 What is “distance”?

Is it just a noun in a textbook?

A splash of color on a map?

Or an untested fragment of imagination?

Five years ago, the UK Track of Vanke Meisha Academy launched an online cultural exchange program. Every semester, during a fixed time slot, students connect online with teachers and peers from Nazarbayev Intellectual Schools (NIS) in Kazakhstan.

On both sides of the screen,

there lies a simple yet sincere hope:

To let students see a diverse world

 through genuine conversations.

Though the two schools uphold similar academic standards, these standards are rooted in distinct cultural contexts, community backgrounds and ways of thinking. That is precisely why the true value of this online interaction does not lie in “comparison”, but in understanding and learning from differences themselves.

PART 01

No one knew what to expect

 before the very first conversaation.

“I didn’t know much about Kazakhstan before—just that it’s our neighboring country,”said Deuce prior to the online interaction.

Isabella had a slightly more specific impression:“Grasslands, deserts, nomadic peoples, and natural landscapes similar to those in Xinjiang.”

Meanwhile, on the other side of the screen, NIS students were equally curious about their peers from this coastal city in southern China. Language, appearances, festivals, daily routines...Every topic felt both unfamiliar and refreshing.

The dialogue did not begin with lofty discussions about “culture”; instead, it started with the most ordinary questions:

What is your school like? How is your daily class schedule arranged? What do you do after school?

True understanding often quietly takes root in these seemingly trivial shares.

PART 02

 From traditional Chinese festivals to

 the most tongue-twisting Kazakh words

From traditional Chinese festivals to the most tongue-twisting Kazakh words, students’ conversations have grown more natural and in-depth over this year’s exchange. They talked about how their respective courses and clubs operate;they shared thoughts on university major choices and future career paths;they discussed how Nowruz is celebrated in Kazakhstan;and they exchanged stories about the Chinese Spring Festival tradition of families gathering for a reunion dinner.

On one side of the screen, NIS students showcased the longest and most difficult-to-pronounce words in the Kazakh language;on the other side, VMA students talked about the SSR reading time on campus. Surprising discoveries popped up one after another.

“I thought they only learned Kazakh, but it turns out Russian is also a compulsory subject—because it opens up more job opportunities.”

“When we talked about sports, I found out they also have school teams and inter-school competitions. It turns out our activities are so similar!”

At that moment, many students realized:The world is not as distant as they had imagined. They saw that peers, whether living on grasslands or by the coast, all worry about the future, feel confused about choices, and strive for their dreams. This is a kind of resonance, a feeling of being truly connected to the world.

PART 03

 The connection does not end

 when the online interaction concludes.

After this year’s session, a teacher from NIS shared this feedback: “Students from our two schools are building sincere friendships. This exchange continues the successful cooperation we’ve maintained over the past five years.”

In their view, students introduced themselves and shared campus stories in a relaxed atmosphere, gradually learning to listen and respond thoughtfully. Over the past five years, teachers from both schools have jointly guarded an unspoken bond across the screen: Stay open, stay curious, and stay respectful of the world.

PART 04

Cultural understanding is never just a slogan

After the exchange, Isabella wrote: “Language allows us to express and share, but what truly helped me understand another culture is empathy. It teaches me more about a country than any news report ever could.”

Deuce, on the other hand, discovered: I realized that everyone actually values education and future career development a great deal. When it comes to choosing majors and jobs, we all face similar considerations and pressures.”

Teachers also witnessed remarkable changes in their students: After each cross-border conversation, students have become more willing to speak up and step out of their comfort zones. They have come to realize that culture is not a label; it is made up of real people and real lives. This is an ability far more precious than language itself.

PART 05

Before truly stepping into the world,

learn first how to understand it.

Before truly stepping into the world, learn first how to understand it. This is the true meaning of multicultural exchange:It fosters open-mindedness, genuine empathy, and a global perspective. These abilities will accompany students as they journey further in life.

They are becoming “cultural translators”. Before stepping into the world for real, they first learn how to understand it.
