PART THREE

Fiona Liang
PART FOUR

Fiona Liang

Fiona Liang

To date, we have released six installments of our Farragut Faculty Spotlight series, featuring outstanding teachers from subjects such as Mathematics, Physics, Economics, Biology, and Chemistry, as well as our Director of Academic Affairs. The series has garnered significant attention and inquiries from parents. Among these, many parents have expressed particular interest in our English teaching team—after all, for students planning to study abroad, language proficiency is the first essential hurdle on the path to overseas education. Today, we focus on this expectation and invite you into the educational world of Fiona Liang, a frontline English teacher at Farragut.

Teacher Profile|Fiona Liang
Bachelor of Arts in English from Nankai University, with 8 years of frontline English teaching experience. Currently serves as Head of the English Department within the Academic Division at Farragut School. Officially certified instructor for the North American Curriculum Seminar and TOEFL. Extensive experience teaching ESL for IG levels in the Commonwealth curriculum, serving as an oral examiner. Holds multiple credentials including CET-8, High School English Teacher Certification, Teaching Knowledge Test (TKT), and Catti Level 3 certification for interpretation and translation. A true “multi-skilled professional” in international English education.
PART ONE
Focus deeply on a single area
Growth and Transformation in Warm Soil

What touches me most about Farragut is the warmth that permeates its educational environment. When discussing her initial motivation for staying here, Fiona Liang's tone is particularly sincere. The leadership's thoughtful care for frontline teachers and the unreserved mutual support among colleagues fill this fertile educational ground with a profound sense of belonging. This warmth has become the foundation for her bold exploration—since joining the school, she has taught nearly every core area of the international high school English curriculum. From 10th-grade foundational English and TOEFL/IELTS preparation courses to IB ESL and senior-level university writing courses, and even the highly challenging Seminar courses for North American university applications, she has mastered it all. She has even crossed disciplines to assist in teaching environmental science, forging her “all-round teaching” expertise through sheer determination.

Compared to traditional high schools, Farragut's small class sizes allow her to gain deep insights into each student's unique traits, fostering strong teacher-student bonds through patient communication. “When teachers truly understand their students, lesson planning and teaching gain precise direction.” This mutual trust has become a vital driving force in her teaching journey.

PART TWO
Nurturing the Mind is Paramount
Let every lesson hold the seeds of growth.

Photo shows the 2022 OSSD Grade 10 group photo and the 2023 OSSD Coming-of-Age Ceremony group photo.
Fiona believes that “teaching” is never the end goal—it's ‘nurturing’ that lies at the core. “Students may not recall a specific grammar point from a lesson, but the habits cultivated and the interests ignited in the classroom will take root and blossom someday in the future.” She firmly holds that the essence of education is the transmission of ways of thinking—through systematic instructional design, students not only master vocabulary and grammar but also learn how to learn and how to think.

The photo shows Ms. Fiona Liang's chalkboard writing and her teaching style during class.
Based on the distinct characteristics of different curriculum systems, she tailored differentiated teaching strategies: For North American curricula emphasizing practical application, she designed more seminars and group presentations; For Commonwealth curricula emphasizing exam preparation, she delved deeply into past exam papers. When the IG ESL syllabus underwent major revisions last year, she led her team in refining lesson plans and organizing three specialized oral mock exams, ultimately guiding students to achieve outstanding results. For OSSD curricula emphasizing literary literacy, she guided students in deeply analyzing classic works to cultivate their text interpretation skills.

The photo shows Ms. Fiona Liang's examiner manuscript and the 2025 Farla English Department faculty group photo.
Regardless of the course, she adheres to a dual-track approach of “knowledge + skills”: outside class, she focuses on vocabulary and grammar drills to build a solid foundation; in class, she uses debates and interactive games to energize students, allowing core competencies like critical thinking and teamwork to develop naturally through practice. “Seeing students who once hesitated to speak up now living and studying independently abroad is my proudest moment.”
PART THREE
Tailoring teaching to the individual
Give every child the chance to shine

Effective teaching isn't a one-size-fits-all approach; it allows each student to progress at their own pace. When teaching students with varying foundations, Fiona developed a “precision empowerment” methodology: During class discussions, challenging questions are directed to capable students for deeper exploration, while foundational problems are reserved for those needing reinforcement. Homework and quizzes feature tiered versions, offering struggling learners extra opportunities to earn points. Rather than focusing on immediate score improvements, she prioritizes whether students genuinely put in the effort and make steady progress.

