02

03
Homestay

Two Shores,One Sea
On November 12th, as the final farewells became a bond of care spanning the Pacific, and the ink on parting gifts still carried the warmth of youth, the three-day Sino-American cultural exchange between Center for Global Studies at Brien McMahon High School (CGS) in Norwalk, Connecticut, USA, and Farragut School (TFS) in Tianjin has drawn a warm and profound conclusion in the hearts of both schools' faculty and students. This transoceanic rendezvous, bridged by youth, shattered geographical barriers, linguistic divides, and racial boundaries. It fostered the fusion of civilizations through dynamic exchange, while the youthful enthusiasm of the participants embodied the vision of Sino-American cultural exchange, infusing the friendship between the two nations with the vitality of youth.

As China-U.S. relations enter a new phase of development, both heads of state have emphasized that youth serve as the core bond of friendship. Strengthening two-way exchanges among young people has become a shared aspiration across all sectors of both nations. The journey undertaken by CGS students across the ocean to spend days and nights alongside TFS students stands as the most vivid embodiment of this shared vision, allowing youthful passion to become a warm bridge connecting us all.

TFS Moments:
Embarking on a Journey of Creative Resonance

1
Opening Ceremony: Welcoming with courtesy, engaging with sincerity

Dr. Yang Xiaoke, Founder of TFS, delivered the address, with Michelle serving as interpreter.
On the morning of November 10, the opening ceremony was held in our university's auditorium. Drawing from his own international educational journey, Dr. Yang Xiaoke, founder of Farragut School Tianjin, emphasized that “education is the cornerstone for breaking down barriers.” He further elevated this gathering into a practical demonstration of the initiative for people-to-people exchanges by quoting the significant statement that “the future of Sino-US relations lies with the youth.” He expressed the original intent of cooperation with the words: “Those who share the same aspirations are not deterred by mountains and seas.”

Speech by CGS Principal Barbara Wood
Subsequently, CGS Principal Barbara Wood expressed gratitude for the host institution's warm hospitality, praising the immersive experience provided by host families as “empathy education that cannot be replicated in the classroom.” Participating in cultural exchange for the first time, she drew upon the ancient Chinese proverb “A journey of a thousand miles begins with a single step” to convey her admiration for Chinese culture and education, while also expressing hopes for deepening online collaboration between the two schools.

CGS student representative Maurice delivered a speech
Maurice, a student at Global High School, then delivered his thanks in slightly awkward yet heartfelt Chinese, acknowledging that two years of studying the language had made his trip to China “a dream come true.” He expressed his eagerness to forge cross-border friendships during this brief exchange.

Sophie, a student representative from TFS, delivered a speech.
Finally, Sophie, a student representative from our school, welcomed her dear friends using the metaphor of “family,” emphasizing that this gathering was a “youth dialogue transcending borders.” She expressed both the desire to understand the “American Dream” and the willingness to showcase the “authentic and diverse China,” calling for “exchanging sincerity for sincerity.” The hope that “the seeds of friendship will eventually blossom on both sides of the Pacific” made the young students' eyes shine with even greater determination. Both sides rose to greet each other, palms meeting in a heartfelt exchange that marked the perfect beginning to this transoceanic rendezvous.

The principals of both schools exchanged gifts.
2
TED Talks and Cultural Performances: Where Knowledge and Artistry Shine in Harmony
Immediately following, the TEDx Tianjin Farragut School Youth Conference concluded successfully. Centered on the theme “Sparks,” the event featured multiple speakers whose insights converged like sparks, illuminating the horizons of young minds: Gao Naishi, Vice President of Fayao Education Group; Song Shining, Vice Chairperson of the Nankai District Musicians Association in Tianjin; Cui Boren, a student from Peking University High School; Cui Xiaonan, a doctoral candidate at Tianjin University; Chris Fontana, Head of Foreign Teachers at our school; and Zhang Xinyue, setter for the Tianjin Women's Volleyball Team, took the stage. Their presentations spanned diverse topics—from the value of AI and scientific research methodologies to the spirit of athletics—illustrating the power of perseverance and passion.
During the cultural performances: Our students presented a lively ukulele performance, a graceful Xinjiang dance, and magical illusions; CGS students also delivered heartfelt performances, singing “Jasmine Flower” in their youthful yet sincere Chinese, and igniting the atmosphere with an energetic rendition of “Cha Cha Slide.” The entire audience of teachers and students applauded continuously, their eyes filled with shared appreciation and admiration. This fusion of ideas and artistry became another shining memory in the transoceanic friendship.

02
Tianjin Impressions: A Cultural Immersion Along the Riverside and Campus

1
Strolling Along the Hai River: Feeling the City's Texture
After the camp commenced, CGS students set out from our campus and walked along the rear of the Ritz-Carlton toward the Haihe River. Along the way, they absorbed the century-old charm of the surrounding area near the Five Avenues, where the early winter glistening water complemented the blend of Chinese and Western architecture lining the riverbanks. Our faculty provided a brief overview of Tianjin's urban history, transforming this short stroll into an immersive cultural experience.

2
Chinese Martial Arts Experience: The Eastern Philosophy of Combining Hardness and Softness
During the on-campus martial arts experience class, students explored Eastern philosophy through physical movement. The instructor first taught the fundamental fist salute, then led everyone in learning Tai Chi. Under demonstration and guidance, CGS students gradually mastered the rhythmic movements, experiencing the essence of “yielding to overcome force, and the interplay of emptiness and fullness” through practice, allowing Eastern wisdom to be passed on through hands-on learning.

