How can ordinary circles and squares become magical wonders in a child's eyes? What delightful surprises lie hidden within everyday building blocks and three-dimensional objects?
At the K2C Starfish Class of the BeeMee Forest Academy Xihu Campus, a joyful exploration centred on the transition from 2D to 3D shapes is now underway. We integrate reading, art, crafts, construction, language development and home-school collaboration to create an immersive playground for shape exploration. Far from dry knowledge-drilling, we let children learn through play and discover through doing, effortlessly unlocking the mysteries of shapes. Every activity is closely aligned with the seven key areas of the EYFS (Early Years Foundation Stage), allowing growth to happen naturally amidst playful exploration.

01
Reading Picture Books: An Introduction to the World of Shapes
The adventure began by turning the pages of delightful English picture books. Classics such as 'Mouse Shapes', 'Square', 'When I Build with Blocks' and 'Circle, Square, Moose' take center stage. Our foreign teacher Eric, with infectious enthusiasm, guided the children into the wondrous realm of shapes. Rather than rigid lectures, the vivid illustrations and engaging stories in the books gradually introduce 2D shapes - such as circles, squares and triangles - into the children's world.

Pointing to square building blocks, round cakes and triangular roofs in the books, the teacher guided the children to observe the characteristics of each shape and repeat the English words aloud. With wide, curious eyes, the children joined the teacher in pointing out and repeating the words, occasionally shouting "Circle!" and "Square!" with excitement. In this relaxed picture book reading atmosphere, the children not only learned about basic 2D shapes but also developed a keen curiosity to explore them further, laying the foundation for their future exploration of 3D shapes.

EYFS Areas Supported:
Communication and Language: Through listening to the picture book, repeating the words and identifying shapes, children's English listening comprehension and oral expression skills are enhanced. They gain the confidence to actively speak out the names of shapes, thereby developing social communication and linguistic self-assurance.
Literacy: By matching the illustrations in the picture book with the corresponding shape words, children establish connections between visual images and linguistic symbols, accumulating early intuitive literacy experiences whilst fostering a love of reading and the ability to understand text and images.

02
Art Creation: The Magic of the Transformative Circle
Moving beyond simple drawing, the children in the Starfish Class embarked on a creative journey with “Circle Art – The Art of the Transformative Circle”. With a sheet of white paper and a few coloured pencils, simple circles instantly take on a myriad of forms in the children's hands.
Some children add a lid and a spout to their circles, transforming them into adorable little teapots; others stack multiple circles to draw colourful balloons; and still others combine circles with lines to create round suns, round watermelons and more. With no set templates, every child gave free rein to their imagination, interpreting the infinite possibilities of the circle in their own unique way. The teacher patiently guided them from the sidelines, encouraging the children to use colour boldly and create freely, ensuring that every piece was brimming with childlike innocence and creativity, whilst deepening their understanding of two-dimensional circles through artistic creation.

EYFS Areas Supported:
Expressive Art and Design: Children freely express artistic creativity, using drawing and colour combinations to convey their understanding of circles, enhancing artistic appreciation and hands-on creative skills, whilst stimulating imagination and the desire for artistic expression.
Physical Development: The process of holding a pencil, colouring and drawing exercises the flexibility of the small hand muscles and hand-eye coordination, cultivating fine motor control necessary for future writing.

03
Craft Puzzles: Creative Shape Collages
Having learned about basic 2D shapes, the children moved on to a fun-filled craft puzzle activity. The teacher prepared coloured card in advance and guided the children to cut out different shapes such as circles, squares, triangles and rectangles. They then used these individual shape pieces to create their own unique collages.

The classroom instantly came alive as scissors darted nimbly through little hands and the shape pieces were rearranged, giving birth to one imaginative creation after another! When asked by the teacher,"What did you make?", the children shared their work with excitement:
James shouted, "Monster!", using triangles for horns and squares for the body;
Woody proudly displayed "A rocket!", combining circles and rectangles to create a rocket soaring towards the sky;
Hanyuan happily introduced "A house.", using squares for the walls and triangles for the roof, bringing a cosy little house to life.
Through the process of cutting, assembling and describing, the children fully explored 2D shapes, simultaneously enhancing their practical skills and expressive abilities.

