As the melodious voices of children echoed in the Foshan ASJ campus, the second "Cantonese Market" of the primary div also opened with excitement.

Lingnan culture is hidden in the fireworks of the city and integrated into daily discourse, fresh and vivid. As an important carrier of Lingnan culture, Cantonese is also the core of our school’s “biliteracy and trilingual” education features. With the theme of "Cantonese Grand Tea House, Cantonese Melody Returns to Taste", this market has carefully set up eight unique stalls, allowing teachers and students to listen in immersive participation, speak in interesting interactions, and get closer to Cantonese step by step, as well as the profound cultural context behind it.

Vivian, a Cantonese language teacher, said, "Although the theme is centered on teahouses, the activities of the market are not limited to food culture, but also incorporate various elements such as traditional folk customs, language characteristics, and life games. We hope that through these experiences, students will feel that Cantonese is not only a language, but also a cultural carrier closely connected with folk culture, emotional expression, and lifestyle, thereby enhancing their interest in and identification with Lingnan culture."

For example, the lion head coloring booth is based on intangible cultural heritage, allowing children to understand the cultural meaning and color connotation of Liu Guan Zhang lion dance during the coloring process, and feel the charm of the lion dance, an intangible cultural heritage project; booths such as Hema Tiaojian and 123 emotional traffic lights combine classic games with Cantonese expressions The combination allows children to come into contact with authentic Cantonese emotional words while having fun; booths such as the gradually disappearing Cantonese words, One word, many meanings, Guess the riddle from the picture and other booths guide children to understand rare Cantonese words, understand the flexibility and fun of Cantonese, and retain the linguistic roots of Lingnan culture.

The Cantonese market also creates a real language usage scenario, allowing "biliteracy and trilingualism" to be integrated into children's daily communication.

At the event, the young hosts hosted the event in both Cantonese and English; each grade took turns to take the stage and sang a chorus of classic Cantonese songs. What was even more interesting was that at the "Cantonese Voices" booth, foreign teachers also recorded Cantonese songs in advance. The children listened and competed, exposed themselves to Cantonese in a relaxed and cheerful atmosphere, and truly felt the unique fun of the collision of different languages.

Only when language is truly "used" can the multilingual atmosphere on campus be more lively and vivid, making language learning perceptible, usable, and more interesting.

During the booth activities, we can see many children taking the initiative to communicate with teachers, classmates, and parents to understand the connotation behind Cantonese; some children confidently spoke to the camera and shouted "I love Foshan ASJ" in Cantonese, which is childish and sincere.

"Each semester's Cantonese classes in the primary school are designed based on unique Cantonese themes, and the market is the accumulation of these classes." Teacher Irene, who is in charge of Cantonese teaching, has witnessed the growth of the children.

In preparation for this Cantonese market, the children personally designed exclusive cultural creations for the stalls - T-shirts with lion dance patterns, refrigerator magnets full of Cantonese charm, practical and unique bookmarks and key chains, etc. The works not only incorporate authentic Lingnan style, but also cleverly combine Hong Kong and Macao cultural elements.

For children with a foundation in Cantonese, the market is more like a "rediscovery". They began to realize that those familiar words and expressions were endowed with richer connotations, which also gave them a deeper identity and confidence in their own culture.

Students from non-Cantonese speaking backgrounds can also learn about the traditional culture, folk customs and language charm of the Lingnan region in this entertaining and entertaining way, thereby deepening their understanding of the diversity and uniqueness of Lingnan culture and cultivating respect and appreciation for the diverse Chinese culture.

A Cantonese market brings authentic Cantonese style to the campus, allowing classic Lingnan culture to immerse children in their hearts. I hope every child can listen to traditions, embrace classics, and grow into a little inheritor of Lingnan culture.
