How Will You Measure Your Life, in the Era of AI?

How Will You Measure Your Life, in the Era of AI?

Observing, Disrupting, and Reorganizing

Multiculturalism: Lessons Learned from Taking Chances

As the final words of youthful wisdom lingered in the air and the teenagers' applause swelled into an unceasing wave, the TED x Tianjin Farragut School Youth Conference drew to a successful close. On November 10th, this intellectual gathering—entirely conceived and organized by our student Jinge (Angelina) and officially authorized by TED—broke through barriers to bring together academic luminaries, athletic pioneers, educational trailblazers, and rising youth talents. With sincerity that rejected empty rhetoric, six heartfelt stories brought the mission of “spreading ideas worth spreading” to fruition in the fertile soil of youth.

Hosts Angelina and Eason

Angelina received the project approval email from TED.
This conference centers on the theme of “Sparks,” embodying the faint light humanity has always pursued—it lies hidden in the resonance of cross-disciplinary dialogue, dwells within the courage to break conventions, and shines brightly in every moment of intellectual collision.

Project Planner and Organizer Angelina
A single spark can start a prairie fire. These seemingly tiny sparks need not borrow the grandeur of a blazing inferno to illuminate the unknown and connect us all. They do not rely on dazzling halos, yet grow stronger as they are passed along—evolving from a personal flash of insight into a spark that ignites others, ultimately converging into a mighty force that drives change. This grand gathering serves as a stage for these sparks to ignite and spread, where wisdom and passion from diverse fields converge and intertwine at Farragut...

Redefining Life's Purpose
How Will You Measure Your Life, in the Era of AI?

On stage, the spectrum of ideas has never been so dazzling. Gao Naisi, Vice President of Fayao Education Group, opened with the theme: How Will You Measure Your Life in the Era of AI? She drew out the core question with a memory from her time at Harvard. Ten years ago, she encountered Clayton Christensen, the father of the “Theory of Disruptive Innovation.” She learned that this business luminary never discussed profit strategies in his final lecture to graduates. Instead, she asked: “How will you measure your life?” Having witnessed countless elites trapped in misery despite their wealth, the professor hoped to awaken people to transcend conventional metrics and pursue life's true meaning. This decade-old question resonates even more profoundly amid the AI revolution.

AI is rapidly surpassing human capabilities at an astonishing pace, excelling in everything from answering questions and composing texts to creative work and medical diagnosis. Gao Naisi pinpoints the core challenge: When machines replicate top-tier human abilities, where does humanity's unique value lie? Drawing on expert insights, she offers an answer: Humanity's advantage lies in the “deep interpersonal connections” machines lack—comforting a grieving friend, collaborating with empathy, engaging in conversations where “listening to understand” is paramount. These moments of soulful connection are forever beyond the reach of algorithms. She cites Harvard's 75-year study as evidence: the quality of relationships determines happiness and health. This aligns with ancient wisdom like Buddhism and Taoism's “mutual benefit through altruism” and Wang Yangming's “unity of knowledge and action.”

Gao Naisi emphasized that in the AI era, “helping others” is no longer mere moral preaching but a core competitive advantage. She introduced the “Helping Index” tool: ask yourself daily “How many people did I genuinely help?”—even a simple “thank you” with eye contact to a delivery rider or patiently explaining a problem to a classmate—these are all practices for honing “AI-resilient competitiveness.” Closing her speech, she invoked the proverb “killing two birds with one stone” to illustrate: prioritizing human connections not only grants advantages over AI but also brings fulfillment to life. Finally, she posed a question to the young audience: “In the age of algorithms, how will you measure your life?” The answer lay in the applause—the measure of life is the number of hearts warmed.

The Harmony of Art and Responsibility
What can I do for the world?

