Cultural Relic Restoration: 

Making Historical Memory “Alive”

"The value of cultural relics is never the price, but the unique historical memory it carries." Zhang Xiaoyan, a cultural relic restorer and guest lecturer at Zhixing College of Dongguan Institute of Technology, combined her many years of practical experience in cultural relic restoration and used real cases to explain to the students the ingenuity and historical and cultural value behind the restoration of cultural relics.

张笑艳老师生动地讲述了“何真家族诏书”丝织品修复的故事。这件被称为“免死金牌”的文物，沉睡63年后才重见天日。为了修复它，团队寻遍全国，才找到南京一位仍在制作真金蚕丝线的老匠人。

她描述道，那金箔薄到“用手一摸就会粘在手上，只能靠吹气让它起来”。当这件承载着岭南枭雄何真传奇历史的文物，最终在何氏祠堂重新挂起时，许多年迈的后人第一次亲眼见到了祖辈的荣耀。“那一刻，”张老师说，“我感到了这个职业对历史的意义。”

Teacher Zhang vividly told the story of the restoration of silk fabrics from the "He Zhen Family Edict". This cultural relic, known as the "gold medal for immunity from death", was rediscovered after sleeping for 63 years. In order to restore it, the team searched all over the country before finding an old craftsman in Nanjing who was still making real gold silk thread.

She described that the gold foil was so thin that "it would stick to your hands when you touch it, and you could only blow on it to make it rise." When this cultural relic carrying the legendary history of Lingnan hero He Zhen was finally hung up again in the He's ancestral hall, many elderly descendants saw the glory of their ancestors for the first time. “At that moment,” Teacher Zhang said, “I felt the significance of this profession to history.”

在修复《王缜夫妻画像》时，张老师展示了如何将破损的画心一点点拼接、全色，让祖先的容颜重现光彩。东莞中学百年特藏书库的整理故事，更让同学们感受到历史就在身边。五万册泛黄的书籍里，张老师和团队不仅要完成空间消杀、手工除尘的繁琐工作，更在一页页翻阅中，发现了建筑院士何静堂早年的试卷、不同时期学校的印章，甚至民国书籍里别致的版式设计。

“每一粒灰尘下，都可能藏着一段被遗忘的历史。” 张笑艳老师的话让同学们明白，保护文物，就是保护我们共同的文化记忆与身份认同。

When restoring "Portrait of Wang Zhen and his wife", Teacher Zhang showed how to splice the damaged heart of the painting bit by bit and full color, so that the ancestors' faces can regain their brilliance. The story of organizing the century-old special collection of Dongguan Middle School makes students feel that history is around us. Among the 50,000 yellowed books, Teacher Zhang and his team not only had to complete the tedious work of space disinfection and manual dust removal, but while flipping through the pages, they discovered the early examination papers of architectural academician He Jingtang, school seals from different periods, and even unique layout designs in books from the Republic of China.

"Under every speck of dust, there may be a forgotten history hidden." Teacher Zhang's words made the students understand that protecting cultural relics means protecting our common cultural memory and identity.

Teacher Zhang Xiaoyan also introduced the tools and four major principles of cultural relic restoration to the students. She said: "Conservators are like doctors of cultural relics. They must not only cure the 'disease', but also preserve their original appearance." This reverence for history also guides students to learn to treat history with humility and protect civilization with a sense of responsibility as they grow up, allowing humanistic qualities to be deeply rooted in the reverence and inheritance of tradition.

Let Foreign Music Melodies “Move”

If the restoration of cultural relics is a dialogue with history, then Teacher Ren Lihua’s lectures lead students to listen to the sounds of the world. As a postgraduate tutor in vocal music at South China Normal University and a lyrical coloratura soprano, teacher Ren Lihua opened the door to Western classic music for her students with the title "Singing Connects You and Me - Appreciation of Foreign Classic Songs".

Professor Ren Lihua selected two major categories: art songs and opera arias, leading the audience to appreciate the charm of music in different eras and styles. In order to allow students to experience the charm of foreign vocal art from a "zero distance", teacher Ren Lihua turned the small theater into a mini concert hall and invited several young singers to assist on the spot, allowing the classic melodies to truly flow on campus.

Their performance of the classic aria " Der Hölle Rache" from Mozart's opera "The Magic Flute" vividly interpreted the thunderous anger of the Queen of the Night. The high-pitched, fast and gorgeous coloratura passages allowed students to intuitively appreciate the unique charm of vocal art in conveying strong emotions, and more deeply appreciate the artistic tension of classic works that remain vivid after hundreds of years.

When the waltz rhythm of "Lascia ch'io pianga" sounded, piano accompaniment and singing intertwined, the students seemed to see the scene of late night courtship but playful rejection; in the soothing melody of " Ich liebe dich", the loyal emotions written by Beethoven slowly flowed, and many students sang along gently. The students experienced the music culture of different countries in the moving melodies, expanding their understanding and aesthetic boundaries of world classic music.

In addition to repertoire appreciation, Professor Ren Lihua also revealed vocal techniques to the students. She gave an in-depth explanation of the application of techniques such as "qi sinking in the Dantian" in actual singing. She also shared the importance of exercises such as scales and pitch skipping in maintaining breath balance and promoting the opening of the cavity, and encouraged students who like singing to try it.
