Daniel
Daniel

Daniel

Daniel

Daniel
Home school

Daniel

Eileen

Daniel

Breaking with Tradition:
Why is this “Boundless University” harder to get into than an Ivy League school?

Minerva University is an innovative private university headquartered in San Francisco. Guided by the core philosophy that “the world is the campus,” it has an undergraduate enrollment of just 603 students and an acceptance rate of only 4% (it once held the top spot on Niche’s list of hardest-to-get-into colleges with an acceptance rate of 1%). It consistently ranks among the top three most selective undergraduate programs in the U.S., with admission standards higher than those of Harvard, Yale, Princeton, and MIT.

Its uniqueness is deeply ingrained in its educational model. At its core lies “global immersive learning,” which spans seven global cities: San Francisco, Seoul, Hyderabad, Berlin, Buenos Aires, London, and Taipei. Over the course of their four-year undergraduate program, students will deeply integrate into these communities as residents—rather than merely touring them as tourists—and through independent living and immersive experiences, they will transform each city into both a classroom and a practical learning environment; Rejecting traditional rote learning, the university adopts a project-based learning model. Free from the constraints of fixed classrooms, this approach deeply integrates the acquisition of knowledge with the resolution of real-world problems.

Minerva Student Orientation: Community Sign (Group Signing)
As Minerva professor Alexis Diamond puts it, the classrooms here are more like a “gym,” where students exercise their minds just as they would their bodies, honing their critical thinking and complex problem-solving skills through “Socratic” interactive seminars. What is even more noteworthy is that Minerva collaborates closely with top global organizations such as Apple, McKinsey, and the Gates Foundation. Ninety-seven percent of students secure high-quality internships before graduation, paving a golden path for their future careers.

What makes Minerva particularly unique is that its admissions system breaks free from the constraints of standardized test scores. Centered around a proprietary evaluation framework, it goes beyond mere test scores to prioritize competencies—critical thinking, cross-cultural adaptability, and the ability to solve complex problems—as the core criteria for selecting students. This selection philosophy ensures that Minerva seeks out “future leaders” who are not content with traditional paths and possess independent thinking and a global perspective.
Mutual compatibility:
His diverse background has made him Minerva's “chosen one”
02
PART

Daniel
Daniel and Minerva’s meeting was an inevitable “mutual connection.”

Daniel, a sailing enthusiast
As a student with a diverse educational background, Daniel’s journey has long been marked by a commitment to “adapting to change and taking the initiative to explore”: he attended junior high school in Malaysia, was homeschooled after returning to China, and joined TFS in his sophomore year. These experiences have honed his exceptional self-motivation and ability to adapt to new environments, and have fostered a natural affinity for the concept of “boundless learning.”

Daniel Skiing
“Minerva’s ‘Global Rotation’ isn’t just a study abroad program—it’s an immersive learning experience,” Daniel said. “I’m not particularly picky when it comes to daily life, so being able to visit so many places has given me a truly global perspective. ”During the application season, a college counselor recommended Minerva University to Daniel. When discussing it with his parents, they recalled news reports about Kai-Fu Lee’s daughter attending the school. After the family conducted thorough research, they concluded that its philosophy—which “rejects traditional lectures in favor of discussion and self-directed learning to build skills”—aligned perfectly with their own learning style. “With knowledge readily available today, this model can significantly improve learning efficiency.”

Daniel in Sailing
His homeschooling experience gave him a strong sense of self-motivation and the ability to learn independently, allowing him to adapt seamlessly to Minerva’s online teaching model. “During that time, I learned to plan my own schedule and developed a strong sense of self-motivation, which helped me adapt well to online classes and independent study.”

Daniel participated in the 2022 Meisha Education National Youth Sailing League
TFS’s respect for students’ individuality and its encouragement of a spirit of inquiry further nurtured this self-motivation. The school’s support for his initiative to launch a sailing club aligns perfectly with Minerva’s philosophy of “cultivating thoughtful and ambitious students,” allowing him to clearly highlight his core strengths in his application.

Actual Answer:
Seeing Problem-Solving Skills in Life’s Challenges
03
PART
Minerva’s application process is highly challenging; instead of relying on traditional standardized tests, it assesses students’ true abilities through six “challenge tests.” One question in particular left a deep impression on Daniel:
“Question: You went out to dinner with two roommates, and one of them covered the high bill. The other two have yet to repay him, and he urgently needs the money to pay his tuition. How should you handle this situation appropriately? ” This question has no standard answer; its purpose is to assess students’ problem-solving abilities in real-life situations. Daniel’s response was rational and thorough: first, apply for financial aid from the school while using his computer programming skills to take on part-time work; next, communicate with the financially well-off roommate to help cover part of the cost; finally, have an honest conversation with the financially struggling roommate, encouraging them to repay what they can and explore multiple avenues to raise tuition funds.

“These types of questions are rooted in real-life situations and don’t have a single correct answer; what matters most is whether you can effectively solve the problem,” Daniel said. This practical, adaptable way of thinking is precisely the core competency that Minerva values most.

Daniel and Eileen, the college counselor
Throughout the application process, our college counseling team provided Daniel with crucial support. In the face of external skepticism, the counselors consistently encouraged him, helped him organize his thoughts, and supported him in staying focused on his goals and direction. It was precisely this professional guidance that allowed Daniel to transform his diverse life experiences into a standout strength in his application, ultimately helping him stand out from the crowd.
Journey to the Mountains and Seas:
Writing the next chapter of the future in the classroom of the world
04
PART
Now, Daniel is about to embark on Minerva’s “Four Years, Seven Cities” journey across the globe. He is full of anticipation for the future: “I’m really looking forward to experiencing the unique cultures of different countries, and I hope to take full advantage of the various learning and practical opportunities Minerva offers, as well as make friends from all over the world.”

Daniel’s achievements vividly embody Faragut’s founding educational philosophy—the school not only helps students gain admission to Ivy League and other top-tier universities, but is also committed to providing a broad platform for every student who is passionate and seeks well-rounded development to realize their full potential. Faragut’s educational philosophy of “respecting individuality and empowering growth” aligns perfectly with Minerva’s goal of “cultivating global leaders capable of solving real-world problems,” paving a boundless path for Daniel to explore the world and achieve his full potential.

Daniel
With dreams as our steed, let us make the most of our youth; with the world as our classroom, the future holds great promise. Congratulations to Daniel! May he maintain his passion and persevere throughout Minerva’s “Four Years, Seven Cities” learning journey, broadening his horizons and honing his skills in the global classroom, and growing into a young person of the new era who possesses both a global perspective and core competencies. May every TFS student, like him, stay true to their original aspirations, explore with courage, achieve their dreams on their own path, and set out to conquer the world!
