Through every struggle, every fresh start, and every piece of hard-won work, these students have grown. The PYP Exhibition was their declaration: "This is Us."
Every journey has a destination. For students in the Primary Years Programme (PYP), that destination is the Exhibition, a culminating project in Grade 5 that celebrates their entire learning journey through primary school. It is an opportunity for students to showcase their development as inquirers, thinkers, and communicators, demonstrating the Approaches to Learning (ATL) skills they have honed over the years.
The Exhibition is not just a project; it is a rite of passage, a student-driven inquiry that they design, research, and share with the ISD Community, the wider Dongguan Community, and the global IB network with visits from other schools in the Greater Bay Area.
This year, our students’ journey was guided by the transdisciplinary theme of How We Express Ourselves, with their inquiry taking flight under the powerful and personal banner of "This is Me."
For eight intensive weeks, our Grade 5 students worked in small groups to explore issues that mattered deeply to them. They connected their personal interests and passions to real-world challenges and the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals, delving into topics as diverse as Gender Equality in Sports, the link between Visual Arts and Mental Health, Food Waste, and Screen Addiction.
At the heart of this process lies student agency. Throughout the project, our students were given authentic voice, choice, and ownership. They took the lead, independently contacting expert mentors, scheduling meetings, and designing surveys to gather community perspectives. They became true researchers, collecting firsthand information through interviews and deep online investigation. Their process journals became a testament to this journey, a record of their bumps and bruises, their difficult tasks, the hours of research, and the moments of breakthrough.
This rigorous inquiry is fueled by the Approaches to Learning (ATLs), the transferable skills that will serve them through the MYP, DP/ CP, and beyond.
✔ Students honed their Research Skills while digging into complex global issues.
✔ They developed Social and Communication Skills through collaboration and interviews.
✔ They strengthened their Self-Management Skills by navigating deadlines and complex tasks,
✔ And they sharpened their Thinking Skills by analyzing information and generating creative solutions.
This deep inquiry and skill development manifested in powerful, student-initiated action. We saw students turning their understanding into tangible change:
George, stemming from his inquiry into how friendship affects well-being, wrote and published a book to share the power of supportive relationships in strengthening mental health.
Bei and Farrah, after questioning gender inequality in sports, wrote a formal proposal to the school advocating for a mixed-gender primary soccer team, arguing that talent and passion should never be defined by gender.
Chloe, Hannah, and Cléo launched a school-wide Food Waste Challenge, turning their research on global hunger into a real-world campaign that made "finishing the food on your plate" a shared responsibility.
Jason, concerned by his research on screen addiction, created and performed a puppet show for our kindergarteners, offering a tangible and heartwarming alternative to the digital world.
...
The culmination of these eight weeks was the Exhibition event itself, where our students shared their learning through a vibrant tapestry of expression. Visitors didn’t just watch; they participated. They experienced music and art, took part in first-aid lessons, read student-authored books, and engaged with interactive games and quizzes. These were not just showy displays; they were authentic products of deep learning and understanding.
