Belle

Nomy

Felix

When a turnip "taller than a person" appeared in the classroom, the children immediately gathered round, their chatter rising and falling in waves.

Belle

Could we possibly eat this whole turnip?

Nomy

If the whole class ate together, we probably could, couldn't we?

Felix

How many people would it take to pull up a turnip this big?

At the start of the new term, the Pine Tree Class launched an immersive, cross-disciplinary learning project centred around the classic picture book The Giant Turnip. This course deeply embodies the ECSTEM and IEYC international curriculum philosophies, grounded in the EYFS early years framework. It weaves together scientific inquiry, artistic expression, language development and social interaction around the core themes of “unity” and “growth”. Let us revisit the learning journey to witness how the children embarked upon a comprehensive developmental progression, all stemming from a single turnip.

01

ECSTEM Programme: Scientific Inquiry into the Mysteries of All Living Growth

What is the secret code of plant growth?

In the ECSTEM inquiry module, children transform into budding plant researchers, embarking on a scientific journey to uncover the ‘plant life cycle’. By observing seed germination, the unfurling of young leaves, and the development of mature plant forms, the children intuitively deduce the essential conditions for plant growth: water, air, soil, and sunlight.

The programme then extends to the outdoor vegetable garden, where children treat nature as their laboratory. Crouching to examine leaf vein patterns and touching the texture of petals, they complete the transition from theory to tangible perception within a real-world setting, capturing the rhythms of growth with their very eyes.

02

ECSTEM Programme: Scientific Inquiry into the Mysteries of All Living Growth

When the old gentleman found himself in a predicament, unable to pull out the turnip, the children launched a creative rescue mission.

In the art workshop, young learners employed diverse media for artistic expression. Through radish printing and colour rendering, they transformed the story's scenes into dynamic ‘vegetable harvest’ compositions. This artistic activity served not only as aesthetic training but also as a process of visual reconstruction and narrative expression, breathing vibrant life into the static picture book through their fingertips.

03

IEYC Curriculum · Communication and Language Domain: Story Theatre, Nurturing Linguistic Competence

"Who'll play the old gentleman? Who fancies being that mischievous little mouse?"

Story theatre provides an ideal environment for language acquisition. Through role-play and scenario reenactment, young learners grasp narrative logic and character sequencing by imitating distinct voices and intonations. Complemented by cognitive activities like ‘Carrot Story Sequencing,’ children advance their understanding of narrative structure and oral expression through play. From listeners to storytellers, core linguistic competencies take root in every interactive exchange.

04

IEYC Curriculum · Personal, Social and Emotional Development: Collaborative Experiences, the Starting Point for Social Development

"I can't pull it out on my own, who will help me?"

This call for assistance in the story reflects a key need in young children's social development. Aligned with EYFS social-emotional learning objectives, the curriculum features structured cooperative games such as "Team Carrot-Pulling" and "Relay Helpers". Through authentic interaction and collaborative play, children deeply experience and internalise the essence of "teamwork": recognising the limitations of individual effort while appreciating the power of collective cooperation. This foundational social skill begins with a simple phrase:"Do you need a hand?"

05

Forest Curriculum · Understanding the World Domain: Life Education, Miracles Wrought by Time

The Giant Turnip is not merely the growth of a plant, but an education in the resilience of life.

Capitalising on Arbor Day, the programme elevates nature observation into life education. Young learners grasp how a seed's transformation from minuscule seedling to towering giant relies on sunlight, rain nourishment, and human patience. The essence of life education lies in recognising that growth never happens overnight: with dedicated care, even the smallest seedling will eventually break through the soil and grow into a mighty tree. This fosters not only reverence for nature but also profound understanding of growth's inherent rhythms.

A giant turnip weaves together an interdisciplinary journey of growth and exploration, and embeds the core of "unity" and "growth" deeply in the children's hearts. On this immersive learning journey, curiosity for science, artistic creativity, linguistic expression, the warmth of cooperation and reverence for life all become the nourishment for the children's growth. The exploration ignited by this turnip never stops; the beauty and strength gained from these experiences will ultimately be the children's confidence to forge ahead, empowering them to carry their love for the world and courage to explore, pull up their own "giant turnips" in the field of life, and unlock boundless possibilities for growth.