EYFS Areas Supported:
Expressive Art and Design: By independently cutting out and collaging shapes, children exercise their creativity in combining forms, cultivating artistic creativity and aesthetic perception, and learning to express their ideas through craft.
Mathematics: Children perceive the characteristics, sizes and patterns of different 2D shapes, laying the foundations for spatial awareness and logical thinking about shapes.
Physical Development: Using scissors and sticking cards precisely exercise fine motor skills and hand-eye coordination.

04
Construction Challenge: Building a Tower with 3D Shapes
Moving from 2D to 3D, the children's exploration takes a new step forward! The teacher introduces various 3D building blocks—including cubes, rectangular prisms, spheres and cylinders—allowing the children to observe the differences between three-dimensional and two-dimensional shapes first-hand, and to touch and feel the edges and curved surfaces of the 3D shapes.

The children then split into groups to take on the challenge of building 3D shape towers. Working together, they use different 3D blocks to construct their own group's tower. Some groups used rectangular prisms as a base to ensure stability; others stacked cylinders and cubes to build the tower layer by layer; whilst some incorporated arched blocks as decorative elements to give their tower a unique touch. The children worked together, experimenting and carefully adjusting the position of the blocks, competing to see whose tower was the tallest and most stable. Throughout the building process, the children gained a tangible understanding of the spatial structures of 3D shapes, whilst experiencing the joy of cooperation and exploration.

EYFS Areas Supported:
Mathematics: Recognizing the characteristics of various 3D shapes, perceiving spatial structures and the relationships between balance and height, and developing spatial imagination, number sense and logical thinking skills.
Physical Development: Carrying and stacking blocks help develop gross motor skills and physical coordination, whilst group building enhances body control and collaborative abilities.
Understanding the World: Children learn about the practical applications of 3D shapes, practise teamwork and division of labor, learn to solve problems through trial and error, and experience the joy of construction play.

05
Expressing Ourselves: My Favourite Shapes
During the language expression session, the children became little communicators, bravely sharing their favourite shapes. The teacher guided them to use English phrases such as "I like…" and "My favourite shapes…". The children eagerly raised their hands and, in their childlike voices, named their favourite shapes - such as circles, squares, triangles, or three-dimensional shapes like cubes and cylinders— - and even briefly explained why they liked them.

One child said, "I like circles; they're like balls." Another said, "My favourite shape is a square; it's a block." Still others introduced their favourite shapes by referring to their own jigsaw puzzles or building creations. In this relaxed atmosphere, the children not only mastered the English words for various shapes but also learnt to express their preferences coherently, gaining increasing confidence in their language skills.

EYFS Areas Supported:
Communication and Language: Using set phrases to express ideas, expanding English vocabulary, and enhancing language organization, logical expression and proactive communication skills, whilst encouraging children to express themselves confidently in front of a group.
Literacy: Oral expression exercises, consolidate shape-related vocabulary, deepen the connection between words and real objects, and build a foundation for early literacy.

06
Home-School Collaboration: Discovering Shapes in Everyday Life
To extend the exploration of shapes into daily life, the Starfish Class launched a special home-school collaboration activity, inviting children to bring in a 2D or 3D shape they had found at home. The children returned home full of anticipation, joining their parents in searching for shapes in everyday life: some brought round plates and small wheels, square biscuit tins; others brought cubic building blocks, cylindrical packaging boxes; and still others brought heart-shaped little stands, spherical table tennis balls.
In class, the children eagerly displayed the shape-related items they had brought and shared their discoveries with their classmates. Through this home-school collaboration, the children realized that shapes are everywhere and that mathematical mysteries are hidden in all aspects of daily life. This not only reinforced the geometric knowledge they had learned in class but also extended their learning from the classroom into the home, involving parents in their children's exploratory growth and fostering a positive atmosphere of shared home-school education.

EYFS Areas Supported:
Understanding the World: Discovering shape elements in daily life helps children recognize the close connection between shapes and everyday existence, enhancing their ability to explore the world around them.
Communication and Language: Sharing objects found at home with peers, practices verbal expression and communication skills, and strengthening parent-child interaction and friendships with peers.

This journey from 2D to 3D shapes has not only introduced the children of the Starfish Class to various geometric forms but has also facilitated all-round development through reading, creativity, construction and self-expression. From two-dimensional to three-dimensional, and from understanding to application, the children effortlessly acquired knowledge, honed their skills and sparked their imagination through these engaging activities, perfectly aligning with the developmental goals of the EYFS. The best education is one that allows children to explore whilst having fun, and to grow through that exploration. May the little ones in the Starfish Class, armed with their curiosity about the world, continue to unlock more secrets of growth!