Song Shinong, Vice Chairperson of the Nankai District Musicians Association in Tianjin and founder of “Songshi Xiaonongnong and Its Troupe,” shared her cross-disciplinary journey of pursuing dreams under the theme: What Can I Do for This World? Having started piano lessons at age three, she applied to a music conservatory for college entrance exams. After being admitted, she switched to studying psychology at Hubei University and secured a graduate school recommendation. Yet upon graduation, she resolutely pursued her musical dreams at the Royal Academy of Music in the UK. While attending a concert as a visiting scholar at Cambridge, the five-second reverberation of harmony beneath the dome cemented her mission: to nourish every soul through music. Upon returning to China, she founded a choir school serving students aged 4 to 80. In 2022, she established a teachers' choir that grew into a million-follower phenomenon through reimagined hits and live streams, igniting a nationwide choral movement.

Song Shinong's music education emphasizes character development: her children's choir cultivates independent personalities through class rules, not only clinching a world championship title but also securing full scholarships for students at prestigious universities. Her senior choir has brought elderly singers to the stage of the National Centre for the Performing Arts. From appearing on CCTV's “You Sing, I Follow” to collaborating with Disney and creating intangible cultural heritage music tours, she demonstrates that music serves as both a character-building crucible and an intergenerational bridge. Concluding her speech, she offered this message: “Find the untrodden path and walk it with conviction—success will follow.” This interpretation of social responsibility drew sustained applause.

The Power of Observation and Reconstruction
Observing, Disrupting, and Reorganizing

Cui Boran, a student from Peking University High School, ignited the curiosity of young minds with his youth research story titled “Observing, Disrupting, and Reorganizing.” He opened with the relatable topic of “love,” instantly connecting with the audience before presenting his core discovery: Some individuals struggle to fall in love, potentially due to a neurodiverse trait called “aphantasia.” This hypothesis originated from a TikTok video he stumbled upon. The video's explanation that “people with aphantasia cannot form concrete mental images” sparked a sudden thought: If love often begins with imagining a lover's smile or shared moments, might those unable to construct such images find it harder to develop affection?

He further illustrated his point using the 2021 Nobel Prize in Physiology or Medicine as an example: Scientists broke through the notion that “sensations cannot pinpoint molecules” by observing the hot and cold sensations triggered by capsaicin and menthol, thereby reshaping humanity's understanding of physical perception. He himself applied this mindset to overcome ADHD—transitioning from forcibly suppressing chaotic thoughts to observing and accepting them before organizing his direction, ultimately achieving clarity. At the conclusion of his speech, he shared his aspirations with his peers: “Observe the details others overlook, question the common knowledge everyone takes for granted, and use imagination to reconstruct cognition.” This resonated deeply with the young audience, making them realize that science need not be confined to laboratories. A spark of curiosity ignited by a TikTok video or the courage to question assumptions can become the flame that reshapes the boundaries of human understanding.
Decoding the Temperature of Technology
BCI,Not Magic:Tools that Empower
04
Cui Xiaonan, a PhD candidate specializing in Brain-Computer Interfaces at Tianjin University's School of Electrical Automation and Information Engineering, guided attendees into the world of BCI with her presentation titled “BCI, Not Magic: Tools that Empower.” She began by leading participants through a simple reaction game. When slight pauses emerged in the group's responses, she smiled and highlighted the key point: " A slightly slower reaction isn't a flaw—it's your brain building new neural pathways for ‘perceive-comprehend-act.’ That's precisely the core logic of brain-computer interfaces." She emphasized that BCI is not some sci-fi mind-reading magic, but a tool that helps humans transmit their intentions to the world more quickly and clearly. This vivid introduction gave the entire audience an initial sense of familiarity with the technology.

She broke down the technical principles using the accessible logic of “monitoring-extracting-translating,” and through her laboratory experience of “ninety-nine corrections for one breakthrough,” she revealed the true essence of scientific research: genuine innovation is never a magic trick achieved overnight, but rather the persistence of breaking down the ‘impossible’ into “trying one more time.” When she discussed the value of technology, her statement—“Brain-computer interfaces aren't about controlling thoughts, but about helping intentions reach the world faster and clearer”—drew applause from the audience. That applause carried not only reverence for technology but also a firm belief in the principle that “technology serves humanity.”
05
Cross-Cultural Growth
Multiculturalism: Lessons Learned from Taking Chances
Chris Fontana, our school's foreign teacher supervisor, shared a cross-cultural journey titled “Multiculturalism: Lessons Learned from Taking Chances,” offering a unique insight into the essence of growth.

