On the morning of May 9, guided by instructors, the kayaking training officially began. Students first learned basic paddling techniques, safety knowledge and teamwork skills on the water. From proper force application to maintaining boat balance, from team pacing to turning and docking skills, every movement called for tacit cooperation among team members.
As the training progressed, the real challenge set in. Constant paddling soon left their arms and shoulders aching. What had seemed like an easy water activity gradually turned into a test of endurance and physical strength.
“It feels like we’ve been paddling forever, yet the destination never seems to get any closer,” one student remarked with a smile. It was their first true understanding of just how long a water journey can be.
In the afternoon, students embarked on a mini kayaking excursion, paddling toward the bald cypress forest on the water. Amid the natural scenery where the lake surface blends with the woodland, they further practiced the paddling skills and teamwork techniques learned in the morning, while also enjoying fun water games along the way.
This was more than just physical training; it was also an enlightening growth lesson about responsibility and collaboration.
During the sharing session of the day, many students remarked:"Tired as we were, we truly learned how to kayak, and gained a deeper understanding of the importance of teamwork than we had imagined."
The supervising instructors also commented:"This kayaking journey is not merely about training students’ outdoor skills, but also cultivating their perseverance and ability to cooperate when facing challenges. On the water, no one can rely entirely on themselves. Students have to communicate constantly, make adjustments and support one another. These are precisely the invaluable growth experiences that cannot be learned inside the classroom."
For many students, this was also their first genuine exposure to outdoor exploration.
Stepping away from the familiar classroom and daily routine, they had to adapt to many new things — the weather, physical stamina, routes, pace, and the way they cooperate with one another. These experiences are precisely what make outdoor education so authentic and meaningful.
One student shared, “This practice journey made me realize that outdoor exploration is not just a test of physical fitness, but also a lesson in facing difficulties as a team. Though the process was tiring and stressful, it has made me even more looking forward to the upcoming assessment expedition. I hope to push past my limits in the official challenge and discover how far I can truly persevere.”
The instructor also advised students to step up their physical training over the next week, so they can be in better shape to take on the official assessment challenge.
This kayaking practice session enabled students to grasp the fundamental skills of water-based activities. Immersed in a real outdoor setting, they also experienced the true meaning of teamwork, role accountability and perseverance. For many participants, it was their first attempt at outdoor adventure, as well as an unforgettable journey of personal growth and self-breakthrough.
