This post is an extract from the wonderful article written by our student Year 12 student, Mika, capturing the spirit and details of this meaningful journey. Thank you, Mika, for taking the time to write this beautiful piece and for also photographing the trip so thoughtfully.
In the rural villages of Conghua, Guangzhou, there is a group of "left-behind children." Their parents often commute between urban and rural areas, leaving the children's worlds filled with screens and unstructured time. In late November, student volunteers from the LEH Foshan Service ECA, with hearts full of compassion and carefully planned activities, visited the community supported by the "Shining Star" charity, bringing warmth, companionship, and inspiration to the children there.
Joyful Moments
Prepared with Care
On the first day, volunteers quickly bonded with the children through icebreaker games. Laughter filled the air during games like "Simon Says" and "Musical Chairs." The students showed remarkable creativity and adaptability, inventing new games on the spot when the children's interest waned. Bracelet-making became an unexpected favourite activity. The children were completely engrossed, weaving English names thoughtfully crafted by the volunteers into their designs. Trust was built through this collaboration.
As student volunteer Carolina observed,
People may think they lack compassion due to their 'wild' behaviour, but they are actually very considerate and kind.
The second day focused on English learning and creative expression. Guided patiently by the volunteers, the children made Christmas cards and learned to write about their hobbies in English. Their speed and potential for learning were impressive. A timed challenge to build the tallest tower using only paper and tape brought teamwork and friendly competition to a new level.
Student volunteer Angie shared,
I decided to come on this trip because I wanted to help the children learn new things, have new experiences, and I wanted to make memorable memories.
Deeper Connections
and Lasting Impact
This journey was more than just organizing activities; it was an exchange of hearts. Ms Summer, founder of the charity, noted that the LEH students were "patient and encouraging" and "inspire them to learn and practice English." At parting, children signed their names on gifted T-shirts, promising to meet again. One interviewed child said she really enjoyed having fun with the students and hoped they could visit more often to teach English classes.
The service trip also prompted deep reflection among the students. Angie reflected,
After this trip, I felt a sense of gratitude... It has made me realize that I should be grateful for the things that I have because the things I take for granted can be a luxury for many people.
"Shining Star" was founded by a group of university students who had received scholarships themselves, firmly believing that "everyone has the ability to help others." They are dedicated to ensuring every child in the countryside has a rich and colourful school life. As Summer says, "Every child is a shining star. Everyone is a shining star." In rural areas with limited resources, this companionship and guidance is especially precious.
The long-term partnership between LEH Foshan and Shining Star provides students with a valuable platform to take on leadership roles and give back to the community, while sowing seeds of light and hope in the children's hearts. This mutual growth makes every encounter meaningful.