3
Intangible Cultural Heritage Culinary Experience: Sweet Memories in Candy Art and Candied Haws
During the intangible cultural heritage culinary class, sugar painting and candied hawthorn production warmed transoceanic friendships amid sweet aromas. Our teachers demonstrated sugar painting (creating fish, dragons, and other shapes) and candied hawthorn production. With teacher assistance, CGS students enthusiastically tried their hand at creating their own pieces—their techniques may have been novice, but their spirits were high. The moment everyone bit into the sweet-and-sour candied hawthorn, smiles lit up the room, and transoceanic friendships blossomed amidst the sweet aroma.

03
Homestay Warmth: A “Home” Across the Pacific

On the evening of their first day in Tianjin, CGS students stepped into the homes of our host families, marking the beginning of a heartwarming transoceanic story woven together by the bond of “home.” Unlike the collective exchanges on campus, the homestay experience proved more intimate and enduring—from steaming home-cooked meals shared at the dinner table to cultural chats before bedtime. The sense of unfamiliarity gradually melted away amidst the warmth of everyday life, and bonds of “family” quietly took root.

The host family's thoughtfulness lies in the details, steeped in the warmth of mutual care: Ms. Lina guided Milly and Darcy through the charm of Tianjin Eye and the Five Avenues, letting the aroma of roast duck, the pungent freshness of stinky tofu, and the sweetness of cooked pear cake imprint the city's warmth on their taste buds. Ms. Emily welcomed the quiet Charlie at dusk, preparing her favorite pizza to ease any discomfort, then offering glistening candied fruit. Banquet-style noodles and steaming hotpot gradually transformed unfamiliarity into trust.

Ms. Maggie understood that food is the best bridge. She chose Xinjiang cuisine featuring chili peppers and grilled meats, perfectly matching the Mexican flavors Nicole knew well. As the family gathered to make dumplings, dough flowed through their palms while stories of home drifted with laughter. Her daughter and Nicole bonded over sports, their distance melting away through shared conversation. On the eve of Nicole's departure, Maggie's daughter cried herself to sleep, overcome with sadness. Jasper witnessed the vibrant exchange between Vinson and our students: during meals, our students initiated conversations in English, while Vinson, our American classmate, made earnest attempts to respond in Chinese. When cultural differences arose, they patiently explained, their linguistic collision brimming with curiosity and sincerity.

Ms. Mya accompanied Caitlyn, who shares her zodiac sign, on a stroll along the Haihe River at night. She recounted the history of the Liberation Bridge and selected the iconic Tianjin intangible cultural heritage craft “Niren Zhang” figurines as souvenirs on Ancient Culture Street. When she received the English art history book Caitlyn had carefully prepared, she felt a deeper appreciation for this mutual cherishing. Ms. Helen's homemade dumplings and braised pork for Julian embodied the most comforting home-cooked flavors. The nighttime Haihe River light show they admired together and the snuff bottles they touched by hand offered the most authentic local charm. These experiences left the American student genuinely moved, declaring, “I'm touched by this warmth of home.”

This warmth has always been a mutual journey. In farewell letters from American students, the words “I am part of this family” and images of embracing figures brim with reluctance to part.

The letter Milly and Darcy wrote for Ms. Lina

Chinese families also gained immensely: their children's enthusiasm for English learning was ignited, and they came to understand the profound meaning of “letting children grow independently” through observing American students' dedicated approach to sports. Those heartfelt embraces and candid conversations also taught everyone to express affection more openly. As Administrative Principal Zhou Wei remarked: From escorting students to boarding schools in the U.S. years ago to welcoming young guest Marlon at our doorstep today, this two-way cultural exchange has long transcended mere companionship. Through the concerted efforts of our team and host families, every detail radiates warmth, and each heartfelt moment becomes a precious memory spanning the Pacific.

Conclusion:Building bridges together, letting friendship span mountains and seas.

This successful transoceanic event was made possible by the concerted efforts of our university team. Months prior, the Human Resources Department and Student Development Center initiated preparations, overseeing every step from guest invitations and process finalization to meticulous detail refinement. During the event, departments seamlessly coordinated content review for speeches and performances, equipment debugging, and other critical aspects to ensure flawless execution. The cafeteria team meticulously prepared meals, balancing both Chinese and Western tastes with nutritional considerations. Security personnel maintained constant vigilance, fortifying the event's safety perimeter. The quiet dedication of the logistics and teaching teams laid a solid foundation for this exchange activity.
At the same time, we extend our heartfelt gratitude to the CGS team, including Peggy and other teachers, for their trust and collaboration. From coordinating itineraries and caring for students to facilitating cultural communication, the seamless cooperation between both teams ensured this transoceanic gathering remained warm and welcoming throughout. This gathering in the name of youth has long transcended the scope of inter-school exchange—it stands as a vivid microcosm of cultural exchange between China and the United States, a bridge of friendship built with sincerity by the younger generation, and a profound embodiment of the belief that “the future of Sino-American relations lies with the youth.” As young people from both sides of the Pacific embraced each other in acceptance and bid farewell, we grew ever more convinced: mutual understanding and affection among youth will continuously infuse Sino-American friendship with the enduring vitality of youth. May this bond, spanning mountains and seas, continue to flourish, and may the warmth of cultural exchange resonate long into the future.
