Over the past weeks,BMH hosted three Curriculum Coffee Afternoons, Phonics, Guided Reading, and Talk for Writing, giving parents a closer look at how our structured literacy programme supports steady, meaningful progress from PreK to P1 (UK).
Each session highlighted how our consistent approach, clear progression pathways, and strong home–school partnership enable every child to thrive.
Foundations for
Reading and Writing
At BMH, our systematic Twinkl Phonics programme gives children the skills they need to become confident readers and writers. Phonics lessons are structured to build sound knowledge, letter recognition, spelling, fluency, and comprehension in a step-by-step way:
develop early phonics skills through daily in-class learning
participate in differentiated or streamed sessions that ensure teaching is responsive and targeted to each student’s individual needs
Ongoing assessments allow teachers to identify gaps and adapt lessons so every child makes steady progress. Our Phonics Rewards System motivates K2 and K3 learners, encouraging them to practise and consolidate skills through stamps and badges.
This consistent approach, combined with simple home strategies, like practising sounds and building CVC/CVCC words, supports rapid growth in both reading and writing.
Developing Fluent,
Independent Readers
At BMH, guided reading lessons give children the opportunity to read confidently and develop comprehension skills through small-group, targeted instruction:
strengthen listening, vocabulary, sequencing, and comprehension through shared reading and cross-curricular story connections
begins guided reading in Term 2 after assessments
In small groups, guided reading helps children practice the phonics skills they learnt and gain understanding of more vocabularies and sentences.
Texts are selected just above each child’s independent level, and teaching is tailored to ensure every student is supported according to their individual needs.
Combined with our Radical Readers Wall, certificates, and encouragement to read daily at home, this approach helps BMH children become confident, fluent readers who can tackle increasingly challenging texts.
Growing as Confident
Speakers and Writers
At BMH, our Talk for Writing programme develops confident communicators and writers through a structured four-stage approach: hook, imitation, innovation, and invention. Lessons are designed to build skills progressively:
Playful story exploration with props, songs, and actions
Early innovation with supported changes to characters, settings, or events
Clearer sequencing, simple sentences, and growing independence in oral language
Richer language use and the ability to create structured stories
Confident and independent writing in different genres with a clear structure and expressive language
Model texts connect with Inquiry and other learning areas, helping children apply storytelling and writing skills across the curriculum. Simple home strategies, retelling stories with actions, drawing story events, making up stories during play, and encouraging mark-making, support children in consolidating their learning.
Through structured lessons, clear progression, and strong home–school partnership, BMH children continue growing as confident speakers and writers, becoming independent and enthusiastic learners in reading and writing.
BMH Pre School’s English program is designed to help children grow from first sounds to confident communication. Our three core strands work together in a clear, step-by-step way to build a strong foundation in English.
We enjoyed sharing more about this approach during our recent coffee meetings, and we hope it gave you a clearer picture of how each day in the classroom supports your child’s progress.
Thank you to everyone who joined—we look forward to seeing you again soon.
