科学周| 在实验与探索中拥抱“改变与适应”
上周，哈罗横琴以“改变与适应”为主题，成功举办了校园科学周。
从潜入深海所需的氧气瓶，到遨游太空的航天服，科学不断拓展着人类的边界。在这一周里，同学们被鼓励像科学家一样思考——勇于提问，汲取新知，并在挑战中灵活调整、积极适应。
科学周在精彩的实验中拉开序幕，老师们通过生动演示点燃同学们的探索热情：
火龙卷实验：通过在火焰周围设置金属网筒并控制气流，形成旋转的火焰螺旋，呈现出旋转火柱。
鲁米诺化学发光实验：鲁米诺在碱性条件下与过氧化氢反应，于黑暗中释放出迷人的蓝色光芒。
副校长 Ms. Lowery 为同学们带来了引人入胜的实验：氧化还原反应。以锰为例，当向酸化的高锰酸钾溶液中加入过氧化氢时，溶液颜色依次由紫色变为绿色、棕色，最终呈淡粉色，代表锰从 +7 价逐步被还原为 +2 价。这些颜色变化直观地反映了电子转移过程，让学生在视觉上感受化学反应的魅力。
此外，科学老师 Mr. Rixon 通过加热酒精去除叶片中的叶绿素，并以碘液染色，清晰演示了叶片中淀粉的检测过程，同学们反响热烈。
科学老师 Mr. Rixon 与 Ms. Tang为低年级同学带来了一系列趣味实验。范德格拉夫起电机实验中，电荷传递至金属球，同学们触摸后头发逐渐竖立，静电原理以如此生动的方式呈现，引来阵阵惊叹。
随后进行的“大象牙膏”实验，将双氧水、洗洁精与酵母溶液混合，液体在化学反应中如牙膏般喷涌而出，形成酷似大象鼻子的泡沫柱，深受孩子们喜爱。
科学组组长 Mr. McAndrew 也为哈罗小狮的孩子们带来了精彩的“大象牙膏”实验。
老师还通过酸与金属反应生成氢气并点燃，直观展示了氢气的可燃性。这些实验不仅充满趣味，更在孩子们心中悄悄播下了好奇与探索的种子。
科学实验是科学教育的重要组成部分，它让抽象的理论变得可见可感，培养学生的观察、测量和分析能力，同时激发他们的探索精神，让学生学会像科学家一样思考与发现。
科学周虽已落幕，但科学的种子已在同学们心中生根发芽，期待未来继续与科学同行，以创新应变，以智慧前行。
Last week, Harrow Hengqin celebrated its annual Science Week, guided by the inspiring theme “Change and Adapt.”
From the oxygen tanks that enable deep-sea exploration to the spacesuits that protect astronauts in outer space, science continues to expand the boundaries of human capability. Throughout the week, pupils were encouraged to think like scientists — to ask questions boldly, seek new knowledge, and adapt creatively when facing challenges.
Science Week began with a series of captivating demonstrations that ignited pupils’ curiosity and enthusiasm for discovery:
Fire Tornado : A swirling column of flame formed as a metal mesh cylinder channelled airflow around a central flame — a dramatic illustration of convection and rotational air movement.
Luminol Chemiluminescence : Luminol reacted with hydrogen peroxide in an alkaline solution, glowing bright blue in the dark — a spectacular example of chemical energy transforming into light.
These thrilling demonstrations set the tone for an exciting week of exploration and discovery.
Deputy Head of Whole School, Ms Lowery, led a remarkable demonstration on redox reactions. Pupils watched as acidified potassium permanganate transitioned from purple → green → brown → pale pink, vividly showing manganese being reduced from +7 to +2 states.
Science Teacher, Mr Rixon, demonstrated how to test leaves for starch. After heating the leaves in ethanol to remove chlorophyll, staining revealed a deep green colour — clear evidence of photosynthesis. Pupils responded with great interest and enthusiasm.
Lower School pupils enjoyed a series of lively, hands-on demonstrations delivered by Mr Rixon and Ms Tang. The Van de Graaff generator proved a favourite. As electric charge accumulated on the dome and travelled into the pupils’ bodies, their hair lifted and stood on end — a delightful and memorable introduction to electrostatics.
Next came the beloved Elephant’s Toothpaste experiment. Combining hydrogen peroxide, washing-up liquid, and yeast solution produced a foamy eruption that shot upward like an elephant’s trunk, drawing gasps and cheers from the young audience.
Our youngest Harrovians were just as captivated as Mr McAndrew presented their very own version of Elephant’s Toothpaste, sparking excitement and early scientific curiosity.。
He also introduced a simple but striking acid–metal reaction, producing hydrogen gas that was then safely ignited — a vivid demonstration of hydrogen’s flammability that left a lasting impression on our pupils.
Practical experimentation remains at the heart of scientific learning. It transforms abstract ideas into meaningful experiences, helping pupils develop key skills in observation, measurement, and analysis, while nurturing a lifelong spirit of inquiry.
Although Science Week has now come to an end, the excitement and curiosity it ignited will continue to grow. We look forward to watching our pupils progress on their scientific journeys — adapting with innovation and advancing with wisdom.
