The annual Prep Talks competition concluded successfully this May at LEH Foshan. As a highlight tradition in our Prep School, Prep Talks serves as a vital platform for students to express themselves, build confidence and develop independent thinking. Centred around our school’s 8C core values, the event encourages students to share genuine opinions based on daily observation. It gives every child a valuable chance to practise public speaking and grow in courage.
Following the same structure as previous years, the competition consists of three rounds. Every student in each year group takes part in the first round, ensuring everyone can step onto the stage and refine their oracy skills. The first round is held in class and judged by form teachers, focusing on research quality and basic presentation skills. Outstanding speakers advance to the second round, judged by invited teachers across the school. Judges evaluate not only stage presence but also speech content and topic relevance. Eventually, three to four students from each year group enter the final, performing on the theatre stage in front of teachers, peers and a professional judging panel.
Public speaking is a vital life skill, and the earlier it is developed, the more confidently it can flourish. At LEH Foshan, we have a responsibility to nurture the leaders of tomorrow, and providing young people with a safe and supportive environment to express themselves is an essential part of that journey. Watching their peers perform not only builds confidence but also inspires others to step forward and have a go.
Clear Criteria for Judgement
All speeches are assessed according to six consistent standards:
Confidence
Topic Relevancy
Structure, clarity and audience engagement
Appropriate use of humour
Posture, appearance and stage presence
Depth of research and independent thinking
The criteria value not only delivery skills but also original thoughts, authentic voices and personalised ideas from every student.
Noticeable Growth from First to Final Round
The transformation students experience throughout Prep Talks is remarkable. At the first rehearsal, many students feel nervous: speaking softly, avoiding eye contact, fidgeting, rushing their words and standing in a closed posture. By the final round, their progress is clearly visible. They stand tall and open, project their voice steadily with varied tone and pace, engage confidently with the audience, and use natural, intentional gestures. Most importantly, they speak with true confidence and personality.
The benefits extend far beyond the stage. Many students who were once quiet and hesitant in class become more willing to answer questions, share ideas and take initiative in group discussions after taking part in Prep Talks. The confidence and communication skills gained on stage positively influence everyday classroom learning.
For Ms Robbins and Mr Mannion, who were participating in the preparation of this event for the first time, they also truly felt the boundless potential of the students. Students in lower Prep step out of their comfort zone to speak in public, while students upper Prep showcase their personality through raps, props and creative presentation styles. These priceless skills in communication, critical thinking and resilience will benefit them for life.
Every speech is a step forward, and every stage appearance marks meaningful growth. Congratulations to all students who took part in Prep Talks and to those who won the final prize. May our students carry this confidence, courage and thinking ability into future studies and life, always speaking up and shining in their own unique way. If you would like to witness more wonderful moments and experience our vibrant learning atmosphere in person, welcome to join our Prep School Open Day on 13 June.
