May 24 marked our third participation in the Inter-School Team Chess Challenge (ISTCC), one of the major team chess events among international schools in Beijing.
Hosted at the International School of Beijing (ISB), the tournament featured seven rounds with a 15+10 time control (15 minutes plus a 10-second increment per move). Unlike many youth chess events that focus primarily on individual performance, ISTCC emphasizes teamwork and school representation.
Each team consists of four starting players and up to two substitutes, allowing schools to compete in the U8, U12, and U18 divisions. Team chess creates a unique environment where success is determined not only by individual skill, but also by cooperation, focus, strategy, and the ability to support one another throughout a long day of competition.
This year’s event brought together 22 teams across the three age divisions, creating a highly competitive and exciting environment for all participants.
