To enhance the learning experience of our Grade 11 Geography students, the Geography Department organised a field study on 12 May 2026. The visit covered the Jockey Club Museum of Climate Change at The Chinese University of Hong Kong and the Ma Shi Chau Nature Trail.

This field trip closely aligns with two core themes of the Hong Kong Diploma of Secondary Education (DSE) Geography curriculum: Climate Change and Dynamic Earth.

The tour began at Sam Mun Tsai in Tai Po, where students experienced the unique charm of a traditional fishing village. Afterwards, the group walked to Ma Shi Chau, a key location where Permian sedimentary rocks are predominantly exposed in the southeastern part of the island. Along the Ma Shi Chau Nature Trail, students investigated real-world geological features, including folds and faults, sedimentary rock formations, unconformities, coastal landforms, and evidence of past sea-level changes. This hands-on experience has consolidated their learning of the DSE elective topic Dynamic Earth.

Through the activity, students strengthen their ability to identify different rock types such as sandstone, siltstone and quartzite, and observe how faulting and folding shape rock structures. By examining the interactions between natural processes (plate tectonics and climate) and human activities, students have developed environmental awareness and critical thinking skills.

In the afternoon, students visited the Jockey Club Museum of Climate Change at The Chinese University of Hong Kong, the world’s first museum dedicated to climate change. Students showed great interest in the interactive exhibits, including the Xue Long icebreaker cabin simulation, the Arctic Expedition documentary, as well as satellite remote sensing and environmental monitoring galleries.

Students applied classroom theories related to climate change — such as the greenhouse effect, global warming, and mitigation and adaptation strategies — while completing their worksheets thoughtfully. They also gained insight into how university researchers use innovative studies to address challenges brought by climate change.
