During Spring Break 2026, a group of Shekou International School students traveled to Barcelona, Spain, for an immersive Spanish language and cultural experience.

This trip to Spain is an integral part of language learning at SIS. Because international mindedness is an essential principle of the IB Programme, our language learning is deeply connected to the curriculum.

Over nine days, SIS students lived with local host families, explored the city’s history and architecture, and engaged in authentic, real-world language use across Barcelona and the surrounding region.
在为期九天的行程中，SIS学生入住当地寄宿家庭，探索城市的历史与建筑，并在巴塞罗那及周边地区进行真实情境中的语言交流与实践。
The purpose of the trip was to extend learning beyond the classroom by developing Spanish in meaningful contexts while deepening students’ understanding of culture, identity, and global perspectives. Living in homestays and navigating daily life in Spanish challenged students to communicate, adapt, and grow in ways that cannot be replicated in a traditional setting.

Beyond scheduled activities, some of the most meaningful learning occurred in everyday moments—sharing meals with host families, navigating public transportation, and communicating in Spanish. These experiences fostered our Geckos’ independence, resilience, and intercultural understanding.

The Spanish immersion trip brought language learning to life, leaving students with stronger Spanish skills, greater cultural awareness, and meaningful personal growth that will stay with them well beyond the classroom.
