree trunks, the recording team calculated the diameters, and the calculation team applied the formulas." Measuring tapes traced arcs around the tree trunks at the 1.3-meter mark, while the clicking of calculators mingled with the wind. When the conclusion that "a tree with a diameter at breast height (DBH) of 30 cm sequesters approximately the same amount of carbon annually as the carbon emitted by 3 air conditioners" was drawn, and when the contrasting data—"a Ficus microcarpa 'devours' 1,232 kg of carbon a year, while an Osmanthus fragrans 'digests' 14.397 kg"—was presented, the students widened their eyes. Their exclamations were filled with amazement at the "power of green."

ON-SITE WATERFALL

OBSERVATION

UNDERSTANDING THE MYSTERIES OF

 NATURE AMIDST MOUNTAINS AND WATERS

In Addition to Carbon Sink Exploration, Our School Also Adds an "On-Site Waterfall Observation" Nature Education Course to the "Half-Day Weekly Program" This allows students to step into the midst of mountains and waters, and experience the grandeur and magic of nature up close:

Observing Forms and Distinguishing

Qualities,Perceiving Natural Shapes :

Guided by professional teachers, students observe the flow patterns of the waterfall—whether it is the grandeur of "water plummeting straight down" or the gentleness of "layered, meandering flow." They use measuring tools to record the waterfall’s width and height, touch the texture of the surrounding rocks, observe the growth status of plants such as moss and ferns, and reflect on "the interdependent relationship between water flow, geology, and vegetation."

Listening to Sounds and Measuring Effects,

Exploring Scientific Principles

Close your eyes and listen to the roar of the waterfall crashing against rocks, and the soft rustle of water flowing through plants. During the observation, students transform textbook knowledge such as "ecological balance" and "physical changes" into tangible, perceptible real experiences.

PRACTICE

NEVER STOPS

GROWTH MOVES

TOWARD THE FUTURE

From measuring carbon sink data in the forest to exploring the mysteries of waterfalls amid mountains and waters; from the solid advancement of the "1234" model to the in-depth integration of the "Four Beauties Themes", Huamei Foreign Language School's "Half-Day Weekly Program" has always been guided by the goal of "letting students have light in their eyes, smiles on their faces, and sweat on their bodies". It turns every practical activity that takes students out of the classroom into a "living teaching material" for growth.

In the Future, We Will Continue to Enrich Practical Scenarios We will connect more disciplinary knowledge with nature and life, enabling students to understand responsibility through data and gain wisdom from nature. In this way, they will truly grow into students of the new era who possess ecological awareness, scientific thinking, and practical abilities!
