Dear teachers and students:
Good morning. Welcome back. I hope you all had a restful and restorative break. As we gather here for this opening ceremony, I want to be direct with you about the road ahead. This is going to be an incredibly short and intense semester.
For our Form 6 students, the reality is harsh. We are just one month away from the HKDSE exams. One month. Before that, you will be facing a full-scale mock exam. This isn't just another test; it is your final dress rehearsal. It is your last, best chance to identify your weak spots, to refine your technique, and to build the stamina you'll need for the real thing. Treat it as such. Let it be the wake-up call that pushes you into your final, focused preparation.
For those of you taking International GCSEs and A-levels, the timeline is equally pressing. We are only two months away from those exams. Many of your courses are still ongoing, which means your preparation for the exams will have to happen alongside learning new material. We do not have the luxury of a long, dedicated revision period. Time is our most limited resource right now, and we must use every second wisely.
Yes, it is a daunting schedule. The pressure is on, and the finish line feels like it's approaching at full speed.
But amidst this busy and stressful time, we have something important to celebrate. Something that shows us exactly what is possible with hard work and dedication.
We have just received our results from the January IAL examinations. For some of our A2 students, these results mark the completion of their entire A-level journey. And they have done us incredibly proud.
I want to give a special mention to Zoey from the A2 class. Zoey has already finished all of her exams and has achieved an outstanding set of results: 3 A* and 1 A. The best in our school’s history. We all watched her receive her cash prize just moments ago, and that applause was well-deserved. Zoey’s success is not just a personal triumph; it is a beacon for our entire school community. It proves that excellence is achievable right here, by one of your own peers. I also like commend AS student Andy, he also scored all A’s in his international exams.
Let Zoey and Andy’s achievement be an inspiration to every single one of you. Whether you are facing the HKDSE in a month or the IGCSEs and IALs in following on, know that you are capable of excellence too. It requires focus, it requires sacrifice, and it requires making the most of every single day we have left this semester.
The timetable is full, the deadlines are close, but the potential within this room is immense.
Let's get to work. Let's make these next few weeks count. And let's wish all our candidates—from Form 6 to our IGCSE and IAL students—the very best of luck in your upcoming exams.
Thank you.

Good morning, everyone!
Today I want to talk about mental drain. It's not physical tiredness. It's a silent war in our mind that steals our energy and makes us doubt ourselves.
I'll share this speech in four parts: Understand, Trace, Break Free, and Manage.
First, part one: Understanding.
So, what is mental drain? It's the inner conflict when our thoughts, feelings, and actions don't match.
Here are some signs:
One, overthinking every small decision.
Two, always comparing yourself with others.
And three, feeling tired without doing much.
Now, part two: Tracing the Roots.
So why does this happen? There are four main reasons:
First, perfectionism. We want everything to be perfect, but life isn't.
Second, high sensitivity. We care too much about others' opinions.
Third, overthinking. We think too much and act too little.
And fourth, fear of failure. We avoid trying for fear of doing badly.
Now, part three: Breaking Free.
The good news is mental drain is beatable. Here are four ways:
First, accept imperfection. "Good enough" is better than "perfect but never done."
Second, separate tasks. Focus on your own responsibilities. What others think is their problem.
Third, set an action threshold. Think for ten minutes, then take the first step.
And fourth, reduce over-reflection. Ask yourself "Did I do well?" once, then move on.
Next, part four: Energy Management.
We also need long-term strategies:
First, emotional management. Release feelings by writing, talking, or exercising.
Second, growth mindset. Say "I learned something" instead of "I failed."
And third, build a support system. Share your struggles with friends.
Finally, let's conclude.
Mental drain is a thief, but we can fight back.
So next time you're stuck in endless thinking, remember: stop the inner war, take a small step, and move forward.
Life is too short to waste on self-consumption. Let's say no to mental drain, and yes to a more energetic life.
Thank you!

From the US-Iran Conflict to Economic Impact
Good morning, respected principal, fellow teachers, and most importantly, my wonderful students:
Today, as an economics teacher representing the faculty, I am delighted to stand here and welcome you all to the brand‑new academic semester. My topic today is: From the US-Iran Conflict to Economic Impact. Whether you're studying A-Level or DSE Economics, you've chosen a subject that's not just about graphs and theories—it's the ultimate real-world subject. Today, let's see how war connects to what we'll study this year.
Topic 1: Globalisation
When the conflict started, Iran closed the Strait of Hormuz. This strait is a vital transport link between Asia, Europe, and the rest of the world. It's one of the most important routes for oil transportation—about one-third of the world's sea-traded oil passes through here. Closing it seriously disrupts global trade.
What drives globalisation? Political factors, economic factors, and technology. War shows us the negative side of politics—it damages economic development and slows down globalisation.
Topic 2: Poverty and Inequality
Before the war, many middle-class Iranians had decent lives. But when war came, homes were destroyed. People lost access to clean water and electricity. Healthcare and education systems collapsed. Basic needs couldn't be met.
The Human Development Index (HDI), which measures quality of life, drops quickly. A country like this can fall into poverty. Inequality—measured by the Gini coefficient—gets worse.
Behind these numbers are real people. Every statistic hides pain and loss.
Topic 3: Comparative advantage & trade pattern
Iran used to have a huge comparative advantage in oil. Oil exports were its specialty, creating a trade surplus (export revenue > import expenditure). But war changes everything.
Oil production stops. The industry itself may be targeted and attached. Imports become difficult because transport routes are blocked. Imported goods cost more. The country may fall into a trade deficit (import expnediture > export revenue). An already struggling economy moves closer to collapse.
Topic 4: Exchange Rates
Even before the war, Iran had high inflation—often over 50%. Inflation affects exchange rates, so the Iranian currency was already weak.
Now with war? It's worth even less. The currency could lose value overnight—sometimes dropping 10 times in a single day.
What does this mean? The country faces a huge shortage of foreign currency. It can't afford essential imports. The economy will collapse further.
The government might try contractionary monetary policy to save the currency—making it more valuable—but that reduces total output. Either way, economic growth suffers.
As your teachers, our goal isn't just to help you achieve top grades. Our goal is to help you build a toolkit—analytical thinking and economic insight—that you'll carry long after you leave this school, to navigate the uncertainties and opportunities of your future.
Let's make this semester one of curiosity, critical thinking, and connection to the real world.
Thank you, and have a wonderful term ahead!

