Exploring Gongbi Painting｜A Deep Cultural and Artistic Dialogue for SAIS Middle School & High School

Today, students from the Middle School and High School of Shenzhen American International School (SAIS), led by Art Teacher Platon, visited the Shenzhen University Museum (in preparation) for a rare opportunity to learn directly from Master Li Dacheng, one of the leading figures in Chinese Gongbi painting.

This was not simply a museum visit—it was a cross-cultural and cross-era humanities lesson brought to life.

Master Li began with a fundamental question: What is Gongbi painting? He then guided students through the essential characteristics of this traditional Chinese art form:

•Meticulous Detail: Lines as the foundation, colors as the spirit—precision built through patience and observation.

•Rigorous Technique: Layered coloring and repeated washes make Gongbi one of the most structurally disciplined styles in Chinese painting.

•Profound Expression: Unlike the expressive freedom of Xieyi painting, Gongbi focuses on subtlety—using fine detail to reveal time, emotion, and cultural depth.

Students saw perseverance, technique, and cultural symbolism woven into each depiction of peacocks, landscapes, and historical narratives.

At SAIS, we believe that Cultural understanding is a core competency of true international education.

Whether through IB inquiry, American-style interdisciplinary thinking, or AP/A-Level academic pathways, cultural sensitivity and cross-cultural understanding are essential for future-ready learners.

Through today’s experience, students realized:

•Gongbi painting is not only art, but a lens into social change and cultural identity.

•Traditional art connects meaningfully with modern visual culture, media studies, and design thinking.

•A global mindset must be rooted in respect for local culture.

This excursion vividly demonstrates SAIS’s commitment to Learning Beyond the Classroom:

•Students learning directly from authentic artworks

•Engaging with the artist behind the creations

•Integrating art, humanities, history, and aesthetics into deeper academic inquiry

For our students, today’s observations and conversations will become rich material for future portfolios, research writing, AP Art studies, and humanities exploration.

走进中国工笔画｜深美中学部人文艺术探访：与李大成大师的一次深度对话

今天，深美外籍子女学校（SAIS）中学部与高中部的学生，在艺术老师 Platon 的带领下，走进深圳大学博物馆（筹），与中国工笔画大师 李大成 进行了一次难得的面对面学习。

这不仅是一场观展，更是一堂跨越文化与时代的人文艺术课。

李大成老师从“什么是工笔画”谈起，为学生们解析了这种中国经典绘画形式的核心特征：

•极致细节：以线为骨，以色为魂，以耐心和观察力塑造真实。

•技法严谨：工笔画要求分层设色、反复晕染，是中国绘画中最具结构性的体系之一。

•表达深远：不同于写意画的“意到为先”，工笔更强调“见微知著”，在细腻中呈现时代、情感与文化的深度。

学生们在一幅幅孔雀、山水与历史人物中，看见了传统技法背后的坚持与精神。

在深美（SAIS），我们一直强调：理解文化，是国际教育的核心能力之一。

无论是 IB 的探究、美国通识的跨学科视角，还是 AP/A-Level 的学术路径，文化敏感度与跨文化理解都是未来世界的关键能力。

今天的学习让学生们意识到：