Ms. Fiona Liang and her students
This dedication has allowed her to witness countless miracles of growth. Take Ivan, the once hyperactive and mischievous student—from needing constant reminders to attend online classes, to tackling IELTS exams and graduating successfully with her by his side, he blossomed into an open-minded and courteous young man. Then there's a group of students who, starting from their cluelessness upon enrollment, achieved remarkable leaps in both English proficiency and academic attitude by the time they took university-level writing courses in Grade 12.
PART FOUR
Whole-Person Education
Open the window to the world through language

Students at international schools face dual pressures of academic advancement and language acquisition. Fiona deeply understands the importance of mental health. She closely monitors students' emotional changes and, whenever she detects psychological distress, patiently guides them to the school's “Heart Whisper Cottage” counseling center to seek professional assistance from Ms. Maggie.
Heart Whisper Cottage Counseling Room
In the practice of holistic education, she has transformed English into a bridge connecting students to the world. Over the years, she spearheaded the establishment of the school debate club, served as a judge for American-style debate competitions, and in 2024 led a team to Guangzhou to participate in the Harvard Model United Nations. “The logical exchanges in debate and the global perspective cultivated in Model UN are extensions of language education,” she explains. Through these activities, she aims to equip students not only with English proficiency but also with the ability to articulate their views clearly and analyze issues rationally in English—truly making language a tool for exploring the world.

PART FIVE
Life is education
The Wisdom of Hiking and the Cat Church in Nurturing Children

Outside of work, Fiona possesses an unexpected charm—she's both an outdoor enthusiast who conquers 15-kilometer hiking trails and a full-time cat caretaker to three feline companions. This year, she completed a 15-kilometer hike with an 800-meter elevation gain in Chifeng's Daqing Mountains. Her six-hour endurance brought deeper insights into education: “Hiking and teaching are remarkably similar—there are no shortcuts. You must take it step by step.”

The companionship of Mimi, Luna, and Big Black taught her the most crucial aspects of education: respect and empathy.
“During the 2020-2023 online teaching period, my tabby cat Luna often sat beside me at the computer during classes. Students became so familiar with her that they nicknamed her ‘Professor Luna’ and referred to me as her teaching assistant. I'd tease them, saying, ‘Professor Luna probably understands relative clauses better than you do.’”

Ms. Fiona Liang's three cats: Mimi, Luna, and Big Black
Fiona Liang shared, “I feel that raising cats has taught me—respect. Often misunderstandings stem from lack of understanding. For instance, I've come to understand what each of my kittens' actions signifies. I can recognize their needs and fulfill them. If teachers could also understand students' needs and give them sufficient respect, I believe education would be successful.”
PART SIX
Passing on the torch
Be a guiding light for others

This summer, while attending the College Board North American curriculum training in Shanghai, Fiona earned high praise from instructors for her solid professional skills and successfully implemented the challenging Seminar course at her school. “Every class, every subject, has shaped who I am today.” This growth has strengthened her conviction that persistence in doing the right thing will ultimately yield rewards.

Fiona is attending the College Board North American Curriculum Training in Shanghai.
Now serving as the head of the English department, she dedicates more of her energy to nurturing young teachers. Fully aware of the uncertainty new teachers face upon joining the profession, she generously shares lesson plans, imparts her experience, and accompanies them through lesson refinement and post-lesson reviews to help them quickly adapt to the teaching rhythm. “I deeply understand the confusion and helplessness they feel when they first join. Farragut gave me the opportunity to grow, and I want to do everything I can to help them reach their full potential.”
Conclusion:
Build Bridges of Love, Foster Growth

She never aspired to be a “perfect teacher,” but simply lived out her classroom ideals—teaching knowledge, fostering friendly communication, and allowing mistakes. Like the mountain paths she's climbed, step by step with steadfast determination; like the cat's inner thoughts she understands, bit by bit through shared empathy. At Farragut, it is precisely teachers like this, imbued with the warmth of life, who transform English from a mere “tool for studying abroad” into a “stepping stone for growth” that helps students see the world and discover a better version of themselves.