Aspire and Act
——Flag-raising Ceremony Speech by the Principal
Week 2, Spring Semester 2026
Good morning, respected teachers and dear students!
As the first rays of sunlight of the new semester grace our campus, we gather once again, filled with anticipation and hope for the future. As students of the International Department, we stand not only at the starting point of our personal growth but also amidst the waves of global transformation.
When Yushu robots are no longer performing folk dances but practising martial arts alongside a large group of real people; when the United States moves beyond proxy wars and intervenes directly in the Middle East; when the Communication University of China cuts 16 undergraduate programmes at once, with its president stating that the era of human-machine division of labour has arrived – dear students, standing at the beginning of 2026, what thoughts come to your mind?
Today, I want to share three key phrases with you: "See the World," "Root in Yourself," and "Create Possibilities."
1. See the World: Stay Clear-Headed and Reflective Amidst Change
Over the past year, we have witnessed much "uncertainty": the smoke of the Russia-Ukraine conflict, the trauma of the Israeli-Palestinian conflict, the challenges of a slowing global economy, and the disruption of traditional industries by AI technology... These seemingly distant news stories are, in fact, closely related to our future.
As students in the International Department, we must not only focus on "what happened" but also ask "why it happened" and "how to solve it." For instance, when we see the European energy crisis, can we think about "the global layout of renewable energy"? When we discuss US-China tech competition, can we question "how to prevent technological decoupling from harming human well-being"?
Action Suggestions:
Spend 15 minutes daily reading international news (e.g., BBC, UN News, China Daily English edition), comparing reports from different perspectives.
Participate in activities like Model United Nations or World Youth Forums to understand the complexity of conflicts through "role-playing."
Pay attention to fields like "Global Governance" or "International Politics," using academic frameworks to deconstruct real-world problems.
2. Root in Yourself: Uphold Culture and Values Amidst Diversity
Globalisation connects us closely with the world, but it also brings a challenge: how to avoid losing ourselves while absorbing diverse cultures?
At last year's "Sports and Technology Festival," when we saw students from Turkmenistan perform their traditional ethnic dances during the opening ceremony while displaying both their national flag and the Chinese flag, I thought to myself: True cultural confidence is not about "excluding others," but about "telling our own story well in a language the world understands."
In the new semester, I hope we can both boldly embrace differences (e.g., try researching a small country, join a cross-cultural club) and deeply cultivate our local culture (e.g., study the intangible cultural heritage of our hometowns, use short videos to show Chinese solar terms to friends overseas).
Action Suggestions:
Join a club and plan an exhibition on "Traditional Art × Modern Technology."
Regularly communicate with alumni already studying abroad, replacing "abstract labels" with "specific stories."
Actively integrate Chinese perspectives into application essays or class presentations (e.g., when discussing climate change, cite the example of "mural preservation at the Mogao Caves in Dunhuang").
3. Create Possibilities: Respond to the Call of Our Time Through Action
Facing challenges like global warming, AI ethics, and the wealth gap, some choose anxiety, while others choose action. And I believe: every attempt by young people is a vote for the future.
Last year, some students from international schools were shortlisted for the "Global Youth Climate Action Award" thanks to their project "Using AI to Monitor Marine Plastic Pollution." Other students initiated a "Used Textbook Recycling Program," reducing paper waste by 2,000 kilograms in one year. These actions may seem small, but they show us: Changing the world doesn't require waiting until we "grow up"; it only requires starting "now."
This new semester, we can begin with these things:
Participate in campus environmental protection projects.
Join technology clubs to explore the application of AI in fields like medicine and education.
Contact alumni or friends of parents to conduct a "career interview" (e.g., "What's it like being a renewable energy engineer in Africa?").
Conclusion: Be Actors "Rooted in China, Facing the World"
Dear students, we are born in an era full of challenges, but even more so, in an era full of possibilities. When we talk about "international perspective," it should not merely be a springboard for "studying abroad," but a responsibility to "understand global issues and contribute Chinese solutions."
The bell for the new semester has rung. May we both "look up at the world" and "humbly cultivate ourselves"; may we both "debate peace in Model United Nations" and "spread warmth through community service." Because true "global citizens" are never "bystanders," but "builders."
Finally, I leave you with this: "The future belongs to those who prepare for it today." Let us respond to the times with action, and pay tribute to our youth through growth!
Thank you all!

• 每天花15分钟阅读国际新闻(比如BBC、联合国新闻、中国日报英文版),对比不同视角的报道;
• 参与模拟联合国、世界青年峰会等活动,在“角色扮演”中理解冲突的复杂性;
• 加入社团,策划一场“传统艺术×现代科技”的展览;
• 与已经在海外的学长定期交流,用“具体故事”替代“抽象标签”;
• 参与校园环保项目;
• 加入科技社团,探索AI在医疗、教育领域的应用;
最后,送给大家一句话:“The future belongs to those who prepare for it today.”(未来属于今天为之准备的人。)