From teaching in South Korea during his post-graduation uncertainty to settling in Tianjin with his wife, these two choices taught him that multicultural thinking is never about being a passive admirer but about embracing the courage to actively engage. He chuckles at the awkward moment when he mispronounced “eat fish” as “eat jade” due to Chinese tones. Yet it was precisely this humility in embracing discomfort that helped him grasp the essence of cross-cultural communication—every clumsy attempt is a step toward breaking out of one's comfort zone. Even more moving is how, with zero singing experience, he stepped onto a stage before a hundred people to perform the American national anthem for cultural connection. This breakthrough showed everyone: true expansion of horizons isn't about passport stamps, but the courage to say “yes” to the unfamiliar and the wisdom to find resonance amid differences.
The Legacy of the Spirit of Perseverance
Life Lessons I Learned from Volleyball
—Perseverance and Passion Will Ultimately Bloom
06

Closing the show, Tianjin Women's Volleyball Team setter Zhang Xinyue delivered the final presentation titled “Life Lessons Volleyball Taught Me: Perseverance and Passion Will Ultimately Bloom,” giving the concept of “perseverance” its most vivid embodiment. Her volleyball journey began with a serendipitous twist: at age 9, seeking to strengthen her frail health, she was unexpectedly spotted by a sports school coach and stumbled into the sport. Initially disliking it, she endured late-night training sessions piled on top of homework until developing stomach issues. Only her determination to “not abandon her teammates” carried her through the toughest phase.

Above: A photo of Zhang Xinyue when she won her first championship with the youth team.
Below: Zhang Xinyue posing with teammates during the competition
From collapsing in hypoglycemia during training camp in Zhangzhou to the ecstatic tears of victory at the Youth Games, she grew through relentless struggle and breakthroughs. As a young member of the Tianjin women's volleyball team, she admits the pressure has shifted from “fighting for” championships to ‘defending’ them, feeling like a mountain. She bluntly states, “Losing is a mandatory lesson for growth: ‘Don't lose in vain—it's tuition for growth.’” During her lowest moments, her coach's passion for tactical refinement taught her that “true passion means striving forward even after seeing every obstacle.” That resonant insight deeply impressed upon the young athletes present: behind every glory lies the relentless lifting and steadfast perseverance of day after day.

The successful hosting of this conference vividly embodies our school's educational philosophy. As the project organizer, Angelina, under the dedicated guidance of mentors including our school's co-founder Zhou Xi, Gao Naisi, Vice President of the Fayu Education Group, and Zhang from the Center for Elite Innovation Talent Development, meticulously executed every step—from conceiving the idea and securing official authorization to coordinating its implementation. Through each solid action, she ignited the spark of TED x Tianjin Farragut School Youth, ignited a wildfire of inspiration across campus. She has also made the flame of “student-led planning and the passing down of ideas” the most precious legacy within our school. This fully demonstrates the leadership, execution, and interdisciplinary practical skills our school advocates.

November 10th TEDx Tianjin Farragut School Youth Event Group Photo (Partial)
As Angelina stated in her closing remarks: "The conclusion of this conference marks only the beginning of the dissemination of ideas. " When the spirit of TED meets Farragut's educational philosophy, and when students' independent planning collides with speakers' heartfelt sharing, what we witness is not merely a gathering of speeches, but the sowing of seeds of thought—about perseverance and passion, about technology and humanity, about inclusivity and responsibility, and about the youthful inquiry: 'What can I do for the world?'

Youth blazes like flames, and ideas resonate with sound. Though the spotlight of TEDxTianjin Farragut School Youth has dimmed, the fires ignited—the flames of curiosity, awakened responsibility, and inspired action—will continue to burn and grow within Farragut's campus. We firmly believe that these young minds, nourished by the sparks of diverse ideas, will grow into the “thinkers, leaders, and changemakers of the future world.” They will carry this nourishment forward, allowing more valuable sparks of thought to resonate far and wide.
Students passionate about the TEDx Tianjin Farragut School Youth project and eager to become idea spreaders, we welcome you to join us in igniting more sparks of thought!
Sparks may be small, but their capacity to ignite something big is immeasurable.
